Lions offense is… a mess.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:18 PM ^
Goff looks terrible. The Lions have so little talent at the skill positions.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:22 PM ^
I understand the draft pick component side of the Stafford trade but I don’t understand what the point is of bringing in a qb that’s really struggled the last two years and giving him nothing to work with offensively. Like seriously, what’s the end goal with that?
September 12th, 2021 at 1:27 PM ^
#1 pick next year.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:30 PM ^
Sure, but what do you do with the $30 million owed to Goff in 22, $10 million in 23 and $5 million in 24? This is assuming that you mean they should draft a QB.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:52 PM ^
Hey, it’s not my plan.
Also, Goff costs nothing to cut after 2022. So draft qb in 2022, start Goff at the beginning of the year, transition to the rookie, and then cut Goff after the season.
September 12th, 2021 at 3:07 PM ^
The 10 and 5 are dead money - meaning the Rams (and lions by virtue of trading for him) decided to spread his signing bonus out over multiple years to lessen the upfront cap hit. Therefore, the only way the Lions get away from the 10 & 5 is to trade him, otherwise Goff keeps the entirety of his signing bonus and 15 million of it was already allocated to the 2023 and 2024 season. So yes, they wouldn’t owe him any additional money if they cut him after 2022 but they’re not simply walking away from him either.
September 12th, 2021 at 3:16 PM ^
Lions are going to have a ton of cap space so they can absorb the hire you mention relatively painlessly. They needed a QB so might as take a shit with Goff.
But yes, not taking a WR was stupid. They gave Goff no shot. Not that he has been good.
Anyways, the entire team is a hot mess. Okudah being a bust is an absolute killer.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:19 PM ^
Lions recover a fumble in San Francisco’s side of the field then promptly go backwards and miss a FG.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:19 PM ^
I was actually somewhat impressed with the Lions so far until the last 3 minutes haha. Going to be a long season but there's no expectations when you have no WR's.
What QBs in college should the Lions draft if they end up with a top 3 pick next year?
September 12th, 2021 at 1:28 PM ^
The Lions are 100% going to reach for Sam Howell at #2. Houston should be absolutely god awful and take Rattler, who I'm not sold on either.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:20 PM ^
I miss Matt already.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:22 PM ^
Oh there’s no defense either.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:29 PM ^
The Lions look spectacularly bad in every phase so far. Though the beginning of the first drive looked a bit promising, it’s been downhill.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:32 PM ^
Ragnow is an all pro but everything else so far sucks horribly.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:42 PM ^
Also Hockenson is good.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:31 PM ^
Niners fan here: I’m not pleased with our rushing defense thus far…and our miscues are brutal. This looks like a 4th preseason game so far!
September 12th, 2021 at 1:33 PM ^
That is the weakest roughing the passer call I've seen. And there have been a lot of them in recent years.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:37 PM ^
The helmet got cocked sideways a bit, but yes, Goff did sell that one a bit.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:34 PM ^
Hockenson is a beast. We don’t have the secondary to match him at all
September 12th, 2021 at 1:43 PM ^
Surprised the niners are allowing a scheme centered around Ragnow and Hockenson to be effective. If I’m San Fran, I dare Detroit to run outside the tackles and throw to someone else.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:42 PM ^
Jags down 14-0 to a hapless Texans team.
Welcome to the NFL, Meyer. The suck is only going to get worse from here.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:55 PM ^
You can almost feel the ‘health problems’ starting back up again
September 12th, 2021 at 2:37 PM ^
His health problems aren’t related to football. They’re due to extracurricular activities.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:44 PM ^
Solid drive by Detroit. Our DLine is supposed to be the strongest part of our team, and Detroit is making them look very, very average right now.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:52 PM ^
Normally pre-season is meaningless, but when everyone is in the wrong gaps on run plays that might be something you can extrapolate from.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:54 PM ^
Coaches screaming at Jeff Okudah for giving up the edge on the TD run. Massive draft bust.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:10 PM ^
That was kinda uncomfortable to watch…had a lot of Izzo qualities about it!
September 12th, 2021 at 2:24 PM ^
One is a conversation between two grown men who are both well compensated professionals. The other happens between a multi-millionaire rape enabler and an unpaid (often) minor. These situations are not the same, not even close
September 12th, 2021 at 2:47 PM ^
Very few college basketball players are under 18.
September 12th, 2021 at 3:01 PM ^
Good point - not firing on all cylinders today. Still stand by the rest of the post - In terms of the relative power/standing of people involved, it’s nothing like Izzo or Brian Kelly going all purple on kids
September 12th, 2021 at 2:10 PM ^
No surprises from the Lions so far. Offense is ok, just lacking playmakers in the passing game outside of Hockenson. Defense is absolutely atrocious, but that was known.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:12 PM ^
If Hockenson gets hurt this team won't average 100 yards off offense per game.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:16 PM ^
My expectation for the Rams are increasing by the play.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:24 PM ^
I am dreading playing the Rams. It may not be a popular opinion on a Michigan blog, but I think Stafford is a stud. Him plus McVay and all their weapons on offense is gonna be scary. Plus, they have a top 5 defense too…Rams are a legit super bowl contender
September 12th, 2021 at 4:08 PM ^
Stud may be rich, but most Michiganders feel that Stafford mostly did his job.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:17 PM ^
AAAAH HA HA HA HA HA!!!!
September 12th, 2021 at 2:22 PM ^
Lions will threaten 0-17.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:24 PM ^
This is fucking hysterical.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:30 PM ^
49ers with 11 YPA and 7.6 YPC and their drive chart looks like this:
Fumble
Touchdown
Touchdown
Touchdown
Field Goal
with the pick-six thrown in there too.
What a joke
September 12th, 2021 at 2:39 PM ^
How many kneecaps have been bitten off?
September 12th, 2021 at 2:45 PM ^
Lions defense is awful.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:46 PM ^
Thinking about all those on here who thought Goff was just as good as Stafford and believed the trade was anything other than an attempt to increase the Lions' chances of getting the first pick in 2022.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:52 PM ^
The point of the trade was to get as many first rounders for Stafford as possible. The Rams were so desperate to get rid of Goff that they were willing to throw in a third first round pick for the Lions to take him. Plus, with the defense playing this poorly, it’s not like it even matters if Goff is any good.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:47 PM ^
Comically bad defense.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:49 PM ^
The Lions’ defense might be the worst defense in NFL history.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:54 PM ^
It's goddamn bullshit that the goddamn Ford family keeps shoving this bullshit down our throats and we keep accepting it.
There is not a more inept franchise in all of sports.
September 12th, 2021 at 2:59 PM ^
Everyone knew this was gonna be a project, Patty and Quinn absolutely ran this team into the ground.
I still laugh when last year Valenti (yeah I know) talked about how it would be better for them to start and empty propane tank instead of whoever was one of the starting corners.
Hopefully they pull one or two wins out of their ass, because this about one if the worst teams I've ever seen.
edit: It was Jalani Tavai at middle linebacker, whos now on the Patriots practice squad.
September 12th, 2021 at 3:04 PM ^
The problem is the Lions have currently been a project for 85 years.
September 12th, 2021 at 3:01 PM ^
Nothing warms my heart more than a 4 yard out route on 3&9.
