Seems pretty reasonable, especially if there's companies like Nike and Honda using their likeness (as opposed to just the university). Article also says Spielman and Archie Griffin both are going to donate any money they receive from the suit.

This really isn't an athlete compensation issue. If Nike were to use your likeness, you would also be granted the right to compensation. Spielman isn't a current athlete at the NCAA level. So he is allowed compensation and has the right to it. Companies are also not allowed to use current college athletes' likeness in any adverisement (the level this is enforced tends to vary). The reason current athletes aren't allowed compensation, is to maintain amateur status. Which is required for participation in NCAA sports. Once your eligibility is up, you're allowed to do whatever you want. The rules are pretty crystal clear. If you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to sign a letter of intent agreeing to the terms. Don't like it, you don't have to play college sports.

Agree to a degree. If some of the pro leagues didn't have rules restricting entry into the league based on college eligibility.  Seems very unjust that the players' unions in some sports are allowed to restrict entry into a professional league based on a prospect's college eligibility.  Talk about collusion.

Huh?

It's not about restricting or not restricting entry...

It's about amateur versus professional.

Spielman, as a NCAA student-athlete was considered an amateur athlete.  In lieu of direct compensation he received aid in kind from the University.

As a graduate, he's NO LONGER an amateur athlete and has a right to compensation.  Consideration goes both ways.

You don't have to play college to make pro leagues. There's the European route in both hockey and basketball. You can sign directly out of high school in baseball. There are amateur tryouts occasionally in football, training camp invites, etc. Sure. Your odds may be increased in certain sports by going to college. But it isn't at all required.

Being associated with OSU in advertising without your permission is a lot like what Joey from "Friends" endured during Season 1...

Nice moment. My favorite moment in the show was still when Monica and Rachel faced-off against Joey and Chandler in a trivia contest for apartments:

Ross: "What was Monica's nickname in hgih school when she was a field hockey goalie?"

Joey: "Ooh, ooh! BIG FAT GOALIE!"

I was on board with it until I read the part where he will donate all money obtained back to the athletic department, seems like a pointless lawsuit, why not donate it to the players who get zero dollars for their likeness?

Issue I have with players suing after the fact is this: you never know how a football player is going to turn out.  Some go on to be superstars and some just don't make the cut.  If Spielman sat on the bench his entire time at OSU, this lawsuit would never get filed, and he would have walked away with a free education. But since he had a successful career now he wants his image back from the school that already compensated him in the form of a scholarship? It's basically heads I win, tails you lose.  What about the other thousands of players who never panned out and the University basically got nothing from them?

But he didn't ride the bench and the school and several large companies are making money off of his name and likeness, why shouldnt he be payed for it. Are you implying a university owns the rights to a person likeness for the rest of their lives because they handed them a scholarship? That's insane.

The players that never panned out are not getting their name and image posted up...not sure what your point is here.

Yes, let us not forget those poor universities that make millions each year off the blood, sweat and broken bones of an unpaid labor force. Those poor, poor institutions...

they receive then? I am all for paying players at the Power Five level, but let's not pretend that they do not receive a significant level of compensation. In a time where many Americans are struggling with student loan debt these players don't have to pay a dime for an undergrad and occasionally, a graduate degree.

Didn't Spielman really like UM back when he was being recruited but his father was a huge OSU fan? Or something like that.

EDIT: just googled it. Yup.

I already had a grudging fondness for Spielman.  Good announcer, really good Detroit Lion, and a good person from all I can gather.

Now he's suing Ohio State?  This makes me like him ... more.

Spielman is one of the best color guys in the business. Him and McDonough were the best team in the booth ESPN had (far better than Fowler and Herbie)

Easily my favorite Buckeye.  (#1 on a VERY short list).

Boy do I wish his dad hadn't talked him out of joining the good guys.  Could have become one of my 10 favorite football players ever.
