Not watching, but I did see that 4/5 living presidents declared our long national nightmare over. I thought that was pretty cool/funny.
"Good riddance to David Letterman" hahaha. Great little bit.
Look at #9, Brady admitting to wearing a headset.
...and underpants!
Loved the Michigan directional schools. Man I'd love to see a Mexican Michigan game.
Thanks for posting. I missed that show.
Or as live as it could be, considering they tape [make that "taped"] in late afternoon. I remember thinking Hoke was adorable. Felt so bad for Letterman when he abandoned Dave's alma mater for-- was it San Diego State then?
And I too loved the directionals. Speaking of which, was the shot-in-the-foot reference to Plaxico Burress? Did Ball State play MSU and perhaps lose to them that year?
I thought for sure you would mention SCTV.
Well you missed out on some of the greats. I love Comedy Central, but the history of Letterman is better than anything on CC.
Letterman's final show. EVER. I've been a fan of this ex-weatherman-turned-comic-genius for decades, and although I've kind of drifted away a bit over the last several years, this finale is must-see TV.
Thanks for years and years of laughs, Dave. You'll truly be missed, despite what all those presidents said.
It's fun for me seeing these old clips, as I pretty much only started watching in the last 10 or so years. He just has this great set of qualities as a host that I don't think will be matched again...maybe Colbert can get closer to that than the Jimmies.
And here we go with the last Top Ten.
by Dave to Art Linkletter, a show my mom watched for decades when I was a little one.
but then it was an entirely era- there was really no alternative (ABC tried for years, with their Wide World of Entertainment in the 70's and such). Dave is the last link to those times...and he deserved to follow Carson, not Leno.

gotta turn off adblocker though
Funny how we didn't see this many people come out of the woodwork when Leno "retired"...
Because people actually like Letterman.
You're entitled to your opinion, but MUCH MORE LIKABLE??? REALLY???

I can't hear you!
Nicer or smarmy? If that were true, then his guests would have mourned his retirement similarly. They didn't.
Always was a Carson fan growing up over Letterman. When I got to AA he was way more popular esp with the large East Coast (esp NY) student body. Carson was more of a Midwestern type sensibility and I liked his dry sense of humor.
I did think Letterman did the better interviews because he sometimes asked off the wall or tough(ish) questions whereas the other shows were all softball questions. Also liked Leno but I sound really old.
I feel old with the new breed of late nite guys - the only one I really get laughs out of is Kimmel. I dont think Fallon is a very funny comic but he is great at doing bits with celebrities and having stuff that goes viral - but I am more of a fan of the monologues (i.e actual jokes) and his just dont do anything for me; Carson was great at it as was Leno. Letterman hit or miss on monologues.
I do think Fallon is perfect for his generation - everything in society now is celebrity oriented so what would be boring with normal people from the crowd becomes exciting with a celebrity doing it, and everything is in snippet format so it fits in a 4 minute youtube video. Watching celebrity after celebrity do beer pong or lip sync is boring to me. But I am reaching get off my lawn age.
I did love Colbert's show (and Stewart) so I will be curious how he turns out just being him as opposed to his alter ego. Will be tuning in.
p.s. enjoyed Letterman's segment with the kids tonight.
Carson fan too, but Letterman knda grew on me.
That Taco Bell bit was fucking hilarious. He should have never fixed his gap. I think that was his trademark.
...and the next guy, "She's gone Chief".
There was another time when he went to a Taco Bell drive through with a convertble and ordered 1000 tacos. The rest of the bit was him driving around and passing them out to people.
has anyone here been to the Ed Sullivan Theater for Late Night? I made it there back in 2004 on my only trip ever to NYC, my only disappointment was that Letterman was on vacation himself at the time.
Always wanted to see the Ed Sullivan Theater. A TV landmark building for sure.
Saw the show at the Ed Sullivan theatre...remember being pissed because the guest that night was Tom Brokaw, but the next night was Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. Did attend the show when he was at NBC and on at 12:30am, and Larry "Bud" Melman was handing out hot towels to people arriving at the Port Authority in NYC. The Melman bit was on a remote, so everyone in the studio saw it on monitors, but the whole bit was piss-you-pants funny at the moment. I remember Letterman laughing so hard he was crying. It is on YouTube somewhere.
Favorite Letterman joke: It rained so hard last night that half the puddles in the city are actually filled with water.
Guests were Claires Danes, rapper Big Boi, and Stupid Pet Tricks.
I miss the Dave of 15+ years ago. Seems like he had already retired. But I'm excited for Colbert.
just last year. Found the show folk called back on my answering machine when I was out of town, on the same day that the free hotel copy of USA-Today had the headline that he'd just announced his retirement the night before. (Some friends were hoping to go in the last few weeks, knowing he'd be gone, but said it was booked solid.)
He does [did] a warm-up with the crowd (most shows have a stand-in comedian), in his shirtsleeves as you saw on the clip of a day-in-his-life, and having been there I now know why they have the close-up on someone in the audience after a sly comment in the monologue. It's a follow-up to the pre-show audience Q&A, so the writers get something out of it almost immediately to stick into the monologue. Once the show starts, the cameras tend to block him (there are monitors to watch when that happens), but one of the advantages of being live is you actually hear the band play during the commercials.
My one disappointment was the guest that night-- one of the very few comedians I'm not fond of. Knowing he's popular with a lot of people, he'll remain nameless. He's the kind of over-the-top guy who's a distinct contrast with Letterman's sly, sardonic, and increasingly human thing I was getting so fond of.
At least now I might get to bed on time.
WHAT A FANTASTIC, AWESOME ENDING SEQUENCE WITH The Foo Fighters!!! So many pictures and clips of celebrities shown rapid-fire at the end, I'm going to have to slow it down and see how many I can identify. Dave had the best-of-the-best on Late Night for so many memorable years.
Again, Dave, thanks for many, mnay years of laughter. You WILL be missed!
Great finale. The Top Ten and the Foo Fighters were the highlights for me but the whole thing was a great sendoff. Enjoy retirement Dave, drop by once in a while.
Great show, I loved it.
You could tell Dave was getting really emotional and had to fight off tears.
Best of luck to him and his family.
Hope to see him stop by some of these other shows in the near future.
I remember him choking up when Warren Zevon was his only guest for the entire show after announcing he had terminal brain cancer. Letterman wasn't the easiest guy to get close to but he was loyal to a fault to his friends.
Fun show. And man, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss gets hotter every year. She has to be an alien or something.
Ain't it the truth!
I was able to see Letterman live in 2000 with guest Natalie Portman and Lennox Lewis. It is still one of the coolest things I have every been a part of.
I am 33 and some of the clips I have seen the past month I remember seeing when they first aired. Time is moving fast. He is my Carson.
Thanks Dave.
Loved the show and loved the finale tonight. It looked like he was taking in the moment, too. I'll give Colbert a chance but I think Kimmel will be my guy.
People rave about Colbert, but I've seen maybe 5 minutes of his shows. He killed it on cable though - according to ratings.
