OSU under lights again (cars for all, not just TP)

ESPN article investigating memoribilia-laden dealerships and their "deals" to players and their families....  I'm beginning to think some of the local media/fans are just wanting to just "get it all out there now" and take their lumps in one fell swoop...  so they can move on.

Tom tweeted that there wasn't any earth-shattering news (i.e., no commitment).  He said he'd have quotes on Monday.  Probably too much to expect him to flip so soon, and I doubt we'll hear anything more than general fluff until (if) he decides to actually flip, since he has to appease OSU in the interim.

Along with tax breaks for the dealer, why would relatives and family in different states (literally) buy cars in Columbus? Is THAT so hard to see? They're obviously using booster cash to get these cars at a lower cost, while hiding the booster cash flow. I also agree with the poster who mentioned athletes giving the dealer and salesman tickets. Why do this if you hadn't already received something?

This is the sticking point for me as well.  Sure, maybe the athletes are guided to a couple dealerships so OSU can monitor the purchases, whatever.  Sure, maybe the occasional parent takes their kid car shopping at said dealership.  It doesn't make sense though, for many parents to be buying personal cars at said dealerships (or even cars for their kids) when there are dealerships in their home state that would be willing to work with them UNLESS they're getting some kind of sketch deal at these OSU-connected dealerships.

This is a post from a Buckeye fan on an OSU forum...

Why doesn't the University pay the Dispatch to shut the hell up! The circ is bad they call my house every week trying to get me to sign up for their rag. The University should just say "we will by 1,000 subscriptions" go write about something else.

some claims were exagerated, but the NCAA found them to be true enough to hit us with probation and doc'd us practice time...(I understand it was the University who administered the punishment, but in accordance to what they believed the NCAA thought was appropriate to stem additional punishment)

The penalties were for inadvertently logging hours in an improper manner. The allegations from the Freep included a high-level cover up of massive breaches in practice hour rules.

In essence they were alleging murder when what actually happened was more along the lines of doing five over on I-94.

actually, they also admitted to exceeding practice limits

I understand your point that it is minor and was blown greatly out of proportion by the FP, but my original post addressed the point that who are we to judge fans from the OSU for making harsh and rash claims towards a local newspaper. We all but declared war

I don't believe any of us were asking the university to pay off a local newspaper to keep quiet. That is just low man. That's all I'm saying. All we did was boycott the freep for slandering the Michigan brand and completely falsifying what actually happened. I see where your coming from but that comment that fan said was way worse than what any of us have ever said.

This is absolutely shocking. I cannot believe that ohio players would be on the take. Is there no bottom to the pit of lies that little troll Tressel has been digging?

I worked at a dealership that had professional and college athletes come in and let me explain something, First of all UNLESS the dealership (they're all dirty) is getting something in return they are not giving 3 DAY TEST DRIVES IN A GMC YUKON DENALI ! (Terrelle Pryor)  The athletes we dealt with never even asked for ANY special treatment. The college athlete I sold came from a family that had money and and he couldn't afford to get the car on his own. So when T. Pryors family's that are just above the poverty line and then finacing cars! CAN'T HAPPEN! So enjoy the ride because they are in big trouble. Lying, dirty, chestnuts! We ALL knew they were cheating when M. Clarett was tooling around in a Lexus! And don't believe for one minute those scumbags at the NCAA didn't turn their heads too! It was WAY TOO OBVIOUS!

AJ Green from UGA sold a worn game jersey on ebay or whatever for about $1000-1500 and was suspended for 3 games. The OSU players not only sold game worn equipment, but traded them for free for automobiles, tatoos, and whatever else they like down in CBUS. I find it hard to believe that OSU and JT will have last years wins stripped and potentially have more suspensions

The ramifications of this and the Tressel situation will get a lot of press over the next few months. Though some of ohio's recruits may think twice about going to ohio, and maybe even commit to Michigan, what is bad for ohio also reflects on the B1G.

Ohio seams to be making the B1G in par with the SEC and that is disturbing to me.

I could give a rat's ass about Ohio State's reflection on the B1G or Michigan. At the end of this "process" everything that has been talked about on this blog for years...for years, since the haloscan era: Clarett being dirty, loaner cars, improper benefits, tatgate, Tressel "the Senator" lying and full of deceit...just like Pete Carroll and USC it will all eventually come out and columbus will burn...and I will enjoy every moment.

This is pretty straight forward, but it hinges on what the NCAA can prove. This time they seem to have a good start, as I can't see this dealership biting Thaddeus Gibson's bullet for him and admitting to lying about reported purchase pricing. I can't say I'd be surprised by anything that involves Ohio State players in Columbus. This city worships the ground they walk on, and everyone strives to be tight with these guys. Imagine Denard Robinson taking a three day test drive? I didn't think so.

"Two former NCAA enforcement officials, who spoke to The Dispatch on the condition of anonymity, individually said there's cause for concern.

The two collectively have decades of NCAA compliance experience. Neither had ever heard of so many athletes buying cars from the same salesman."

with what happened to AJ Green, I can't believe the NCAA would not come down hard on these guys and the OSU athletic dept. in general. I worked in college athletics for nearly 10 years and one of my best friends used to be the compliance director. In his words.....'they're screwed'.

that makes me uneasy about Jamie Morris being in the car sales business now.

Anyone would have to be nieve to think this doesn't go on everywhere in some way, shape or form.

"The rules prohibit athletes and their relatives from receiving discounts that are not offered to the general public."

But this offer was extended to the general public: anyone who brings in an authentic signed OSU game warn jersey and tickets to the National Championship/Fiesta Bowl can trade them in for a lightly used car.

I would imagine that the dealership also pays federal taxes; if they are handing out cars in exchange for memorabilia and putting the trades as "$0 purchase"s or straight-up loss on the books, Uncle Sam will be very interested indeed.

I sure do hope he's watching this mess with the same disgust the rest of the country is. He should now see more clearly that vestboy is nearly gone.

While Sen. Tressel has been busy cultivating his saintly image his players have been out "painting the town . . .shall we say . . . scarlet." Where there is smoke there is fire and thats really all there is to it.

The article alsomentions other athletes. I have always been curious about one Mr. Thad Matta's program?

I've wondered the same thing myself about their basketball team. They've had a good run of success lately going back around what, 5 years or so? OSU basketball doesn't have the religious following that football does, but with the high-profile players that have suited up for Matta I have to wonder if some of those players were getting the same deals that the football players were. Obviously we haven't heard anything to this point so this is 100% speculation on my part.

These two quotes were my winners, first the compliance director trying to cover his ass:

"I'm not a car expert. We have to rely on their integrity and their word when it comes to selling a car."

The integrity and word of a used car salesman, woo hoo hoo.The part-owner of the dealership too was in big time CYA mode:

"No one can tell you what a car's worth," Goss said.

Not Kelly Blue Book, not car salesmen, nobody. Everybody steals, everybody murders, but no one in CBus can tell you that a 2-year-old Chrysler 300 is worth $0 or not.
