OT- Best Restaurant You Have Eaten At?

Submitted by Wolverine in 312 on

I have started eating eating (meaning not going to Applebees/Outback Steakhouse for dinner) in the past couple years with an older brother as a chef. Where are some of your favorite eateries (local or otherwise). Any suggestions for midwest cities?

Philadelphia, PA. Just outside the naval base. O.M.G.. I can't say they had the best cheesesteaks in Philly, because honestly, it's the only place I went to, but it was the only place I needed to go. Oregon Avenue had a very good reputation; word was Bill Cosby would send his Chauffeur from New York to fetch him some from time to time. I gained immense poundage during my days in Philly; had I chose to stay there after my enlistment ended, I'd be dead from a coronary by now.

After several years of research:

Breakfast - Al's Breakfast in Dinkytown (joint of all joints) on Minnesota's campus

Lunch - Nook's in St. Paul (burger joint), get the Nookie Supreme

Dinner - Restaurant Alma or 112 Eatery or Oceanaire (best crabcakes)

Best ever? Way too hard.  Shaw's in New Harbor, Maine for lobster comes to mind, Chez Paul in Paris and a pizza joint in Chur, Switzerland (can't remember the name)

Not sure that it was the best I have ever had but the cajun place just east of battle creek off of 94 (in the hotel next to the new casino) was really good, highly recommend it to anyone nearby.  Never had etouffee before that, amazing.

The House of Nanking in San Francisco's Chinatown. Most amazing Chinese food I have ever had. I also had the most amazing seafood at a place called Quay 4 in Cape Town South Africa and it was fairly inexpensive too.

I've been to so many restaurants over the years that its hard to say which is the best.  Lately though I've been enjoying Del Posto in NYC.   Their dinner hasn't been great, but their $29 prix fixe lunch is out of this world.  Not only is the food fantastic, but the price in incredible.  On top of the three courses you get a few amuse bouche at the start and a small plate of treats to go wtih the desserts.  (And the dessert is one of the  courses but is so much better than most of the desserts you see on prix fixe menus)

If you aren't working in the afternoon, or you don't mind having some alcohol at lunch, you can have wine pairings with the 3 courses for only $15.  They aren't huge pours but its a nice amount of wine that pairs nicely with the courses, and if you finish the wine before you finish the course they will pour you a bit more.

Stag is the Missouri equivalent of Beast.  It's what all the fraternities at Mizzou serve at their pre-parties (or at least that is what I drank there about 8 years ago - damn I'm getting old).

It's still pretty legit for a $3 per six pack type of beer.

If your travels ever take you to Saltillo, you must stop at this little place called Casa del Caballo....and no they don't serve horse meat.  I've had the best brisket and ribeye at that place.

In West Lafayette, IN XXX is freaking awesome, especially when you are drunk as hell. Get the Dwayne Pervis burger. It is a burger with peanut butter. The root beer floats are great. The root beer is made in house.

I eat out once a week at a Japanese steakhouse called Ginza in Cockeysville, MD.  Their sushi is very good and you can't beat the price - $9.95 for all you can eat at lunch.

In  Michigan, the Montague Inn (Saginaw), is very good.

Chop House for me.  That experience was unreal and the steak was fantastic.

My favorite Detroit restaurants are Le Petit Zinc (French), Slows BBQ, and El Comal (Mexican).

Lake Park Bistro in Milwaukee is top-notch French with an amazing view.  I hear Sanford is really good but I've never eaten there, but their other place Coquette Cafe is delish.

In Paris, I have two little places I like, Le Temps Perdu and Pain, Vin et Fromage.  The first is on rue du Seine, and the second is on rue Geoffroy-L'Angevin.  Also Laduree for sweets.

I also think I have been to every hole-in-the-wall vegetarian Indian place on the East Coast, and I highly recommend Madras Saravana Bhavan in Atlanta and Woodlands in Orlando/Ft. Lauderdale if you like Indian food, esp. South Indian food.

In Detroit, try Giovanni's for Italian. Best pasta west of New York. For a steak, try Wolfgang Puck's Cut. Get the Kobe beef. The best food anywhere is in Napa at the Frrnch Laundry...wow.

But the restaurant at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham is incredible. The roast Amish chicken is unreal. Expensive, but worth it. Also, I second the Chop House.

The restaurant in the Townsend is the Rugby Grill - agree its expensive but worth it.  Not to mention the you might spot a celeb who is staying there.  If you are in Birmingham, also try the Forest Grill.  The food is nothing short of amazing.

I have been to were Guy Savoy in Vegas and Volt in Frederick MD (DC area).  If you go to Volt, do table 21, the kitchen table...fan-freaking-tastic.

The best, anywhere, hands down, was actually the Murano, a specialty place on the Celebrity Century cruise ship. But since I expect nobody would go cruising just to eat:

The Navy Bistro in Toledo is fantastic.

The Chop House in Ann Arbor is almost worth the super expensive price.

Just had dinner Sunday night at Shaw's Crab House in Chicago, and that's probably one of the best dinners I've ever had. The steak was sublime, and the shrimp and scallops absolutely melted in my mouth.

I'm guessing that The Chop House is A2's equivalent of Joseph's, which is the local steakhouse in Iowa City.

I will say just this for anyone making the trip out to IC: I'm a vegetarian, and I still loved my entire meal at Joseph's.  I would think that meat-eaters would love it even more.

When I visit my parents in Florida we go to a restaurant called Bistro AIX in Jacksonville and that's one of my favorite places down there.
