OT: Byron Cowart, 2015's #1 overall recruit, transferring

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

Brian has noted on multiple occasions how much better scouting has gotten at the recruiting sites, in terms of having the top players turning into stars. This appears to be the exception.

Cowart never became a starter and recently moved inside from end. He was heavily recruited by Auburn and Florida, and came over to Auburn when Muschamp was fired at UF and became the Tigers' offensive coordinator.

I think the analysis the OP is referring to is that about 80 percent of five stars get drafted or something like that.

Yes, he's a high five star so the odds might be more like 90 percent, but that still means that we would expect about one top 10 recruit per year to not pan out as productive in college, and this guy might be one of them.

But he's still a junior.  If he wants to play somewhere, he could still put it together a la Will Campbell to get drafted and make some money as a pro. Incidentally, I just looked up Big Will and he's playing as an offensive tackle (!!!) in the CFL.  Crazy.

Was strolling through the 247 composite for 2015...lotta misses in there.  That class in general is a good reminder of why you shouldn't get caught up in rankings.  I mean...just look at the QBs:

1. Josh Rosen

2. Blake Barnett

3. Kyler Murray

4. Jarrett Stidham

5. Brandon Wimbush

Notable others:

Sam Darnold (12), Zach Gentry (14), Alex Malzone (20), Lamar Jackson (27), Kelly Bryant (29)

Michigan had TWO(!!) QBs ranked higher that the Heisman winner and Clemson's current stud QB.

Most of them are RsSo., so they still have time to make an impact, especially the ones that transferred, and fell off the radar because of sitting out.

I think Josh Rosen's ranking as the top QB was warranted since he was the most college-ready QB in the class, and scouts still talk about him as a potential top-5 pick in the upcoming draft.

Jarrett Stidham and Brandon Wimbush are both RsSo. 3 games into their first year as starters for their respective teams.

Kyler Murray looks like the next in line to run Lincoln Riley's offense at Oklahoma once Baker Mayfield graduates.

Blake Barnett was beaten out by Jalen Hurts and transferred, but could still put it together at ASU after he sits out the year.

I can see that...because the jokes are still relative to whoever most resembles the personality of the characters at that point in your life.

But enough The Office talk, this isn't OT season and I'm afraid we may get in trouble. I'll see you in late January and we can continue this conversation.
