OT: Dinner Recommendations in Ann Arbor

Submitted by blichtybcl on

Staying in Ann Arbor for the first time that didn't revolve around a sporting event. Looking for dinner recommendations for less than $30 per person(ish). Any type of food is open.

This is my first ever topic, but who better to help than fellow mgobloggers! Take it easy on me if I did this wrong :(

In Ypsilanti? That was our go to Italian near AA. Palio’s is ok but Gratzi is overpriced for mediocre food. Liked the Chop House but the first time we were there the waiter said to us “I don’t know where you have eaten steak before but get ready for the best ever by far.” Really? It was good. The “best”? No. By a good margin.

I've never had a bad time at Grizzly Peak, and the Bear Paw Porter is straight sex. Has a nice brewery vibe.

Also, I'm shocked no one has said Sava's yet. Fantastic food at a decent price, and the ambiance is very nice.

I feel like no one knows about this place, but Spencer, on Liberty just East of Main, is pretty much my favorite restaurant, also not as overpriced as most places on Main.

Unfortunately some of my favorite places may be out of your price range (Aventura for example), but here are some options:

Grizzly Peak

Jolly Pumpkin

Arbor Brewing

Red Hawk

Frita Batidos

----

If you're looking for really cheap eats, and don't mind them also being places that the undergrads go as well:

Cantina

Sadako

Cottage Inn

We just went to Ann Arbor this weekend for the folk festival. Great time as always. We ate at red hawk tavern because it’s right by the Hill Auditorium. Good food and happy hour specials on the drinks. After the show we got some great beer and appetizers at the Hopcat. I enjoyed both places and would recommend them but I’m not sure if they’re what you’re looking for. I’ve read good things about the Knights Steakhouse which is next door to the Hopcat but I’ve never been.

Hmmm...we used to go to Grizzly Peak but of late had a few bad meals there.  Pacific Rim is OK but I think their menu is a bit dated...just my .02.

Didn't see Mani listed...Mani has good and very interesting food and within your budget.

Spencer is another interesting place with a different menu.

Mikette up on the north end of town is a good bistro.

Ann Arbor has a large number of good restaurants with prices that fall in your range.  If you pick the kind of food you want and the atmosphere, we could maybe hone in on a few more places.

At 30 a pop, I'd say Grizzly Peak, or Pretzel Bell if you want some new old school Ann Arbor. Haymaker is new on the scene, but is also a great gastropub spot with some ecclectic stuff (deep fried avocado for example). If you're willing to push that PP limit, Zingerman's Roadhouse is defimitely the place to go.

I love Grizzly Peak and Jolly Pumpkin if you're looking for traditional American bar fare.  If you want something a bit different, try Frita Batidos.  They're Cuban-inspired and have awesome burgers and fries.

Rick's American Cafe.

Lolol Jk. I like Frita Batidos (younger/undergrad crowd), Shalimar if you're into Indian food, Jolly Pumpkin is pretty good. Hopcat (younger crowd/undergrad heavy). Red Hawk on State is pretty popular.

I've always been of the opinion that Zingermann's was overrated.

If you're in the Briarwood/State St. area, try the Black Rock.  Within your price range and if you order steak they bring the black rock to your table to cook the steak on.  If in a non-meat mood, they have some great salads.

There's a taco bell, McDonalds, Burger king, Wendy's, Subway, and Jimmy Johns all on the south side of town.  Costco has $1.50  hot dogs.

Thank me later.

In the last year or two, I'd recommend Pacific Rim. The Earle isn't bad and we like it on a rainy day. Both decent choices on the more expensive end. The Earle also has a good bar. Gratzi... I was surprised, but it was barely edible. Gandy Dancer has gone downhill and seemingly more chain-like every year. Which is too bad because it was our go-to celebration place decades ago. The Chop House is very expensive, but you can find good deals and it's probably worth it. All these are at the top of your price range without drinks, though. Haven't been to Real Seafood in ages, but it was always good and not quite as expensive from what I remember.
