Ohio's Defense

Submitted by orobs on

In the last two weeks, they have given up 87 points, and a hair under 1000 yards.  Is this defense regressing under Urban?

Yeah, I think Fickell is in the hot seat.  Meyer said last night that Meyer needs to get "more involved" with the defense and "find out" what's going wrong.  I can't imagine that bodes well for Fickell's continued employment.  On the one hand, I feel bad for Fickell - he fell on a grenade for Ohio State last season and I would like to see him leave on his own terms, preferably to go be a head coach somewhere.  On the other hand, 49 points to F***ING INDIANA?!?

I am sure they have some LB depth problems. OSU has always depended on their LB's to be in the right position to make big plays. They need to get their LB's healthy before they play at Penn State and Wisky or they won't be able to even win their division this year.

To be fair, 7 of Indiana's points came on a pick-6.   Regardless, 42 points to Indiana is still unacceptable.  There need to be some serious improvements on that side of the ball soon or else Urban needs to clean house this winter.

Um, no.  Did you watch the game?  All 49 points came from the IU offense.  The only INT thrown was in the endzone for a touchback.  Although you could argue about the short field given to IU do to a punt block, OSU was the one that got a non-offensive TD with their punt block into the endzone.

Clearly too many players are getting their priorities wrong and have been devoting their time and energies to skool and not football. They forget they "ain't there to play skool, but football." No doubt this will be a teaching point this week.

They just won a shoot out against Indiana with an offense that relies far too much on the performance of their extremely athletic dual threat QB saddled with a defense that struggles with the fundamentals. Next you'll be telling me that they hired a new hot shot head coach known for his high powered spread offensive schemes.

OSU's defense has looked bad this year.  But I never expected Indiana to score 49 points on them.

Indiana State's defense held the Hoosiers to 24 points.  Northwestern's crappy defense held the Hoosiers to 29 points.  But OSU gives up 49 to them.  Impressive.

For all of last season, the Buckeye pass defense allowed teams to go 214 for 352 for 2,366 total yards, which amounts to an average of 182 yards per game, 6.7 yards per attempt and 11.0 yards per completion. This was 4th in the conference. Last year's rushing defense in Columbus allowed 479 carries for 1,840 yards, good for 3.8 yards per attempt and 5th in the Big Ten.

After six games (i.e., excluding today's performance for the moment), the passing defense has allowed teams to be 164 for 246 for 1,592 yards already, good for 265 yards per game on average and 11th in the Big Ten. The rushing defense has not lost a lot of ground really, for after six games, they have allowed 181 carries for 727 yards, which is 3.9 yards per carry and currently 6th in the conference.

Of course, once tonight's stats are officially added, some of this may change. Indiana managed to get 352 yards in the air and 129 on the ground, after all.

FWIW, Indiana won't go to a bowl or anything but they're a legit team this year. They've been a lot more competitive than one would expect, especially after losing their starting QB for the year.

But then, 49 points?

I don't think a team that doesn't go to a bowl can be "legit" in this day and age of 6-6 bowl teams who can play MAC teams, a service academy and Indiana State in the non-conference.

They will probably be favored in a single Big Ten game, over the steaming pile of crap that is  Illinois.  1-7 in conference is not a legit team, even if they are a little feisty.

When I saw the Ohio score, I was thinking the same thing as the OP: sorta.  Instead, though, I just decided to believe that Ohio does have the one "fatal flaw" that can keep them from going undefeated after all.

OSU's defense is clearly not as good this year. However, you have to wonder if Indiana is not a little better than we are used too. They did give MSU a run as well.

What is this Ohio defense you speak of? Seriously, I thought the D was going to hold it down during the offensive transition. Fickell should be more concerned with the fundamentals instead of mouthy pizza workers.

Yes.  In 1988, (John Cooper's first season) Indiana beat OSU 41-7.  Before today, that was the most points they had ever scored on the bucks.

The previous year, IU beat OSU at the shoe 31-10.

IU scored 31 against OSU in 1989 as well in a 35-31 loss.  Those were three highest scoring games for them.

After the IU loss Earl Bruce called it something like the "darkest day in Ohio State history".  He was told he would be fired the Monday before the Michigan game after 3 straight losses to Iowa, Wisconsin and MSU.  His players rallied around him and the snuck out of  AA with a pretty improbable win.....although Michigan wasn't that great that year either.

The actual game that decided the Big Ten title that year was Indiana at MSU on Nov 14, State won going away 27-3.  I remember because I was there and it was damn cold and I wasn't dressed properly.

State's D that year gave up something like 4 TD's in Big Ten play.  The win over IU clinched the Rose Bowl trip, the following weeks win over hapless Wisconsin gave MSU its first outright Big Ten title in like 21 years or something.  Which I believe is now their only outright title in over 45 years.

1987 game was also the last time and only time since the 1960's that Michigan lost to Indiana, 14-10 down in Bloomington.  The game was played in a steady rain that turned to a driving rain and when the teams switched sides to start the 4th quarter the wind changed directions back into Michigan's face.  I believe Frank Beckmen still believes it was some of the worst weather he's ever seen Michigan play in.
