OT: ESPN Fail--Stauskas 'Embarrassed'

Submitted by blueinbelfast on

So, ESPN has this on their front page with the headline 'George Embarrasses Stauskas', with the suggestion (helped by the announcer) that George breaks Stauskas's ankles with a fake.  But if you watch the video, Staiskas clearly falls because George steps on his foot.  Do they even watch the videos they post?

Yup. ESPN produces the best live games and highlights. I do think, however, that they have too many extra shows. The 30 for 30 episodes are well done (assuming it's a subject I am interested in) and sometimes I will watch Colleg Football Live, but most of the extra stuff is boring. Without ESPN, we would not have 15+ hours of college football coverage (I'm counting the games and GameDay show) on Saturdays this time of year. No other network would be able to do that because, as far as I know, none have multiple channels like ESPN. I love ESPN's coverage of college football (and basketball).

The problem isn't that they have too many shows. The problem is all of their shows seem like the same nonsense where you hire some moronic personality whose only purpose is to yell and make asinine claims (Stephen A., Skip, etc.). They treat their viewership as a bunch of dullards rather than try to make programming that actualy is insightful or teaches you anything about sports.

Some might argue that that is what America wants: TMZ Sports, but I think that their model is hurting them.

Too many shows and too many channels. Nix half of the shows no one really watches (we get it, life as an athlete is hard). Keep 30 for 30, cancel everything else that isn't highlights or commentary and that would be just fine for me. More focus on good, interesting commentary, less focus on crap shows that no one really cares about.

Even absent a better network. They really have dimished themselves, and it seems like they have Cher as their social media consultant.

Let's say you live somewhere satellite isnt available and Comcast is your only provider. Safe to say, you would call them 2nd tier at best despite no better alternative.

was even like an intended "juke-out" by George.  He was ready to pull in back out and just took an open jumper because Sauce got tangled up and fell.  Yeah, that is really bad title to that video and not at all worthy of its own individual highlight.

going for the gotcha-level, National Enquirer stuff that CBS Sports has increasingly indulged in.

That's okay--I should be using my time for better things than that drivel anyway.

That makes two ESPN failures I have seen today. I was watching a show this morning (that aired last night) and Tom Luginbill was was talking about Michigan's defense against Indiana. He stated that the defense surrendered 41 points, which is the most all season. Well first of all, the defense did not allow that punt return for a touchdown, so that is 7 points off the board. Second of all, the game went to overtime, so that stat is skewed just a bit since they allowed a touchdown in the first session. It's just the way he and his other guys were talking, they made it sound like Michigan's defense was absolutely atrocious and allowed 41 points in regulation, which is factually false.

happening nationally, and is one of the reasons I responded with admitted panic when Stanford was ranked ahead of us in the poll.  Michigan making the playoff is being treated as laughable by all media, local and national, while ESPN ran an article specifically titled "Pac 12 still alive for Playoff."  We are being universally panned for one game that we actually WON and I don't think it bodes well for our prospects going forward this year.

Who cares what they say? I certainly do not. Most people are just assuming that OSU is going to win the conference. They might, they just might, but games are played for a reason. I don't mind being an underdog because when we win in those situations, it is even more fun. I am fine with being underrated.

It is on yahoo too.. Is it some kind of AP article?

Yahoo's quote above the video, article was about Sixers having Six on the floor:

"Again, though, it's difficult to throw stones at him. I mean, when the Sixers just let five players try to defend George and the Pacers, stuff like this happens to Nik Stauskas:"

Video subtitle says "George Breaking Ankles"

I'm pretty sure this is what happens when you're on top for too long. Disney should either spin them off or get a whole lot of new talent in that place. It's mostly a bunch of stagnant blowhards and douchenozzle clickbait vids and articles these days. Give me back my Grantland!

And then he proceeds to miss the shot. That's like claiming you meged someone when dribbling in soccer when really you just kicked the ball through their legs but then didn't end up recovering it. FINISH THE PLAY, SON.

ESPN has totally jumped the shark.  Most of their headlines are misleading to garner clicks.  I've seen a few videos with the headline along the lines of "Harbaugh has a meldown" or "Harbaugh loses it" when he's arguing with the refs.  Passionately advocating for his team? Yes. Meldown, or "goes insane" or whatever BS they want to call it to get some clicks? Not so much.  Sadly, that's about par for the course at ESPN where they seem to be appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Same model that many "news" sites employ now - Huffington Post, Buzzfeed, Business Insider (absolute joke).  Deliberately sensational, misleading and often flat out wrong headlines which, if taken literally you gotta click.  Then the story turns out to be absolute nothingness.  If you make money by driving one metric: volume of clicks, that is what you get.  The internet is as much a platform for DUMB, as it is a platform for knowledge (if not moreso).

Really dumb post by ESPN.  As a Pacer fan, I will say that it is great to see GR3 take advantage of his chance and is playing very well for us.  Larry Bird can really identify talent.  I still remember when Jalen was just a meh player in the NBA until he got to Indy.  Bird really liked him, and showed confidence in him, and Jalen took off.  Jalen became intregal to our finals run in 2000.
