OSU lands #1 2024 Prospect (QB)

Feels like OSU's recruiting momentum never slows down.

Haven't heard much about Michigan having momentum with many studs following such a magnificent season, which is kind of depressing. Hopefully the staff can light it up this summer.

reminds me of an excruciating time written about by Chris Jaffe 10 years ago

In August 1972 Billy Martin had a problem. He was in his first season managing the Tigers and trying his damnedest to keep the club in a pennant race. Less than two weeks ago, Detroit had been in first place in the AL East, 2.5 games ahead of anyone else.

Since then, the Tigers had hit the skids, dropping 10 of 14, including four in a row to fall a game behind the defending AL champion Orioles. The culprit for Detroit’s fall was its offense. They’d scored one run or fewer in eight of their last 14 games, including all of the last four.

With the last-place Indians in town of a doubleheader, Martin wanted to right the ship. He sought to shake things up and, hopefully, make things fun for his players to loosen them up.

So he came up with a novel brainstorm. Instead of going with the typical batting order, he’d try something different. Well, so far there’s nothing novel in that at all. Changing the batting order for a slumping team is as routine as it gets.

Aye, but Martin didn’t just make some small changes to the order; he completely blew up the process of picking the batting order. You see, Martin thought it would get everyone’s attention if he picked the batting order out of a hat.

Oh, the pitcher would still bat last—Martin wasn’t going that crazy. But the other eight would be determined by random luck of the draw.

And so it came to be that star slugger Norm Cash batted leadoff. It was the second and final time in his career he did that. Taking Cash’s usual place in the cleanup slot was shortstop Ed Brinkman, who would hit .203 with six homers on the year. Well, if that’s how the hat sorted them out, then that’s what the Tigers would do.

Maybe it’s a coincidence or maybe not, but the Tigers won that game with their odd lineup, 3-2. Sure, three runs isn’t much of an offensive barrage, but please note that the opposing pitcher was Gaylord Perry, who would win a Cy Young Award that season for his outstanding pitching.

Oh, and some of the unlikely placed Tigers hitters played a key role. Cash laced a pair of hits in his leadoff role. But the big hero was the most unlikely one of all, Brinkman. In the sixth inning, he doubled home the tying run and minutes later scored the winning run.

This win proved to be a big help for Detroit, as they ended the season with a slim half-game lead. In other words, if Brinkman’s double had been buried at the bottom of the order and not been able to lead to any runs, Detroit would’ve lost this game— and lost the division title, too.

Yeah?  Well, what’s up with Chris Chelios’s hair on those NHL intermission reports?  Looks like he just crawled out of a sleeping bag under the desk.  We all got issues.

Not targeted at you because it is a legit rumor that he is leaning in that direction but why on earth is Arch Manning even considering Texas...

1. He can literally go anywhere and get whatever NIL money he is looking for

2. Texas hasn't had a good team in 15 years and has shown no ability to develop QBs.  Sark hasn't shown the ability to lift the teams that he has coached.

3. He doesn't have the connections that he does to other schools

4. They have a supposedly all-world QB one class ahead of him (technically two classes ahead of him but really just one)

If he is looking to win, he can go to Bama or Georgia.  If he is looking to be a savior, he can go to Tennessee or Ole Miss.  And if he wants to be the hometown hero, he can go to LSU.

Very odd.  I wonder what the story is there.

But Stroud is projected to go #1 next year. I think the days of osu shitty nfl quarterbackery may be coming to an end in the new gunslinging offense they run, with all these top arms and WRs coming their way. Unless they lure Day away to the NFL. Maybe the Cleveland Roseycheeks? Or the Cincinnati generic-adam-sandlers? Or perhaps the Chicago 100equals27pointsidiots?

And i would happily trade them all the top picks and recruits they want, as long as we beat them into oblivion like last year.

We'll see.  I'm not going to bag on them because clearly they keep producing a ton of talent.  But it's obvious that their receivers have been uber-talented and teams simply don't have the DB depth to cover them.  Their QB's consistently look like world beaters in college but then struggle in the NFL where talent is more evenly distributed

Fair point - but the style has changed. Run and gun doesnt = NFL ready. But, haskins, fields, stroud, ... they are trending that way. A few of these guys will hit, and that will firmly change the narrative. They have some great WRs, but their downfall last year wasnt him agianst us. it was their porous OL and lack of running game

Lincoln riley hit on a couple and it made him god's gift to college fb. He's hit on 3 in the league - u can hate baker, but... still.. he turned the alabama kid into a player who is now a starter and a legit player.

day seems to be doing the same.

i aint happy about it, just seeing what i see

...Haskins, fields, stroud...

Haskins: (R.I.P.) never reached the potential everyone thought he had coming out of college.

Fields: (so far) looks like a giant bust so far.  We shall see what the new coaching staff makes out of him.

Stroud: happy feet and unwilling to take a hit and/or run.  Our Defense showed his true colors, and NFL defenses will feast on his indecision.

k, but they're getting drafted and drafted high. SO lets see...

Option 1: Keep searching the portal for mediocre players, thereby pissing off our QB room. Put nobody in the draft, nobody in the league, and not develop any qb's to an all-B10 level.

Option 2: Put multiple top 10 picks in the league at QB after insane statistics at school where you beat your rival consistently, and are always top 5, with insane speed and quality around you. Then you try the league, get lots of money and have a medium or low probably of turning out great.

The original posted talked about "you chose poorly".. and my point is, sorry, they did not.

I am excited to have JJ and Mcnamara change that narrative, but we don't even have any elite guys coming in behind them yet. So, we are option 1 until something changes.

This isn't shitting on Michigan, nor is it propping up osu - its just a fact of where things are. Look at the ridiculous stats (wins included) for their QBs the past 20 years.

Now look at how those stats have gone from a run/pass mix to 40-50 TDs a season. A SEASON. Fields had a 67-9 TD/INT ratio. Stroud threw for 44 this season. Haskins i think threw for 50!

STOP MAKING ME DEFEND THOSE FUCKERS. But the fact is, years ago, osu and michigan were very similar. THye have gone through multiple evolutions, in the positive way, and we have not. Even as recent as 1.5 years ago, our offense was a complete train wreck.

ugh. please neg me. i hate all the osu platitudes. But my point still holds.

I think you're a little harsh on Stroud at this point. Look at the Michigan game. Hutchinson and Ojabo were chasing him all over the field and he still hit 70% of his passes for 394 yards with no interceptions. I don't think Fields or Haskins really saw that much in the way of pressure while they were in college (and unfortunately certainly not against Michigan).

Sure, he was absolutely throwing to the best group of receivers in the B1G (and possibly all of college football), but Stroud still looked pretty good. For instance, he threw a nice ball to a well-covered Garrett Wilson for a touchdown. Yes, Wilson made a great play on that, but the ball was exactly where it needed to be for him to do that.

I agree that their QBs have been flops in the NFL but most were read-option QBs and were recruited and used by Meyer and Tressel in the previous 20 years before Day who has sent Haskins (RIP), Fields, and Stroud (next year0 to the NFL. Day's QBs are more in tune to the NFL game and keep in mind, Day was a QB coach in the NFL. But it is still early in all of their NFL careers so we'll see how it turns out for Fields and Stroud

And besides, none of this will matter if their new defensive staff doesn't figure out a way to fix those 2020 and 2021 PUTRID OSU defenses. We weren't the only ones that moved the ball against them - everybody did.

The book on Day QBs is that they are accurate when well-protected, so they recruit 1st-round caliber O-linemen to keep them clean and receivers who can get open by five yards and make circus catches when they aren't.

Pressuring them is not easy -- you usually need an Aidan Hutchinson to do that -- but Day's starters so far have seemed awfully vulnerable to getting punched in the mouth.  That doesn't hold up well in the NFL.

I actually think they're doing a pretty savvy job of Moneyballing the QB position; i.e., finding guys who work well in this "we have more athletes than you" system instead of trying to find the next Tom Brady.  So it's just a different variation of Meyer's read-option gimmick.  Despite the drastically different styles, the QBs still thrive because they're surrounded by superstars and wilt in the face of parity.  They just throw now instead of pull.

Very good points about the OSU OL getting punched in the mouth in the last few years which is why they also fired that OL coach - Straw- something - last year (along with all of those defensive coaches. I think Day saw the same thing you did.

Time will tell how all of the OSU coaching changes turn out. They could be better - or worse

Interesting! Of course, the rookie First Rounder QB signing bonus and money is a lot and OSU has been prolific in that regard. That first contract is guaranteed since Troy Smith. Makes sense.

He'll probably end up there but he seems like he becomes smitten with whatever visit he has just taken. He was penciled in at Nebraska due to his uncle working there but that faded after he started taking visits (before actually). He was leaning to a new school out west each week/month, changing with each visit. Then he was certainly going to USC just a month or two ago after a visit there before visiting OSU a couple weeks after USC and suddenly he was all OSU.

NIL could play a factor so he possibly sticks but don't be shocked if he takes a random visit at some point after this and suddenly chooses that new school. I wouldn't count on it but don't be surprised.

Regardless, I've stopped talking about it here as bad news is frowned upon even when it's from the horse's mouth but UM recruiting hasn't been going well since the NFL/Vikings BS. It's actually going quite poorly across the board and players at UM openly shitting on UM's NIL drive isn't helping. Yet, over the last few months a few guys turned down money from other schools to stay here so who knows wtf is going on. Was it matched? Did they just prefer to stay at UM even with less money? Outside of one player I can't say for sure so who knows but football recruiting is not so hot at the moment and college sports essentially has tampering-laden free agency now so it's probably not even safe to care either way until it all gets sorted.

The son of former Detroit Lions center Dominic Raiola. Shocked he didn't choose Wisconsin, they are big fans of their band.

Heck, with a big NFL contract I'd have had a dozen kids. It's a perfect setup. Your wife and nanny raise the kid and do all the dirty work. You get to travel, live your own life, always get to be the fun parent and pass on your DNA. Pretty much perfect.

This staff blows at recruiting. Harbaugh destroyed what could of been a great recruiting cycle.

At least we have a “Michigan Man”

I read the OSU boards and live in Delaware Ohio and see a bunch of OSU info and the Ewers situation is not the same at all. Ewers had a few high-4  and 5-star QBs ahead of him and would have had to wait his turn for at least a couple of years. OSU is not recruiting a high caliber 2023 QB as they will probably use the portal to fill their QB roster.

Both 2022 high 4-star Devin Brown and former 5-star Kyle McCord are sticking around to battle for the 2023 QB position after Stroud leaves for the NFL. That will leave a 2-year gap between Raiola and Brown as OSU wanted this kid very badly and went after him hard not wanting him to look somewhere else with a great 2023 kid. And besides, the portal changes recruiting in a big-time way

You mean JH beating OSU for the first time in 7 years and then looking like he would do anything to get out of here and go to the NFL doesn’t attract elite prospects?  Weird.  Or maybe it’s the sheer lack of QB development under Harbaugh that scares him off.  He must not be impressed by Shea’s pro career.  Maybe it’s the lack of NIL or maybe it’s something more.

Wow. Suggesting that interviewing with one NFL team represents "doing anything to get out of here" seems like a bit of a stretch, doesn't it?

Calm the F down. Harbaugh didn't land the number 1 quarterback recruit last year either. Or the year before that. Or the year before that. Or the year before that. But we did reasonably well without them, no?

I preface what I’m about to say by proclaiming I love Harbaugh as our coach currently. I think he is the best man for the job and there isn’t anyone currently out there who could do better.

That being said, the reality (and what other coaches are certainly whispering in recruits ears) is that Harbaugh is only at Michigan because his preferred jobs never offered him that position. Jim Harbaugh WANTED to be somewhere else other than Michigan. That is objective fact. It gives you pause.  If an NFL team next off season straight up offers him a job does he really turn it down. Recruits have to consider that.

Now, Jim has every right to pursue and take any job he wants, but let’s not be naive and think that this off season wasn’t going to impact recruiting, and possibly impact it significantly.  That’s just not being honest.
