Oliver Martin Isn't Going Anywhere

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on June 3rd, 2019 at 9:52 AM

There were rumors aplenty last week that Oliver Martin was looking to enter the portal, so Sam Webb made some calls - including to Oliver's family - and it turns out that Oliver will be back on the Michigan football team this fall. Per Sam this morning, "Unless something happens and he does a complete 180, he's not going anywhere."

The “rumors” stemmed from Yoder, so everyone should have known from the first moment that it was all BS.

If “Oliver Martin isn’t going anywhere”, then has he been locked in his room? Taking only online courses?  How will he get to training sessions, football practice and games?

That's good. I still think he can be very good. Hes just taking a little more time to adjust than the other wrs in his class

Unfortunately there will always be frauds like Yoder as long as there are enough extremely online and extremely concerned fans to make that schtick a profitable endeavor.

The Twitter/message board megaphone for "I saw a tweet that said maybe a bad thing has happened or will happen!" is what makes it a thing the program has to deal with.

Let's do better (we probably won't do better).

I was surprised that the first several posts in this thread didn't mention the name of the tool who started this whole rumor.

This rumor was announced by James Yoder and there is plenty of yack yack on the Iowa websites about it. Fake news-get used to it because its the norm now unfortunately.

The fact this "rumor" entirely originated from Yoder at Shat Sports, should have negated this thread entirely.  But I'll play along.

I saw this rumor.  It's amazing how much amplification "fake news" can get in the internet age.

We're going to be stacked at WR next year.  With DPJ, NC, TB and OM as Juniors/RS Soph and then Ronnie Bell and Mike Sainristil peppered in.   I'm excited about the Sainristil hype, but I don't think we've seen the best out of any of these guys yet.  I hope Gattis completely airs it out.  Open up the run with the pass.    While it was manball I really miss the Braylon, Howard/Alexander, and AC days where the passing game was reliable.   Even though Denard got a ton more passing yards, it was always a fingers crossed situation when you truly needed it.  Last couple of years the offense has been anemic.

Sam stated Martin arrived late on campus (reason not specified), only arriving recently then had a meeting with the coaches.

My guess is perhaps Martin was considering leaving but has changed his mind (obviously). I would think if he can stick it out one more season, he'll be in the top 3 rotation next season. That's probably more attractive then starting out new somewhere else.

I'm not sure how many snaps he'll get this year with DPJ, Black, & Collins healthy, but I'm sure at least one of them will enter the draft after the 2019 season at which point we'll need him.  He'll also be important for depth in case of injury.

With as many injuries as our WR group has had the past couple of years, and with the change in offensive philosophy, I wouldn't be surprised if Oliver Martin had close to as many catches this next season as the top group of pass catchers did last season at the very least. The top 5 Alabama receivers all caught over 40 balls last year whereas DPJ was the only receiver at Michigan to catch over 40 (47).

He redshirted his freshman year in 2017, so he has three years of eligibility remaining including 2019. In 2018, he was handicapped by playing in an offense that threw the ball fewer times during the regular season—324—than every BIG team except MD and WI. That is going to change in 2019—Gattis didn't come here to run an offense that was as heavily run-oriented as we were in 2018.

Dammit that makes my blood pressure rise...  You have a 5 star QB and the best set of receivers around and you do that??  Gah!!

Definitely would be an odd time to leave with the new system going into place looking to get more touches around the board. That also opens up more opportunities further down the chart, especially if, knock on wood, injuries occur. Bummer that these rumors get legs so quickly these days.

So it sounds like there might have been some wavering and doubts, leaving Oliver's football fate twisting in the wind, but that ultimately he.... connnnnnsiders himself...at home, connnnnnsiders himself....one of the family..... connnnnnsiders himself....part of the furniture....and that we've taken to him... So strong....it's clear....we're.....going to get along....connnnnnsider yourself....one of us!
