OT: Charlie Strong in talks with USF to become next head coach
December 9th, 2016 at 3:33 PM ^
That's ironic since Taggart asked him to be Oregon's new DC.
December 9th, 2016 at 3:35 PM ^
Guess he'd rather do that than working for Willie at Oregon. Not a bad choice imo, Taggert has put USF in a decent position and probably offers a shorter route to proving he deserves another P5 gig.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:45 PM ^
and pays more. Given the current state of Oregon's defense, that DC job is particularly unappealing.
December 9th, 2016 at 5:19 PM ^
Yep. Nobody is going to fix that defense for a couple more years.
December 9th, 2016 at 5:18 PM ^
Was personally kind of hoping he would take a year off and then maybe snag a Big ten gig next year if one or two of them open up. Oh well, USF would be a great spot for Charlie. Really want to see him succeed.
December 9th, 2016 at 3:39 PM ^
Sucks to be USF. Like Houston, If they had a stable HC they could be a solid program. But any time they have success they are just going to get their coach poached. If Strong takes over USF and succeeds, he's not going to be there long.

Every region has those mid-major/major schools that are always on the cusp of being good but aren't good enough to keep their head coaches
Houston, USF/UCF, Cincinnati, Temple...
December 9th, 2016 at 5:56 PM ^
...and to some extent, I do feel bad for these programs that have the talent and ability and just enough money to sit on the edge of being consistently good, but they cannot keep their coaches and their programs end up being stuck in a continuous up-and-down cycle. It would be cool to see one of them get a coach that finds a home with them for more than a few seasons.

Up until the time Bowden left WVU for Tallahassee, FSU was a football non-entity, and the Seminoles could have been expected to lose Bowden to a more prestigious program before long.
According to Bowden's wikipedia profile, "Bowden became the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles because the climate was warmer than in Morgantown, and because Tallahassee was closer to Birmingham, Alabama, where his mother and mother-in-law both lived... Bowden planned to stay only briefly before taking a better job, perhaps as head coach at Alabama... Bowden declined head coaching job offers from Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and the Atlanta Falcons."

I was worried if Fickell/Coombs left for Cincy that Strong would be DC at OSU.
Edit: Apparently Schiano gets most of the credit for their schematics on defense. Still, Fickell and Coombs are great recruiters.

Given how shitty Texas has been at defense since he took over.....

Fair point. I still cringe at a Meyer/Strong reunion though.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:22 PM ^
Eh, his Florida defense didn't put up too much resistance when we played them in the 2008 Citrus Bowl.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:29 PM ^
You guys win.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:25 PM ^
First couple years it was more about a lack of a functioning offense. That's why everyone was so excited when they scored so many points against ND this year. What everyone failed to realize was that the important takeaway from that game was that ND and Texas both had major defensive problems this year.
December 9th, 2016 at 3:50 PM ^
Good. He's gonna clean house. The deadweight will be off that team in no time!
December 9th, 2016 at 3:50 PM ^
Doesn't his buyout from Texas get reduced if he finds another job? What are you doing, Charlie!? Make that paper and sit on your ass. It's the American Dream!
December 9th, 2016 at 3:58 PM ^
Money for nothing and chicks for free.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:06 PM ^
That seems to be the trend for buyouts nowadays. We're not going to see as many coaches take a year or two off as we used to.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:12 PM ^
He asks for a salary based on minimum wage and asks for what he would have been paid given to his asisstants for the length of his contract with Texas. Then, if he's still there, he gets his own raise. Double goodness. He gets to hire good asisstants and still makes good money himself.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:43 PM ^
The lawyers on the board could explain it better, but I believe he has to make something that could pass for market value. Otherwise Texas could object.
December 9th, 2016 at 5:59 PM ^
...asking for a friend
December 9th, 2016 at 3:51 PM ^
He would do excellent there. Recruiting hotbed and he is very well liked in FL

...but he was already in what some would say is an equal or better recruiting hotbed with unlimited resources at texas.
December 9th, 2016 at 9:52 PM ^
recruiting in FL. He went to Texas as an outsider, didn't know the HS coaches.
December 9th, 2016 at 3:57 PM ^
He'll take them to a BCS bowl, as he did L'Ville
December 9th, 2016 at 4:20 PM ^
Or he'll wash out, like his fellow old Big East coaches (Kelly, RichRod, Edsall, Schiano).
December 9th, 2016 at 3:59 PM ^
Great pick and good follow-on job. I look forward to rooting for USF.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:02 PM ^
Does this mean Cristobol is staying put....? say it aint so
December 9th, 2016 at 4:11 PM ^
Cristobal is rumored for Florida Atlantic, not USF.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:04 PM ^
is very well received down here for sure. He has family up the street in Lakeland too... I think it's only a matter of time before this is finalized.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:08 PM ^
Will they out-hit us now too?
December 9th, 2016 at 4:25 PM ^
Without signing the contract apparently. Still shopping around.
I actually think being the DC at Oregon would be a good choice. Give him a break from being HC for a couple years.
December 9th, 2016 at 4:26 PM ^
but i'm surprised he jumped right back into another coaching gig. assumed he'd take a year off and let the wounds heal and some of that texas stink wear off before he picked it right back up. good for him...hope he has a better run this time. and i agree...much better than being a dc at oregon.
December 9th, 2016 at 5:10 PM ^
Hoke is still there.
December 9th, 2016 at 5:21 PM ^
Strong is a good guy but I thought Texas players looked sloppy and undisciplined on the field. People keep saying it was a bad situation etc but I didn't see much evidence he was improving that team year over year. Regardless of how bad a situation was if he was a good coach there would have been some signs on the field. I am in the not very good coach camp for Mr Strong but he may be the best USF can land today.
December 9th, 2016 at 10:44 PM ^
My thoughts exactly! I liken him to the Texas version of Brady Hoke - good person, but in over his head at that particular stop. And it calls into question his work at other head coaching stops (Louisville).
December 9th, 2016 at 5:29 PM ^
Good for him. I thought he got a raw deal at Texas.
December 9th, 2016 at 9:19 PM ^
Dude that's like people saying hoke or rich rod got a raw deal. Strong shit the bed and deserves to take a massive dump to a power 5
December 9th, 2016 at 6:14 PM ^
I think that would be a smart hire for USF.
December 9th, 2016 at 6:22 PM ^
Strong's L'Ville teams never looked sloppy or undeciplined. Strong should do well there since he has strong (no pun intended) recruiting ties in Florida. I'm pretty sure Strong was on Zook's staff, and Meyer kept him for the recruiting ability and hired Mattison to co-dc.
December 9th, 2016 at 6:58 PM ^
If healthy, South Florida could very well be a legit threat as a non-Power 5 big bowl bid. Quintin Flowers & Marlon Mack will be a seniors next year.
December 9th, 2016 at 10:59 PM ^
Good luck to Chuck. Love how he handled the mess Mack left at Tejas. I wish him well.
