OT: "After Settlement, Florida State Shows Sympathy for Victim: Itself"
The thread title basically says it all. But here is the link if you want to read the story (which I had not seen posted or mentioned here):
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/30/sports/ncaafootball/florida-state-pro…
The article is a mix of basic facts about the case and the settlement, but with a pretty strong editorial slant destroying FSU. The fact that the president of the university has taken the stance he has - which is basically, "we did nothing wrong at all, but are settling to avoid more frivolous litigation expenses" (which is total BS, as they are being covered by boosters anyway) - is pretty atrocious. If you needed to dislike FSU and/or Jameis Winston more, this may help!

is astounding...NOW they sympathy for the victim?...This was the plan all along...Wait till they win their NC wait until hes gone then come clean...If he didnt do anything wrong WHY SETTLE?...Theirs alot about FSU that just Stinks its obvious they will do pretty much anything to protect athletes in Talahasse and that includes their supporters in the Police Dept..The FSU administration KNOWINGLY protected a rapist....

No doubt. But after a case that was clearly botched and covered up, you'd think the guy would at least be a bit more contrite when discussing it. How about, "we just want to put this unfortunate incident behind us, pursue our strategies for preventing it in the future, and move on." Why be a douche about the potential victim in the case, who by all accounts got run off campus?

Meh. After reading into the whole fiasco and the multiple changing stories regarding their police department and Kinsman, I've come to the conclusion that nobody knows what really happened and the more this stays out of the headlines the better it is for FSU.
Winston has a pending lawsuit against Kinsman, and if he wins that lawsuit, then I think that says more about who was right at the end of the day.

so, assuming arguendo, there is a settlement in the Winston case you reference, your position is that settlement trumps this one? Wow.
February 4th, 2016 at 8:58 PM ^
If there's a settlement in that one, then it's just that another settlement. There's nothing to conclude. If Winston's lawyers win the case outright, then I think that does say something or vice versa.

I agree: none of us will ever know what happened. While the Kinsman side was hammered into the public consciousness by the media, nobody bothered with Winston's side. According to three people who lived either with him or in his building, Kinsman was "seeing" Winston for about three months and only decided it was "assault" when Winston refused to leave his GF for her.
Winston was a pig and an idiot, but that doesn't necessarily mean he committed any sexual assault. The fact that he wasn't prosecuted pretty much says everything about the actual evidence in the case. If the prosecutors thought they had a chance of winning, they would have pressed charges.
I just wish she would take her money and disappear.

In all seriousness, this is disgusting.

I had a buddy back in 10th grade who was falsely accused. Actually knew him and his girlfriend through youth group believe it or not. They had sex once and she was worried she was pregnant so she cried rape. They went to court and the whole ordeal carried on for like a year and he was dragged through the mud before she finally admitted that she lied (which everyone who knew him and who knew her knew was the case from the start)
She got off with no punishment as far as I know but he was denied admission from a few christian colleges he wanted to go to because he had 'accused of rape' hanging over his head when he applied. Ended up going to a junior college and lost track of him after that. So yeah, you can ruin someone's life in a hurry.
TL;DR - don't say someone raped you if they didn't

Victim shaming: Never OK.
February 4th, 2016 at 7:43 PM ^
You're right. There should be no scrutiny whatsoever on a woman's story that has multiple holes in it because that's sexist and victim shaming.
I'm sure Brian Banks agrees.

Do we know who the victim is? Just because Jameis is a moron doesn't mean he's automatically guilty. Seems like some he said she said here.

Regardless of painting her as a slut or not, her testimony never added up and changed many times through the process.

Doesn't mean he's wrong. Doesn't mean he's right. Just a fact that should be part of the discussion.

FWIW, I agree with the main point you are trying to make about the injustice of it all. I just think settling is somewhat an admission of guilt, especially in this instance when the president starts the "we don't want to lose more money" cry.

No, I did not. And it not "false reporting" it is false accusations.
I'm sure the stats are sad, just not in the way you think. No doubt have some handy cooking by a lowered standard to be classified.
I'm not making light of rape. I am making light of keyboard crusaders like you that just want to feel soo bad for the person making the accusation.
I know I shouldnt doubt the NYTimes, I mean ever since they nailed that whole Hitler thing they should be beyond contestation.

I'm a pretty knowledgeable fella. Funny how say you'll say nothing just after you said something. I know you want to get all touchy feely and stand by all those oppressed, real or otherwise.
Quit wasting time here, and go check into your white male privilege workshop.

You are in the same place I am as a father of a daughter. It is NEVER the woman's "fault' if she gets assaulted. At the same time, a woman can do a great deal to diminish the odds of an assault. That is precisely what I am teaching my daughter; no, wearing a short skirt and flirting doesn't make her to blame, but at some point "blame" is irrelevant. What has actually happened and its consequences are all that matters. So be smart, avoid potential trouble situations, and all will be better off. I hope it works for her...

Circling the wagons pretty hard here, I see.
Paranoia, victim shaming, deflecting any criticism of FSU... If anything, you're reinforcing the criticisms on the university here. Apparently they incubate the kind of culture in which football players are invincible, and everyone else is either just trying to make a buck or shame the program.
February 5th, 2016 at 2:39 AM ^
I hate FSU and dislike Jameis as much as most people and wanted her story to be true because it makes them evil but the more I've read about it the more obviously likely it has become that she is full of shit.
