The Number 88 Jersey
I just saw that Brandon Moore tweeted that he is now #89, switching from #88. "I am officially number 89 now...".
I didn't think much of it, but then I remembered the passing of Jim Mandich last night, another #88. I wonder if these means there will be something special done to honor Mandich's number. From other discussions I've seen on here, retirement of a number seems unlikely (unless it's 21, for obvious reasons or 2, again obvious). Perhaps a one year "temporary" retirement of the number?
This may just be a coincidence, but I was curious if anyone else has heard any speculation about this or if there is precedent for such a memorial.

perhaps he and Roh will be special teaming together, like on punt team?

Ah, that's a good point. That caused the problems with Avery and Odoms last year correct? They got a penalty for both being on the field at the same time if I remember correctly.

...the thread. See my comment below.

You forgot 11, 47, 48, 87 and old 98.
Edit: Nevermind. You're talking about future retired numbers.

I don't see his number being retired but I hope we have a moment of silence for Jim and Vada before the Western game.

They should be right above the bottom edge of the back of the helmet on either side of the outside stripes.

Unless we're already having helmet stickers.. *gasp!* any word about those?

Maybe he wants to be just like Tyler Ecker.
Which would be excellent for Nebraska.

for him to lateral to Breaston

Thanks for opening that wound.
PITCH THE BALL OMG HE'S RIGHT NEXT TO YOU AND HE'S STEVE BREASTON AND YOU'RE TYLER ECKER.

that my soon-to-be in-laws pulled my wife aside and said "He's sober? And acting like that? What is WRONG with him!?"

I think that any MGoBoarder had the exact same reaction... most likely eliciting many such comments.
and I have a Michigan football problem...

The only thing worse then having to play in an Alamo Bowl is being proud to have won one. That game was WAC officials that were so clueless-perhaps the worst officiated game ever. None the less Nebraska's QB that game took hit after hit and was gutsy.
Bizzare game-let the sker's have an Alamo Bowl trophy.
April 27th, 2011 at 11:36 AM ^
I didn't think they were WAC officials. I thought they were from the Sun Belt or Conference-USA or something.
April 27th, 2011 at 11:44 AM ^
They were Sunbelt. That fact is burned into my brain.
I second this. Despite all the hullabaloo around the final play, Im still angrier about the non call on the pass interference that actually HIT our receiver (Breaston?) in the chest on the 5, but he couldn't catch it because his arm was literally held behind his back. What an accurate throw!
I remember Kirk Herbstreit, after yet another poor call, chuckling in disbelief and just saying "Sun Belt."

/Runs back the mental tape
DIE YOU STUPID SUN BELT BASTARDS DIEEEEEEEEEEE...
Yep, they were Sun Belt.
I meant to say those Sun Belt ref's were WACK! My bad!

That's what she said.
just when I had totally forgot about that shit hole of a game!

Maybe TE C. Barnett asked for it and Moore agreed to change?
(No idea what number Barnett was in H.S. - but if it was 88 maybe this is it. Either way we'll find out in early August when freshman numbers come out)
April 27th, 2011 at 11:08 AM ^
I highly doubt that an incoming Freshman, who most of the current players don't know, would go out of his way to request that another player give up his number considering he has yet to put on the winged helmet...just sayin
April 27th, 2011 at 11:15 AM ^
If he wore 88 in high school, and if Moore hosted Barnett on his visits (same position group so it's likely), and if they have remained friends I could easily see it.
No different than a pro rookie coming into the league and asking a veteran for a specific number - happens all the time.
Either way, it was just a guess (not the answer) as to why Moore may have changed numbers
April 27th, 2011 at 11:17 AM ^
I haven't heard of many pros doing that for a rookie. At least not without some sort of compensation.
And I think it would probably be illegal for Brandon Moore to take $25,000 from Chris Barnett to get the #88.
Also, Chris Barnett was #14 in high school.
April 27th, 2011 at 11:31 AM ^
Koger and Roundtree have asked him why he switched, we'll get an answer
April 27th, 2011 at 11:40 AM ^
...special teams.
Man, that would have been a killer to all the Death Roh shirts out there if the coin flipped half a turn more.
April 27th, 2011 at 11:45 AM ^
Maybe he's just allergic to palindromes.
April 27th, 2011 at 12:09 PM ^
It should be honored and retited for the year he is in the college hall of fame.

That sounds fucking painful
