Open practice reaction thread

Submitted by go16blue on

It won't be over for a few hours still, but I figured I may as well start this thread now. I'm there currently. It's tough to take much from a practice like this, but I can give an impression of the depth chart. Sorry for the disorganization.

Rudock at QB, Smith at RB, Harris/Perry/Chesson at WR (haven't seen much Darboh now that I think of it). Line is as it was reported previously. LBs were solidly Ross/Bolden/Morgan (now wearing #3), and CBs saw a lot of LewisClark (thanks Qmatic), Stribling, and a couple others. Hill and Wilson played with the 1s at S, and of course Jabril played every snap. Butt obviously started at TE. Isaac was first off the bench at RB, Morris at QB. I'll try to update with further impressions as possible. I'd love to see other attendees corroborate the above, and add more details. They came down on phones pretty hard so this is all from memory.

Hoke's QB management was obviously terrible but 2012 was also somehow just an absolutely terrible year for QBs. Other than Jameis no one that I can think of from that year has really made a major impact anywhere. Where you thinking of Maty Mauk as the QB we passed? He actually may be one of the best QBs from that group so far.

I seriously doubt Harbaugh is going to start Morris just so he doesn't get mad and be embarrassed. That line of thinking is the whole problem with this program. He's had three years to win this job. Had a head start on the offense and if he can't beat Rudock out then that's that. There's. no" it's my turn to be the QB so I should automatically be it."Give me a break. Sorry that is just ridiculous.

And that's why I said...if Rudock is .01% better, he's going to start, period. Harbaugh doesn't give a fuck about ego, promises, sensitivity or entitlement - his fucks are reserved for "best chance to win" and that's it.

Agreed! Shane seems like a really good kid who wants to win and works his butt off, but there are no "participation trophies" with Harbaugh. Can you get the job done or not? Period. End of story. Shane hasn't shown much in the somewhat limited time playing that would tell the fanbase, players, or coaching staff that he can move the ball downfield, throw the ball with touch, and limit turnovers.

1.  I would SOOO take a "B" from our offensive line after the last couple years, and

2. No good coach should start someone to appease their ego.  If Morris needs that, he is not right for the job.  Search history on Brady, Tom.  That's how he should handle it.

It was "insider" info...but now that people have seen it with their own eyes, it's no secret.

It's looking like Rudock has won the job and multiple people (we trust - Scout/247/etc) have reported this or saying they'd be "SHOCKED" if Rudock wasn't the starter.

From the sound of it, the report above is accurate in that Morris started ahead of Jake, but got better as he got more familiar, Shane started pressing and turning the ball over and for the past week or so, it's been Rudock with the 1's and Morris with the 2's.

I think this is one of those paywall nuggets that can be shared now that people have seen it (similar to Brian's post early last week).

I'm not surprised either. Rudock has a good head on his shoulders. Watching him speak to the media in interviews, he is very good with his words and seems pretty intelligent. Also it helps that he's had more time playing as a B1G QB. Plain and simple, he wasn't coming to Michigan to just ride the pine.

Really small sample size obviously, but I'd say yes. In previous years you'd just see the RBs smash into the LOS again and again and say "hopefully we just have a really good DL" - this was not that. There were holes, and some decent runs at times. Even some space for the RBs to make a couple of moves. Nothing huge that I remember, but it was promising for me.

Rudock also looked pretty good. WRs looked better than the spring game at least, where they had zero separation. I'm hopeful that the lineup today sticks there, as it has the most potential.

Also on the kickers, both were inconsistent but I didn't notice that either had a distinct limit on their kicking range, at least. We probably won't be looking at another Gibbons/Wile situation, that is.

That's all I got on analysis. Grain of salt, etc etc.

based on the reports I have seen and heard, But Sam Webb did say something about the possibility of a kicker in the 2016 class if the coaches don't see improvement.  Perhaps more importantly Sam was suspiciously non-comittal when asked if M could get back in on Quinn Nordin if needed. -- I took it to mean he is ours if we want him/have room for him.

Agree with what was stated above. Nobody "wowed" you when they were running the ball, but I don't think getting consistent gains and avoiding the no gains or losses will be that hard to do with their current personnel. It's going to be a work in progress obviously and I doubt the running attack will ever be great, but I think it could be decent to solid.
