Ojabo injury: it's the Achilles
Tweet from Ojabo:
Fuck, that really sucks. Luckily, achilles recovery has come a long way in recent years. Still brutal though.
I ruptured both of my Achilles - one when I was 20 at UM (IM Basketball) and the other at 30 (flag football in Central Park). Recovery was slow back then, but with professional sports supervision it is much better now. If it was a complete rupture then I think he might lose a step... a partial rupture can be close to 100% healed.
He's a really good kid so we all are pulling for him.
Mother of god this is terrible news - he could fall, what outside the top 5 rounds now? Anybody have any insight into how this could affect his stock? Jesus H.
Sidney Jones is a good comparison. He dropped about a round.
Given it's March he will probably miss the season depending on the grade of the tear or rupture, and will probably drop considerably if that is what he has. Recovery is a long process based off my experience of achilles troubles. Given the physical demands placed on NFL players, this is not good for him.

Terrible injury; seems most of them happen during a non-football play situation. Hope he recovers and is able to make a pro team.

Dayo Odeyingbo went round 2 last year and he was a worse prospect, he'll be a day 2 pick now.
Come back better than ever, DO!
What an amazing attitude. The news is about as bad as it could be and he appears to be remaining positive. An incredible young man. Hopefully it’s not ruptured.
Worst possible news
Even worse than an ACL
Wishing you well, David.
Awful news.
Hopefully, Ojabo will have a full and complete recovery.
Damn that’s awful as he seems like a really good dude. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

O-JA-BO
Wish him the best in recovery. Achilles is tough news.
I love his attitude. Every day counts.
is it possible for him to 'undeclare', rehab, play for us this season and have a 'do over' next spring? complete recovery can take a year though. hard providence no matter what happens.
Even if he could undeclare, so to speak, there's no way an Achilles rupture in March would be healthy and ready for early fall.
Plus, if he got injured again, his NFL prospects would take nose dive.
He'd be inspirational is he could train with the team though

Cam Akers would like a word.

More seriously, Ojabo is probably out at least 9-12 months, so MAYBE could resume playing in the playoffs. Cam Akers recovery is absolutely freakish and not the norm.

Oh man, that's tough. Does it make sense to get drafted later now? Or train and try next year to get picked high again. Such awful timing. Hope he takes the time to get it fully healthy
This basically gives the Lions the opportunity to draft both Hutchinson and Ojabo. Things are falling the Lions way for a change.

An Achilles injury is bad enough. You want him to be drafted by the Lions too? That is cold.

As bad as the Lions have been for well...60 years there does seem to be some positivity and a good culture being built whereas from the first game under Patricia you knew it was going to be a multi year diaster. Holmes has already made some pretty decent picks and signings.

We know how that ends.
Wishing him a full and expeditious recovery, and I am sure we will see him on Sundays all the same at some point. He's far too awesome a player not to be seen on Sundays.
Elephant in the room: Degree of injury. It's partly baseless speculation until that's known.
Yeah, but a non-contact injury with someone going down in a heap grabbing their ankle…in this case the Achilles looks, walks, and sounds like a duck…
My upvote of this OP is for David's tweet, not the injury (probably obvious, but worth mentioning...).
This is shitty news for the man, just horrible. I'd rather he'd have broken a bone... But medical science is awesome, so hopefully he'll fully recover quickly and get back at it for next year. I hope teams understand this better than we do, and he doesn't drop too far.
Also crappy news to start this day of Michigan sports... Today, we have mens and womens bball, hockey, and I believe some wrastlin' still going on. Probably some lacrosse, baseball, and softball, too, if you look close enough!
Tough break for the kid
Here is to a speedy recovery. Hoping he still gets drafted at least early on in day 2, worse case
March 19th, 2022 at 10:15 AM ^
Prob costs him a round or two. Still not the death sentence injury it used to be for sports - look at Kevin Durant for example.

Tough break for him but still sounds like NFL teams think highly of him and ACL recovery is far better than in years past.
Probably lose a round or two but will hopefully get a year to recover and come back strong.

This is probably another injury from turf. It's an unnatural surface for sports, especially with so much force generated from someone with legs as strong as Ojabo's. Being pro day, his adrenaline was probably peg out, he probably wanted to have his best explosion off the line. I don't know what exercise strengthen the achilles. It's a weak link.
I hope he still gets drafted high.

There are multiple studies that show turf increases knee injuries. Wonder how long it will continue to be a thing.

If the Lions accept that they are still in rebuild mode (and I believe they do accept that), AND if they take Hamilton at #2, then they should take Ojabo at 32 or 34. Let him heal, and then unleash him in ‘23.
March 19th, 2022 at 12:06 PM ^
Ojabo may drop all the way to day 3 after this. His value was directly tied with him being a raw, incredibly quick prospect.
March 19th, 2022 at 12:36 PM ^
This is horrible, going to cost him millions
Ooof. I recently(ish) tore my Achilles, had surgery, and 1 year of rehab.
Good news is that if you follow all the rehab to a T, which of course he will, the tendon is way stronger in the end.
Fuck.
Read he will likely make a full recovery in six months. If true that is great news and not a full rupture. May or may not affect his draft position! Hopefully he’s a first round pick!!! No matter what, he is going to be fine just a bump in the road!
