OT: Clemson gets QB Hunter Johnson from portal

Submitted by iawolve on January 17th, 2022 at 4:23 PM

So Clemson goes to the portal to get QB Hunter Johnson (YTHJ) from Northwestern who had previously got Hunter Johnson from Clemson. Either Clemson really wants to copy Georgia by bringing back a QB who can replace the 5* starter or their bag program has really gone to hell in the age of NIL because that guy looked terrible during his time at NW.

Supposedly, Hunter Johnson reached out to Dabo about coming back to Clemson as a GA, so that Hunter can complete his MBA.

Dabo instead offered him a transfer/football scholarship.

It could be that Northwestern/Pat Fitzgerald didn't offer Johnson a scholarship for his 6th/COVID year, and he was planning on hanging up the cleats altogether.

“I initially reached out to Coach Swinney to honestly see if he had any GA spots,” Johnson told 247Sports. “My girlfriend we went to Clemson together and we been looking at going back down South and reached out to him about GA-ing because I wanted to get my MBA. I reached out to him and he asked if I had my sixth year because of COVID and I told him I still did. It wasn’t really my intention initially of calling him. It was pretty exciting and I took a day or so to think over things and it felt like it was a great situation for me and her all around and just being able to go finish my sixth year and play at a place I’ve grown to love over the years and be part of the room. That’s what he told me, he wants to have somebody in the room who’s older who’s had some experience in college football and the fact I already been there and been in the system and know the system helps even more. He thought it would be a really really cool situation.”

Amazingly, contrary to popular opinion on this board, some people do have other priorities than just what school rates higher. He obviously loves Clemson, and he and his girlfriend wished to get back down south. If you've never been to Clemson you wouldn't understand how beautiful that area is and just how family oriented they are with their football program.

In this state and region, a Clemson degree will go a long way and open a lot of doors.

He should have stayed in Evanston. Could have been an assistant anywhere and at anytime, but that free graduate degree from NWU is no longer an option. Odds are against him ever starting for Dabo and if he does, odds are heavily against Dabo recovering his magic.

Edit: Boflex, thank you for the quote. It does seem like he might not have been given the choice to get a second degree at Northwestern. If so what type of D!€K on a message board should say anything about this fine young man?

I have an MBA from a top 75 program (with honors) and it checked a box for at least one job.  It was a part time program that I did while working so it was free. I’d had accounting and Econ at Michigan and had worked for 10 years at the time.  I learned a couple things but not enough to make it worth it.  If you want to work in a field that is in the area of the university the degree can be good networking even at a lesser program.

Son of a friend of mine played with Hunter at Brownsburg HS. Couldn't come up with superlatives that were superlative enough. Said he was "another level" better than Brandon Peters, who played just down the road. Thought the sky was the limit when he went to Clemson. Funny how these things never seem to work out as planned.

Today, I would take Brandon as a starter over Hunter 7 days/week, and twice on Saturday.  At least Brandon showed some type of football ability at the QB position at both Michigan and Illinois.  Hunter couldn't make it at Clemson, and was a complete failure at NW.

Gimme Brandon, any day, over Hunter when football quarterbacking is the choice.

As many have mentioned, NW MBA > Clemson MBA for ranking, jobs, career connections, etc.

However if he wants to be a GA or football coach in the future, Dabo at Clemson has more connections and well known coaching tree (ie. Venables, Elliott, etc).

On mobile, the thread title looks like...

Clemson gets QB Hunter

Johnson from portal

I was really, really interested in how they found a QB hunter named Johnson and also wondering if we could also get a couple (to replace Hutchinson and OH JA BO).
