OT: Cutcliffe NOT UT's new coach
Contrary to the post yesterday, Cutcliffe is staying at Duke.

Ouch, Tennessee.
Is this not karma for all the crap Fulmer did?

and they deserve every bit of it. fulmer was a good coach and should have been able to leave on his own terms.

The Vols are really in a bad spot, and it's primarily because idiot AD Mike Hamilton hired Kiffin in the first place. How anybody could spent 5 minutes with Kiffin and not know he's a coattails-coasting tool is amazing.
As amazing as Kiffin making Phat Phil look honorable.

Golden wouldn't be a bad choice. Temple has REALLY improved since he got there. They've been terrible since before Bill Cosby played there.
January 15th, 2010 at 10:47 AM ^
They reason no one will touch Golden is because of the belief that he will bolt to Penn State in a few years. Forget all this Schiano crap, Penn State wants Golden and Golden really wants Penn State.
He was a LB there back in the day.

So far I believe that they have been turned down by......
Will Muschamp (Texas DC)
Ken Niumatalolo (Navy HC)
David Cutcliffe (Duke HC)
Am I missing anyone?
It wasn't all that long ago that this might have been considered one of the premier positions in the country. Now head coaches at mid majors and coordinators who you might think would be looking to step into a coaching role are walking away from the opportunity. It might be a looong time before Tennessee recovers from this.

and another reason that RR should be given a minimum of 4 years.
Eventually, tradition takes a back seat to crazy, annoying fanbase.

Duke is obviously not a mid major..... In fact, many mid major programs are offended that I inferred that Duke was one.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:52 AM ^
Yes...Air Force's Troy Calhoun.
January 15th, 2010 at 12:12 PM ^
I meant Calhoun and not Niumatalolo. I do not know if Tenn approached Niumatalolo. I knew it was the coach for one of the service schools but I had Navy in my head for some reason. My apologies.

(Could probably add AFA's coach the list of coaches who have disavowed interest in the job.)
I don't know about anybody else, but this is bringing back bad flashbacks to our own HC search.
Schiano...Ferentz...Miles...sailing...
Oy.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:58 AM ^
You know, they ought to inquire about Miles. I understand he's falling out of favor in Louisiana, and certain issues about his management ability keep cropping up, but he's still a MNC coach.

You also have to consider the coaches that turned them down last year that were high on there, but they didn't even approach this time. I'm thinking of guys such as Butch Davis.
For some reason I didn't think Cutcliffe would have turned them down if it was open and offered in say December. B/c it was so close to NSD, I think had an effect (though I really think this may be overblown, afterall it's just 1 recruiting class).
I think U-T would be interested in Mike Leach considering he interviewed their last year, but given the situation surrounding him, now may not be best time to get neg. publicity for your school. I think Leach needs to sit out at least a year before he finds another job.

I can hear those angry banjos echoing in the hills.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:15 AM ^
Get the job. He seems like a pretty reputable coach and doesn't seem like too much of a threat to make Tennessee scary again. They would've been Capital One Bowl bound year in and year out

Coach Cut would love to have the UT job, but is one of the rare guys left in the profession these days that has some integrity. He has been on the wrong side of these situations before, and this time he chose the high road. When he steeped down from his position at ND to focus on his health, he moved back to Knoxville and participated in a local sports radio call-in show. You could tell from listening to the show each week that he loved UT and the community. I think this is a rare example of a coach sticking by his kids and his friend (Fulmer), and not going after money and celebrity. Good interview here:

But I don't think he's ready for this job yet. I saw LaTech a few times and he's done a good job there, but nothing that warrants a UT job. Kiffin really F'd them by leaving this close to signing day.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:31 AM ^
Maybe Kiffin committed more violations at UT than we know about, and it has been "grapevined" at the coaches' meeting. UT has suddenly turned from a top ten job to a cesspool. I hope Kiffin repeats his "success" at USC.

I hope his career includes one more stopover at OSU before he's done forever.

You know, ESPN was all over this last night.

Any chance that UT pulls a K State and re-hires Fulmer? (edit: never mind - Dooley to UT)
I have a friend that goes to Ole Miss and (jokingly) asked about UT poaching 'his' coach. He was most unamused.
