OT - Baylor hires Temple's Matt Rhule as new HC

Link to Fox Sports article on it, but Baylor found their new coach to replace Art Briles, who was fired for being a terrible person in regards to several Title IX issues within the program.

Rhule led Temple to two of their best seasons ever, capping it off with a 10-3 season this year and an AAC conference championship with a 34-10 win over Navy in their CCG.

Good hire for Baylor. Hopefully he doesn't generate too much hype that some of the Texas guys we're in on (Filiaga) start giving them more looks.

Also, I'd imagine the Temple job would be a decent opening for several Big Ten assistant coaches, perhaps like someone from OSU (Fickell?). Could draw some conference assistants out.

Forget all that stuff... Hopefully he doesn't spend the next 5 years turning a blind eye to dozens of his players gang-raping women... <<END HOPES FOR RHULE AT BAYLOR>>

I really wanted them to hire someone unlikeable, because it's so easy to hate Baylor Football right now. But I like Matt Rhule; what he did at Temple (20 wins and a conference title the last 2 seasons) is impressive.

The AAC has (HAD) multple legitimate coaches. Sad to see that the conference getting took like that they have over the past 2 seasons. (Rhule to Baylor, Justin Fuente to Va Tech, Herman to Texas and Willie Taggart is getting top tier interest)

Toxic job right now. Very Penn State-ish with how alum and boosters refuse to acknowledge Briles was the problem, or even did anything wrong. Rhule will have to clean house and bring in a new staff. Also read Baylor's been doing virtually no recruiting since a) the program is a hot mess and b) every coach on the staff is a lame duck. Rhule will have to work a miracle to get a decent class.

UGH! He deserves better.

Fuck Baylor.

He's a New England guy...I would've must rather seen him stay up there. He's going to stick out like a sore thumb down at Baylor.

They should've got what they deserved...

You've got an ocean of cultural differences between Philly & actual New England. Philadelphia is basically just Philadelphia but the main influences there are some Chesepeake, some NYC, and some Jersey. There is 0 New England anything in Philly.

New England's bounds are basically the very, very eastern part of Upstate NY and somewhere in Connecticut

It was a joke hence my use of ish... I actually grew up in both New Jersey and New Hampshire so I'm aware of which states constitute New England. That said, Philly (a Northeastern city) and Boston (a New England city) share a lot of similarities as do Pittsburgh (a Northeastern city) and Cleveland (a Midwestern city).

Toxic culture, no history pre-Briles, coach from the opposite side of the country who has never even worked in the same region

What could possibly go wrong here?

If Baylor was looking for a hire that was, in every measurable sense, not what was there before both culturally and otherwise, then this is probably a good move for them. Still, I wonder what Rhule could do to overcome the toxicity of the air in Waco, if you will, because part of lasting success involves that, if you're Baylor, assuming this is their attempt to find "a better way", if you will.

But therein lies the problem... when you're trying to find someone who's totally different than what you had you sometimes lose a lot in translation. Briles is a piece of shit, but he was a country fried, don't mess with Texas piece of shit with a flair for offense and working relationships with every high school coach in the state.

Not only is Rhule coming from across the country, but he needs to clean house. He can't just bring his old staff with him either, without putting himself in an even bigger hole for recruiting. It will be interesting to see what kind of a staff he puts together.

Usually a new coach's first priority in recruiting is to salvage the current class, but he's got to build one almost from scratch.

On the bright side, Baylor is in Texas, which is a recruiting hot bed. Usually a lot of early coaches will try and focus on locking down the state or building in state connection. At a Texas school, that's pretty easy given the number of high caliber prospects that they have.

Not saying he's gonna start landing 5*'s, but Texas is filled with a lot talented players who want to stay close to home. He should do fine.

for 2017. Even though Texas has a lot of local talent, starting this late is going to be very hard. Coming in as a relative unknown in TX, with no local connections adds to his problems. They also suffered defections from their last class after signing day, so have extra slots to fill. They'll get somebody, but staying competitive is the challenge.

Seems like a odd fit. It's not only a cultural mismatch but he's a defensive minded coach entering a offensive minded league where defense is optional. That's part of the reason why Strong failed at Texas.

Seems like he could have waited another year for other P5 jobs to open up. Within the B1G, I could see Minnesota or Indiana opening up. Those jobs aren't necessarily better than Baylor but they would be better fits. I guess time will tell.

Matt Rhule has done a pretty good job and most of his experience is on the East Coast/Midwest. I would have thought he would have held out for a Big Ten or ACC job.

Maybe Temple is going to have a talent dropoff next year and he felt he had to strike before his star dimmed?

The only opening this year was Purdue. I don't think a single coach is on the hot seat going in to 2017. There is always risk to waiting. Jobs like Baylor don't come along too often. By that I mean, high paying, possibly high profile jobs that the usual candidates wouldn't touch.

I thought he would hold out for another year if the right job was not available this year. I think he turned down some interest from decent jobs like Maryland and Virginia last year. It's possible he was gambling on PSU opening up this year and now decided to move after Franklin got off the hot seat.

I don't like it. Matt Rhule is a really good coach for Temple, but I don't think he will really do well somewhere else. Texas is a whole different ballgame from Philadelphia. If he succeeds, then all the power to him. I am sad to see him leave Temple, so I am a bit biased.

He's a good coach, but this is a big uptick in expectations and recruiting. I'm wondering if he's cursing not beating PSU this year and getting Franklin fired.
