OT - The ESPYs.... Le Sigh
So, on this, one of three days a year in which there are no major four sports games going, we have the ESPYs.
I LOATHE the idea of letting people vote on awards. People are stupid. Voting is almost always done for a favorite and not a true winner.
First complaint: (EDIT) Chris Berman confusing me about what year plays took place (see below).
In the words of THE KNOWLEDGE: Comments commence.
The ESPYs has been good for four things:
1) Jimmy V speech. Bar none.
2) The skit where Greg Oden played the piano.
3) The "demands" set forth by Will Farrell and John C. Reilly.
4) Michele Beadle's orange dress.
That is all.
Yes, that was a great moment...
"I call the black guy"
My favorite line went unnoticed by the audience:
"I want the Cold War to start again so the Olympics can be interesting"
"Dig him up" was repeated numerous times around the office after this was aired. This is these two guys at their peak, to be honest. It's all excellent.
4) Pics or it didn't happen
-1,000,000 for missing Norm MacDonalds line to Charles Woodson in 1998. It was epic.

Jim Leyland appearance there too.
article because its so true...
(Honestly, Ken Griffey, Jr. has this "Is anyone going to yank this motherfucker off the stage?-look" both times they pan over to him. )
Jump to the 8 minute mark to see the Woodson joke, but the whole thing is absolutely worth watching. Man, sometimes I forget how awesome Norm MacDonald used to be back in the '90s.
I'm so glad there are people like Norm. The guy is amazing lol
When unleashed he was, and remains (as when he occasionally drops by the Howard Stern show) one of the funniest guys ever. When he is in the company of Arte Lange, pure gold every time.
1) it was women's soccer
2) it wasn't that great
and most importnatly
3) It won LAST year?
My bad - just saw Chris Berman do a run down of top plays and I thought they were all from this year. Fixed.
However, to your first point (and second), maybe let's be less biased (against soccer) and sexist (against women) - it won last year so those two facts clearly don't and shouldn't affect it's worthiness of an award.
relentless cheerleading of women's soccer in the media, which is beyond parody. I'll always remember the US women's team winning the sportsmen of the year award in 1999 when they won the World Cup--even though they were the FAVORITE going into the competition--but the victory was treated in the same manner as the Olympic hockey team's victory in 1980.
Regarding the goal: I have one major problem with it winning. One thing my son-in-law has bestowed upon me while watching a few games (my grandson is a goalie) is that if he comes out to get the ball, he absolutely must get the ball. I think it was as much a bad play by the goalie as it was a great play by the ladies. I'd feel the same way if a football team won on a hail mary where the defender tripped and fell down 10 yards before the catch. Just my two cents.

Yeah, but then you can say that if the goalie stayed back, was she going to make the save? It was a strong header that was well placed enough for me to say no.
But that play by the goalie wasn't anything close to someone tripping. If anything, when you watch the replay, you can argue the goalie made the right decision and just came up short. Literally, about an inch short.
Regardless, FAIL on me for thinking this play is even involved in this year's ESPYs. Like everything in life, I blame it on Chris Berman.
it won last year.
Things of note:
Verlander up for Male Athlete - competing against LBJ, Aaron Rodgers
Best Game, which has to be the coolest award, for some reason only has 3 finalists, none of which are UTL
Matthew Stafford up for Best Comeback - for some reason Sydney Crosby is also there.
Nothing else is really that interesting, to me anyway.
Crosby didn't even come back and do that much! Go Stafford!
This Rob Riggle monologue is rough.
Yeah no kidding, he was/is a flop. No good material and even worse delivery.
EDSBS just tweeted this clip of Norm MacDonald's monologue (hilarious), and he worked Woodson's Heisman win into his closing joke.
even funnier. How absolutely absurd was the collective offense taken by many pro athletes, tacitly defending OJ?
the espys belong in the 90s with kato kalin, zubaz, and ungroomed female eyebrows
This skit was pretty funny too...

Won't let me embed ... damn you ESPN
Riggle's opening was pretty rough. Brittney Griner wins. She dressed and sounds manly. I've never heard her talk.
Yeah, strange dress choice, but to each their own. I think that was a no-brainer winner.
As awkward as Riggle's opening was, his first skit was atrocious.
True that. He's defintely no Norm McDonald
Biased, but UTL > All of the those games. 49ers Saints wins best game.
I was at UTL and Game 6 and the Notre Dame game definitely deserved to be nominated but the Cardinals/Rangers is the biggest snub of the night.
Like always, the Arthur Ashe Award is the only worthwhile part of the show.
Pat Summitt is really amazing - I had no idea she had six miscarriages. What an unbelievable person.
god I hate Brian Wilson with a passion. I'd donate money to send him to the moon.
Any chance that we can nominate Brock Mealer for next years Jimmy V award...I know its a little late but I feel like he would make a great recipient.
Not Le Sigh. LeGrand. Him and Kevin Everett's story a few years back brought tears to my eyes.
I still can't believe James Earl Jones won best female athlete.
