OSU Athletes NIL income

OSU Athlete's earnings from NIL look a lot lower than the numbers we've heard from Texas A&M but looks like OSU is going to build an internal group to help their athletes-

During the first six months of the rules' existence, 220 OSU athletes earned a total of $2.98 million, according data released by Ohio State. The 220 athletes engaged in 608 total NIL activities during those first six months, according to the data.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed an executive order last June allowing athletes to profit off sponsorship deals. Several other states, including Florida and Alabama, also saw similar legislation come into effect around that time period.

Meanwhile, OSU said it is launching a new internal NIL team to “help create and foster best-in-class NIL opportunities for them.”

The NIL Edge Team, as it's been named, will allow OSU staff to interact with brands and will assist student-athletes with “access and resources to successfully pursue NIL opportunities,” according to OSU.

“Our guidelines were initially created to be restrictive, but now that we have a better understanding of NIL, it’s clear that we can provide more assistance in connecting student-athletes with interested brands,” Carey Hoyt, senior associate athletics director for OSU, said in a press release.

Obvious questions, how do we compare in terms of the number of athletes and the amounts AND do we, or will we, have an internal NIL team to help open up and load the "Michigan Money Cannon" we all have heard so much about?  Should be easier now with MS gone.

I don't think Schlissel's departure matters at all. My concern are the influential constituencies within the University community who have no desire except to do things as we always have. You know, huffing about how we are Michigan and we've never done things like this and it undermines standards, etc. Example One (though not pertaining to NIL) is admissions and their refusal to process transfers, effectively making the transfer portal one way only.

I don't think it is a matter of admissions refusing to process transfers, it's that some of an athlete's credits won't transfer to U of M and said athlete would rather go somewhere where all of their credits do transfer.

The "Michigan Money Cannon" is possibly one of the most exaggerated terms I have ever seen on this forum. Nevertheless, I fully grasp why some people like to use it. However, if we have a "money cannon,." Other schools must have got with the times and learned that "money missiles" are far more effective.

Want to load the cannon, take the PSL's and load the Michigan NIL Cannon with a donation to an independent non-profit that signs all players to advertise The University of Michigan.

This is the jumping off point for OSU.  Wealthy alumnus Brian Schottenstein has started. Charitable NIL fund named “The Foundation” which is expected to add significant NIL $$ to OSU athletes.   I’d expect most schools who are serious about NIL to have donors for similar organizations.  The funding has not been announced but there are rumors of fans being able to contribute with a monthly subscription.  As wealthy and connected as the  Schottenstein family is, they will do well regardless of fan contributions.

Meanwhile the NCAA sent a notice of investigation to Oregon for Third Party NIL Deals.  IE Phil Knight organized something similar to what aTm did and others in the sec and now Osu.  Guessing it's a paperwork letterhead issue.  If your letterhead has SEC on it or Osu, they just don't care.  If not, you get the notice in the mail.

I don’t think it’s an SEC/OSU issue, I think it’s going to be in the details. Despite feeling like the wild Wild West, there are a few lines you can’t cross.  If Oregon/Knight didn’t cross the line of pay to play, nothing will come of it.  OSU has been held back by an aggressive compliance officer regarding NIL.  If they are announcing and school based committee (separate from Schottenstein), I’m guessing every school in the country follows suit.

So A&M coordinated NIL Partners to targeted recruits and that isn't a NCAA Violation?  Please, they stated it, their NIL Partners stated it.  Jimbo Fischer Stated it.  According to the NCAA you cannot do this and yet they ignore A&M and other schools while all SEC and OSU are doing it but Oregon.. Phil Knight.. please.  It isn't a matter of how you cross your T's and dotting the I's.  it's a pure power control move to investigate one university for Third Party NIL Deals involving Boosters and not others.

Think of it this way, without the snark.  OSU’s compliance office refused to allow any input from any school employee on NIL deals.   That simply can’t happen.  Every school has its big $ donors.  Closer to home, how are the donors going to know who to point the UM money cannon at without input from the staff?  Are they going to go to the Under Armour All American game and offer a recruit a NIL deal without Harbaugh’s approval?  No, they need to know who JH wants and then offer the deal.

Honestly this is probably something we need to be doing. Probably not going to be A&M style/money, but we defintely bring value as a fanbase and institution that can be utilized much better.

I would guess those numbers are heavily understating the real NIL earnings of football players at OSU. It's probably taking local Columbus business accountants a lot of time shifting payments to student-athletes from their "unofficial books" to their official P&L statements...

Would it be legal to make a fan sponsored slush fund that pays current team members  to do appearances during the off-season. Thinking something like a spring tailgate or summer autograph signings. For example if a fan site or some equivalent were to be the brand and to promote that brand, they host various events where certain players  come to a meet and greet/autograph sessions/q&a for an appearance fee, would that be within the rules (fyi deleted “within the spirit of the rules, because the “spirit of the rules” is what is killing us). My feeling is that whoever is doing this could sell different levels of tickets and could also take contributions from people to raise the funds. Obviously the business that doing the leg work would take a management fee for managing the money, as well as a cut of all the proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales.

I'm assuming this is why Brian stayed in Florida after the Orange Bowl. Hopefully he was talking to Stephen Ross about how to leverage MGoBlog as the centralized funneling house for all of the big & small donors to pay athletes for doing posts about their experience at UM and potentially some meet and great events if needed (off-season of course).

Clearly the A&M difference was organization. OSU just put out a press release saying they were going to get organized. Apparently Michigan's law states the University of Michigan can't be directly involved in helping athletes obtain NIL.

Michigan just needs some entity, like a blog which reaches 100,000's, as a legit platform for people to give their money so that money can be given to get amazing content and potentially player access.

Not sure if others have seen this, but this was news to me.

Look at the following Opendorse app that OSU is calling THE Platform.

https://ohiostatebuckeyes.com/the-platform/#:~:text=Ohio%20State%20Launches%20THE%20Platform,Image%20and%20Likeness%20(NIL).

I see that at least 6 Big Ten schools are using this software to help their student athletes.

Hopefully, we've got something similar in the works.

As far as I know, MGoBlog, has only asked for money for T-shirts and for their annual Football preview magazine.

I propose that Brian, Seth (et al) does a kickstarter to raise money to support an MGoBlog sponsored UM Football and/or Basketball Student Athlete of the Year. This could raise the awareness of this great blog.  The Mods could pick the athlete or do a vote of selected athletes.

Let's put our collective "MGoBlog Money Pistol" to good use.
