More like the Mudhens are being no-hit HUR HUR.
It would be interesting to see what happens if the Tigers don't get a hit in the top of the 9th... could we be celebrating a walk-off no-hitter in the dugout? Or a 10-inning no-hit attempt?
Intriguing...
Nice start from JV today.

Top of the 9th. Avila, Kelly, and Dirks due up.
September 29th, 2013 at 2:57 PM ^
Also, this is one of the biggest strike zones I've ever seen. No wonder there's only 4 hits total.
September 29th, 2013 at 3:15 PM ^
Probably true everywhere. Everybody including the umpires is ready to go home for the winter and I'm guessing the late-innings-in-a-blowout strikezone is in effect everywhere but the three games that still matter.
Not many runs being scored today.

This is not good. The Tigers offense enters the postseason in a serious drought.

The "Tigers" were not no hit... Now, yes, the htting has slipped a bit the last two weeks... However, the team still has the best batting average in the bigs.

Maybe I'm wrong, but haven't the Tigers pretty much always played like crap after they've clinched a playoff spot under Leyland? It hasn't seemed to have hurt them in the playoffs. Games like today's are just about selling tickets and getting AAA guys a little experience, nothing more.
September 29th, 2013 at 3:06 PM ^
September 29th, 2013 at 3:10 PM ^
Kinda bummer Porcello didn't get a second inning... Jim Leyland must be pulling for the no-hitter.
/sarcasm!

Hahaha, good for the Marlins.
Putkonen is such a bum though. What an embarrassment.

September 29th, 2013 at 3:20 PM ^
Good for the Marlins.
September 29th, 2013 at 3:35 PM ^
I may be in unpopular opinion, but I think the Tigers are the worst division winners in the leaugue. Maybe being swept by the worst team in the NL is making me bitter, maybe.
Edit: Definitely bitter because we were swept by the worst team in the NL.
September 29th, 2013 at 3:52 PM ^
You're kidding right? Did you see today's lineup?
September 29th, 2013 at 4:01 PM ^
September 29th, 2013 at 5:05 PM ^
Yes, I did, hence:
Maybe being swept by the worst team in the NL is making me bitter, maybe. Edit: Definitely bitter because we were swept by the worst team in the NL.
Still, what about Friday's lineup, or last night's lineup? Surely we should've taken one game from the NL worst, even if not our best lineup.
What concerns me is that, while having the roster to win the World Series, Leland mismanages it, and it seems that lately we haven't been able to get our pitching and hitting to be good at the same time. We may pitch great, but then we hit poorly, or we may pitch poorly and then hit great. It would be nice if we could get some complete games.
September 29th, 2013 at 8:04 PM ^
the Tigers won the division and has zero incentive to do well against the Marlins. They wanted to rest their star player. Jim Leyland is one of the best manager the Tigers ever had in their franchise history.
Worst division winner in the league? lololololol. They got the 2nd best run differential in the AL league and the 3rd best run differential in the MLB. That is a better predictor of the quality of a team over the season.
I still expect the Tigers to go to the WS anyway. Your "the sky is falling" is hilarious.

tigers have limped into the playoffs by playing only fair against the weakest teams in baseball. they have zero momentum against good teams right now, and i could easily see oakland handing their heads to them.
September 29th, 2013 at 4:00 PM ^
In short, please. Enough of the talk radio concerns. The tigers may very well lose to the A's, but it won't be because of some mythical lack of momentum.

While it would have been nice to get homefield for the first round (still was possible going into the weekend series I believe), as soon as Detroit lost on Friday the remaining two games were completely worthless. Anyone gnashing their teeth over what was basically a AAA lineup getting no-hit against a decent major league pitcher needs to relax a bit. This game meant nothing.
As well, for the folks wailing that Oakland will come in and annihilate Detroit in the postseason: please see 2012 and 2006. Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow.
September 29th, 2013 at 4:17 PM ^
Not really that surprising. It was a nothing game for the Tigers; they haven't really been trying since they clinched. Almost picked up Alvarez for my final fantasy spot; would have been nice.
September 29th, 2013 at 4:24 PM ^
1) Cabrera can't run & no extra-base power (he's awesome, but clearly hurt)
2) Iglesias' injured hand
3) bullpen worries re-emerged very lately; 1st two blown saves since Benoit took over
4) Austin Jackson slumping (with that one-game of the three HR in one inning exception--he was 3 of 4, I think)
5) verlander has not re-appeared (tho his last outing brightest sign of anything lately)
So, yeah, I'm worried. It's not this series; it's this last month (tho they continues about .60 ball, which wins the Series, if they can continue that!
September 29th, 2013 at 5:02 PM ^
JV was brilliant in his final two starts of the season, and September was easily his best month since April:
G | GS | W | L | CG | SHO | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | K | ERA | WHIP | BAA | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
5 | 5 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 33.2 | 31 | 10 | 10 | 2 | 9 | 38 | 2.67 | 1.19 | .250 |

Your facts are getting in the way of annectotal arguments!!!
Also, Iglesias was back today. Throw in the 4 days off and the 3 de facto days off this past weekend and Miggy and Iggy might be (hopefully!) ready to go.
And really, that was the goal of this series: to get heathly. The odds of us overtaking Oakland coming into the series were very, very slim. The probabilities said "play the 'get healthy' game." Hopefully, it works and the rest is just what Miguel and Jose needed.
Plus, the Tigers' rotation - after getting a little bumpy in late August - has been exceptional the last two weeks. Plus, I'm loving Porcello out of the pen. He's been gunning that fastball up to 96 lately and will be a very nice option to have late.

were completely and utterly worthless from a Tigers perspective. Winning or losing did not matter. For several of these guys returning to South Florida was virtually going home. This was a working vacation without the work.
What Tigers fans should be more worried about is this:
Oakland 4 Detroit 3
Detroit 7 Oakland 3
Detroit 10 Oakland 1
Oakland 8 Detroit 6
Oakland 6 Detroit 3
Oakland 14 Detroit 4
Detroit 7 Oakland 6 .......this was a bottom of the 9th 3 run home walk-off by Hunter
And your closer blew his first two saves of the season in the last week, given last years near playoff disaster from the bullpen, not a great way to enter the playoffs.
September 29th, 2013 at 4:56 PM ^
Here's why I'm not freaking out:
1 | October 6 | Oakland Athletics – 1, Detroit Tigers – 3 | Comerica Park | 2:56 | 43,323[7] |
2 | October 7 | Oakland Athletics – 4, Detroit Tigers – 5 | Comerica Park | 3:28 | 40,684[8] |
3 | October 9 | Detroit Tigers – 0, Oakland Athletics – 2 | O.co Coliseum | 2:33 | 37,090[9] |
4 | October 10 | Detroit Tigers – 3, Oakland Athletics – 4 | O.co Coliseum | 3:21 | 36,385[10] |
5 | October 11 | Detroit Tigers – 6, Oakland Athletics – 0 | O.co Coliseum | 2:56 | 36,393[11] |
