Open practice reaction thread

Submitted by go16blue on

It won't be over for a few hours still, but I figured I may as well start this thread now. I'm there currently. It's tough to take much from a practice like this, but I can give an impression of the depth chart. Sorry for the disorganization.

Rudock at QB, Smith at RB, Harris/Perry/Chesson at WR (haven't seen much Darboh now that I think of it). Line is as it was reported previously. LBs were solidly Ross/Bolden/Morgan (now wearing #3), and CBs saw a lot of LewisClark (thanks Qmatic), Stribling, and a couple others. Hill and Wilson played with the 1s at S, and of course Jabril played every snap. Butt obviously started at TE. Isaac was first off the bench at RB, Morris at QB. I'll try to update with further impressions as possible. I'd love to see other attendees corroborate the above, and add more details. They came down on phones pretty hard so this is all from memory.

This is evidence of what this blog has become for everyone, now that we have embedded reporting at student-only practices such as this one, and indeed, apparently a practice where there were some rules regarding phones. Nice work indeed on getting this out there - now we wait for other perspectives to start flowing in as people get home.

I'd go find you the clip of Peppers from this summer talking about how they working on playing 3 safeties...

He was speaking specifically about Greg Jackson and trying to get more guys on the field. It was pretty telling stuff.

And it allows them to have flexibility versus any type of offense, makes perfect sense. Teams like OSU that want to spread you out and run the ball have trouble against sets with DBs who can tackle and cover the additional WR.

BTN said he throws the best long ball and is best on the short routes...but he needs to improve the intermediate stuff.

But that's BTN, DiNardo and co.

So the smallest grain of salt.

Most likely of the "walking wounded" variety (or boo boo, if you prefer). Season enders and long term injuries usually take a guy out of practice completely. One can hope anyway.

I was one of the lucky 200 hundred students who got there early enough to grab a spot down on the field. A few of my observations (although I will add that with my position it was hard too see everything clearly): Seemed like Ruddock and Morris took a majority of the "game simulation" snaps, Ruddock looked a little more polished than Morris. However I really liked Morris' swagger coming out and doing the drills. He acted like a starting quarterback. But the offense seemed to run smoother under Ruddock. Got to see Wilson Speight in action, I thought he looked good, but not as polished as the others. Speight and Gentry are really tall, I had to do a double check a number of times. Feels like they should be playing power forward, not quarterback. I liked Gentry's composure during drills, he seems like a guy who's going to have a high ceiling. Didn't see Malzone during the "game simulation", although I thought I saw him holding the ball during field goals.(Not 100% sure) No pictures were allowed, they made it clear you'd be kicked out. They were still yelling at people after practiced ended. A personal note, I almost got run over when one of Ruddock's passes went sailing through the corner of the endzone. Also got to see Harbaugh with a headset on, and there was a ton of khaki shorts worn by the staff. Many of us were commenting on the sudden uptrend in fashion. Sorry I don't have more detail, I did see a couple of students who had a notepad and binoculars, they came prepared, so hopefully they post here.

Yo I was there class of 19 representin. Looking so fly they didn't know we was freshmen. Rudock got the start and chewed up all the starting reps. He was consistently solid and showed he was a vet. Sorry to all his fans but Morris did not look good. He didn't make some throws that a starter really should. He almost made a huge play a couple of times. The potentials definitely there. It shines. The running backs? Kinda ho hum. But the lack of big plays made me feel glum. By there was one thing from which I couldn't take my eyes. It was jourdan Lewis on the sidelines. Don't get me wrong he was fully dressed. Was he walking with a limp? My eyes tell me yes But it wasn't that noticeable, I could be wrong. Maybe I was expecting him to limp along. Anyway that's about all the typing i can handle. Peace and love- ya boy randle.
