OT: Charlie Strong in talks with USF to become next head coach

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

A match made in Heaven if you ask me...

ESPN is reporting Strong is in talks with the Bulls to take over after Willie Taggart left for Oregon.

Why is that interesting? Taggart was trying to get Strong to come to Oregon to be his DC.

Guess he'd rather do that than working for Willie at Oregon. Not a bad choice imo, Taggert has put USF in a decent position and probably offers a shorter route to proving he deserves another P5 gig.

Sucks to be USF.  Like Houston, If they had a stable HC they could be a solid program.  But any time they have success they are just going to get their coach poached. If Strong takes over USF and succeeds, he's not going to be there long.

...and to some extent, I do feel bad for these programs that have the talent and ability and just enough money to sit on the edge of being consistently good, but they cannot keep their coaches and their programs end up being stuck in a continuous up-and-down cycle. It would be cool to see one of them get a coach that finds a home with them for more than a few seasons.

Up until the time Bowden left WVU for Tallahassee, FSU was a football non-entity, and the Seminoles could have been expected to lose Bowden to a more prestigious program before long.

According to Bowden's wikipedia profile, "Bowden became the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles because the climate was warmer than in Morgantown, and because Tallahassee was closer to Birmingham, Alabama, where his mother and mother-in-law both lived... Bowden planned to stay only briefly before taking a better job, perhaps as head coach at Alabama... Bowden declined head coaching job offers from Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and the Atlanta Falcons."

I was worried if Fickell/Coombs left for Cincy that Strong would be DC at OSU.

Edit: Apparently Schiano gets most of the credit for their schematics on defense. Still, Fickell and Coombs are great recruiters.

First couple years it was more about a lack of a functioning offense.  That's why everyone was so excited when they scored so many points against ND this year.  What everyone failed to realize was that the important takeaway from that game was that ND and Texas both had major defensive problems this year.

Doesn't his buyout from Texas get reduced if he finds another job?  What are you doing, Charlie!?  Make that paper and sit on your ass. It's the American Dream!

Without signing the contract apparently. Still shopping around.

I actually think being the DC at Oregon would be a good choice. Give him a break from being HC for a couple years.

but i'm surprised he jumped right back into another coaching gig.  assumed he'd take a year off and let the wounds heal and some of that texas stink wear off before he picked it right back up.  good for him...hope he has a better run this time.  and i agree...much better than being a dc at oregon.

Strong is a good guy but I thought Texas players looked sloppy and undisciplined on the field. People keep saying it was a bad situation etc but I didn't see much evidence he was improving that team year over year. Regardless of how bad a situation was if he was a good coach there would have been some signs on the field. I am in the not very good coach camp for Mr Strong but he may be the best USF can land today.

Strong's L'Ville teams never looked sloppy or undeciplined. Strong should do well there since he has strong (no pun intended) recruiting ties in Florida. I'm pretty sure Strong was on Zook's staff, and Meyer kept him for the recruiting ability and hired Mattison to co-dc.

If healthy, South Florida could very well be a legit threat as a non-Power 5 big bowl bid. Quintin Flowers & Marlon Mack will be a seniors next year.
