OT: Beckman Investigation Report concludes...Beckman is an a-hole

Submitted by BroadShouldersBlue on

Illinois just released the full report. Prety awful. From Yahoo:

  • Beckman was found to have “repeatedly communicated with players in ways, both explicit and implicit, that had the effect of deterring them from sharing information with sports medicine staff about injuries” and “engaged in a pattern of criticizing and demeaning players for seeking evaluation by an athletic trainer during practice, promoting the idea of playing through injuries, belittling injuries, and encouraging players to minimize their injuries.”
  •  Beckman routinely using vulgarities toward injured players in practice, calling a player with a suspected concussion (who went on to miss the rest of the season) “scared,” yelling at a player to return to a practice drill when trainers “thought the player could have dislocated his hip,” and “habitually” telling players that he does not “believe in hamstring injuries.”

Yikes.

If Beckman doesn't believe in hamstring injuries, he obviously hasn't had one. It's just about the worst thing ever, even just to function on an everyday level--much less try to play a sport.

What a buffoon.

Wow… Just wow. I knew it was bad but I can't believe this. I think Beckman's coaching future is shot for the  foreseeable future. Quite franklyI'd be surprised if anyone ever takes a chance on this guy again. At least on the FBS level.

That he wasn't that good of a coach. They have already won 5 games (6-7 last year) with their best receiver, Dudek, out for the year, and Donovonn Young (graduated).

As a strange sidenote to a rather disturbing portrait of Tim Beckman (who hopefully will never find a job in coaching anywhere now), there is the story surrounding the weird levels to which he took the Illinois-Northwestern rivalry - LINK TO INSIDE NU STORY

For example, this oh-so-original countdown clock:

This guys was a coordinator at OSU and the head coach of Toledo for more than 5 years. How did he manage that this without any incidents?

The only word for a boss, or other person in authority, to disregard medical advice is: dangerous. This is a person who will cause harm to others through their disregard of basic safety.

Sports medicine folks WANT players to play. Part of the training understands that the goal is to get players healthy enough to play, and to keep them in good health while playing.

Finishing a series, or a game, or a practice, with a developing injury can easily worsen it to the point that it jeapordizes that players season, career or long term health.

Also, Beckman is a dick.

Hope that guy never finds another job coaching again. If you're a bad coach, that's one thing. But to be a scumbag of a human being and do the things that Beckman did, putting at risk the health and safety of players that have committed four years of your life to you, that's unforgivable. He's not just a terrible coach; he's dangerous.

If not one of the coaches stood up for these players, knew what was going on, and didn't say anything, they're just as guilty as Beckman, and ought to all be fired immediately after the season.

to stay on when the head coach who brought them there gets fired. Assistants only get an opportunity when the head coach leaves for greener pastures or quits outright. I guess what I mean is when they throw out the baby the bath water must go with him.
