Happy opening day to all my fellow hunters out there. Be safe and aim small miss small.

what the hell are you guys even talking about? I didn't bring up morals. I didn't say hunting is morally wrong. Seriously, do you know how to read? XM brought up morals. I said hunters protraying themselves as the great saviors of humanity is fucking annoying. See the comment/attitude I replied to: "But people would hate to see what would happen if it were outlawed, or hunters just took a few years off"

Before he passed away, my dad told a story about his father. He wasn’t a hunter, but he was handy with a knife. He used to clean and skin deer for his neighbors. This was back in the early 1950’s. Grandpa would charge $1 for this service and he would give a nickel of that to my dad for helping out. Grandpa would claim that he could clean and skin a deer in 5 minutes. I’m not sure I’m remembering that correctly, so I googled “clean and skin a deer.” There’s some videos showing how it can be done in 10 minutes, so I think I’m right. Grandpa was country strong. Anyway, he used to bet new customers that he could get it done in that time and he never lost a bet.

Best of luck and a safe hunt to all the hunters out there the next two weeks (you archery guys, too). I think most here understand the necessity of "harvesting" some of the otherwise unchecked herd of deer across our state.

Although I haven't hunted in many many years, I did enjoy spending the last couple days with my brother and a few friends and cousins at their hunting camp near Baldwin.  I headed back home late in the afternoon yesterday while the hunters in the group did their final prep work before heading to their hunting blinds today by 6am.

This a family tradition. We had about 40 people, guys and gals, out at deer camp last night. Spanning 4 generations.  Had a pig roast by the campfire and played craps and euchre.  Good times.

Thanks for the reminder.  I am not a hunter but it's a helpful reminder for those of us that spend time outdoors.  For me, it means not running anywhere near where there might be active hunting going on.

Good luck out there guys. I am not a hunter myself but have no issue at all with it, just never had anyone to teach me and never had enough interest to seek it out.

Not a hunter (I'm a certified woos) but I have great respect for people who do. It's hard to find a group of more committed conservationists and I appreciate them keeping my plants safe and lyme disease away from me (I live a quarter mile from a Chicagoland forest preserve that's closed off periodically for bow hunters, God bless 'em). Enjoy your delicious venison!

Ah yes. Yesterday was the last day for deep woods and mountain trail hikes for all family members. Hikes are now limited to golf courses and shopping malls 😉

As a youngster, I always went out with my dad and sat with him in his blind on opening day.  Lots of great memories.

Sadly, my dad passed away when I was 11 and I never had anyone to bring me out to hunt after that.  I took all the hunter safety classes and what not when I was 12, but that is kind of where it ended for me.

I would love to get back into hunting some day, but it has been so long that I would need someone to teach me how to gut a deer if I ever shot one.
