in the CC search one must surmise that JH has given them every indication he is seriously interested in the MIchigan job. Both Miles and Mullen's have indicated they have not been contacted. Not sure whether Mora has been contacted.

Let's hope Hackett and company know what they are doing.

Hackett has acknowledged hiring a search firm, of creating a list of candidates and of narrowing down that list. Doing so without contacting candidates is virtually impossible. Being more open about the search than that could easily be counter productive. Relying on sitting head coaches for accurate information about our search is not wise.

Or...the first option is dicking us around.

I choose to not believe that so am optimistic about Harbaugh being our next coach.  With each day of silence it becomes more and more likely; if the answer is ultimately "no" Harbaugh knows he cannot waste Michigan's time.

This is a legacy moment regardless of decision.  He will not screw us by setting up a Herbstreit again.

and  that Miles or Mullen agents were not contacted. I wonder if Michigan has a no SEC coach policy? I hope not but I fear the worse if Harbaugh ends up saying no once again!

that he will coach the playoff games.  On the one hand, who knows if he will ever get that chance again.  On the other hand, if Ohio somehow beats Bama that would theoretically put him way behind in the recruiting cycle for Houston's 2015 class (no idea what the circumstances are with the Houston program - so that may not matter much).

this "dead period" thing is way overplayed.  coaches can still call/email/text recruits all they want during this time.  i.e. it's still a valuable time for recruiting.

Besides JH, is there another established coach would come not knowing who they'd be working for? This assumes only JH has the opportunity to apart of the new AD hiring.

Totally unrelated but not worthy of a thread - Foley just hired Dan Mullen's DC.  Now I am sure McElwain had a hand in this but how much does Foley hate Mullen?   Totally ignore him during a search for a new coach, allegedly say negative things to Hackett about him, then go and steal his DC.  Damn...that's cold bro.

Get Jim Harbaugh

December 16th, 2014 at 2:06 PM ^

I was perusing 11W* earlier and their fans never cease to amaze me. I saw many comments like, "I'm not afraid of Harbaugh at Michigan" or "Even with Harbaugh, it will be YEARS before they even come close to beating OSU and MSU." You know, shit like that. Granted, some of those inbreds are worried if Harbaugh comes, but it's a good worry.

Some actually want Michigan to be good again because it's better for the rivalry, which is true. Some said that there isn't nearly enough talent in Ann Arbor to compete, but then others rebutted and said there is quite a large amount of good talent, but the players have just lacked good coaching to develop said talent, which is also true.

*I go there every now and then. I'm talking maybe once a month for about five to ten minutes, just checking their forum section since that's the second largest Michigan blog on the Googles and Internets.

I dunno man, if we had beaten them in 9 of the last 10, I wouldn't be feeling all that threatened either, regardless of coach.  They have a coach that is unquestionably in the top 2 or 3 in the country and are recruiting like gangbusters.  I'd say they have good reason to be feeling pretty good right now.

Obviously, we'll likely get much better if we get Harbaugh, but it's not like they should be terrified that they suddenly won't be able to keep up.

Does it say anything about his buy-out in there (I didn't see anything)? Wouldn't it be funny if we ended up poaching a coach who had never actually stepped foot on campus at his "current employer"?

As a Houstonian I like this move. Houston is a place where a young coach can hone his skills with decent talent and then move on up the food chain. In the meantime I get to see some decent college football locally for the next few years on the cheap.

I think it is a perfect first job. Houston is a decent mid-major program in a talent rich state.

Michigan's coaching search remains a mystery. All I ask for is no Schiano or some other less than ideal candidate...

Baseless speculation:

Tom Herman was made aware that Michigan might pursue him as a Plan B option. After hearing this, he called Jim Harbaugh and asked him if he was going to come back to Michigan. Jim Harbaugh told him yes, that is why he took the Houston job now.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I've never understood why some consider Herman to be a real plan B option, when he's never been a head coach.  He may be a bright mind, but without head coaching experience, it's just too risky, especially for us and our situation.

Just as in real life, where you can't replicate experience, I would rather have someone who has been through the ups and downs of being a head coach.  This includes Schiano.  Even considering Herman kind of reeks of desperation, like we're just trying to take something away from OSU.
