Nussmeier looks to be going to Florida

Submitted by Moe on

Not a huge surprise, as the new coach will probably look for a different OC (I heard ole #6 for Michigan is a strong candidate).  I wish him well in the future.

Michigan offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier is expected to be named to the same position at Florida per a source. http://t.co/buD3jvvmVs

Yes, this may be very good news:  it may well mean Nuss got the vibe an offensive-minded HC is coming to Michigan.  In which case, his services are unlikely to be required.

In which case, Nuss may not think it's Mora or Schiano.  Which would be encouraging.

And so you see, that's how logic works when you're desperate for Harbaugh:  Occam is no longer relevant.

there's a shot with Roman, but Fangio is not coming here. Other than his one year at Stanford, he has never coached in college... he wound up at Stanford after flaming out with the expansion Texans and now he will have plenty of pro offers. Roman had a similar background but his offenses are not nearly as well regarded as Fangio's Ds.

I'd be fine with how the defense has looked and progressed under Mattison were he to stay. We're were decent last year and should be even more talented/experienced/improved next year and would expect good things, especially aided by an offense returning everyone to the line and expected to be much improved, at least not regularly turning the ball over, under (theoretically) Harbaugh.

better given more time, but the fact is he was put in a real no-win situation and he never had the influence or the connection with Devin Gardner to make their brief relationship work and marry the offense he apparently ran, which seemed stilted and unimaginative most of the time.

An OC doesn't have to be creative but if he is the offensive designer and playcaller, he needs to run stuff that puts his team in the best position to win. I got the feeling that Michigan's offense was designed to ensure the defense caught a break on the sideline before going back in.

There have been many here wanting this guy retained even under Harbaugh, but to me Borges was the more creative OC. Yeah, he was quirky and unwilling to fully commit himself to an offense that fit Michigan's qb, but he was imaginative

I would rather have Captain Comeback direct the Michigan offense and find his own playcaller. Nussmeir would probably work with Harbaugh and it might have made for an interesting partnership,

I just like Jim's desire to win on every down, not just third down. And I trust him to find a way to get things done. He is all about winning. And doing it the right way.

Personally, I think Gardner's shocking regression proves that Nussmeier was a collossal disappointment. Gardner put up some epic performances under Borges (ND 2013, Ohio State 2013), but he came nowhere close to replicating them under Nussmeier despite better O-line play. Looking back, I don't think his departure from Alabama was entirely voluntary.

Yeah, that's tough. Money doesn't make up for everything. Let's be fair--it's good that Nuss gets a soft landing. He jumped onto a sinking ship, and even with all of the struggles produced real growth on the OL for the first time in a couple of years. It is impossible to tell how much incompetence comes from him and how much comes from his superiors. We know a lot of it came from the top.

I was very excited when he got hired.  Hard to blame much on him this year.

He had one hand tied behind his back because DG was broken.  Running game was not very good until THE DRAKE ( against decent competition at least) and OL took time to gel.

However, this is third job in 3 years so that does say something too.

Overall, I think M will miss him.  Just my two cents.

It was one year. A very bad one, yes, but still one data point. Pretty much everywhere he's gone he's had success so it's not just Alabama's insane talent that got him these two jobs. I wish him luck and hope he does well. Would love to see the apprentices defeat the master.

A year is a bit more than a data point. The offense regressed under Nuss and frankly, we'd have been better off if we had kept Borges. Imagine 2013 offensive results upgraded for the maturing of the players along with continuity. It would have far surpassed what we ended up with in 2014.

Looking back on some of those 2013 performances like Notre Dame, Minnesota, Penn State, Indiana, and Ohio, Borges looks like a miracle worker.

Yikes. Florida fans were pretty disappointed over the McElwain hire. Just wait until they look up Nuss and see how our offense performed last season.

Cant think of a coordinator in the past 20 years who has had as little impact one way or the other.  Not saying that as a negative although this year's results stunk and for a QB guru he appearred to go 0 for 3 based on what we saw vs Minnesota but he was here such a short time there was little to no real impact on the trajectory of the program or these players.  Hope he does well there except for that game in 2017.  I have zero emotional connection to this guy as he seemed quite guarded in terms of press exposure.  What's his lasting legacy? A celebration for a TD when we were down 20 vs MSU.

Now this does set up for an interesting scenario if Florida can match up with Alabama in the future in a SEC CG.  Lane K and Saban vs the prior 2 Lane Ks!

Sustained or improved upon the results from the previous year, and then continued that for the next few seasons.  Was it really too much to ask that Nussmeier sustain or improve upon the results from 2013?  Just  eleven short months ago that is exactly what everyone knew he would do.

to OC without previous OC experience?  I wouldn't think so.  It would make far more sense that Greg Roman would follow Jimmy.  Ole #6 might be hired to be part of the staff, but not as the OC.
