New Years Resolution

Submitted by Honest Abe on
Happy New Year's Eve! Hope everyone had a good year. Things are going good and hope next year does too. What is your NY resolution? Mine is to be nicer and to make myself more useful. The latter will be harder than the former I'm afraid. Start the New Year off right and get hammered tonight folks.

Shouting instructions to my team on the screen and controlling what the players do on the field through my body english. Also find new superstitions to help my Wolverines win because the old ones weren't effective as I would like this season.

Get to this day in one year's time, look back on 2018 with a glass of Macallan 12 in my hand, and be able to honestly say:

"OK - THAT was a good one."

That's the "what." It's the "how" that I'm still working on.

Last year, I worked to get back in shape and lost 50 lbs. The last couple months, I have been working towards a new goal for 2018.

Gonna run a marathon. Aiming for the Marine Corps Marathon in October.

Running a marathon has always been a “bucket list” item for me, albeit one that I have not worked towards at all. Just one way up on the shelf so to speak. Being able to run the Marine Corps Marathon as a former Marine would mean a lot me personally as well. I may even have to wear my old Marine Corps silkies lol.

Lose 4 pounds to get to 190. It’s my comfy weight at 6’3”. Improve my handle and drives to the hoop. I’m 43 and still play basketball twice a week. I’ll hit 3’s all day long but want to have better drives to the basket. In a Michigan hoops context, when I go to the hoop, it’s more like a Duncan Robinson straight line. I want to be more like MAAR. I know it sounds silly, but I went back to playing after several years off due to surgeries. It feels great—I can’t recreate that kind of workout anywhere else. Finish my basement doing most of it on my own. Walk my dog more. Talk to my sisters and brother more. They all live on the West Coast.

Keep on my diet. Over the past month I've lost about 16 lbs and 2 inches, using my Fitbit and eating mostly paleo, fresh, one ingredient type stuff. No bakery, pastas, no dairy and no soda. I've taken a couple days off over the holidays because it's just too bloody hard to eat right at Christmas parties, so I've gained a couple back, but I've never made this kind off progress on a diet before and it feels amazing. I want to get my gym membership started again but I'm afraid there's going to be too many other douchebags with resolutions that don't know wtf they're doing.

For the past three years, I resolved to do 10,000 push-ups during the year. I have met that resolution each year. You need to do ~60 push-ups every other day to accomplish this. It's a good resolution because it is quantifiable and achievable. I will decide tomorrow whether or not to go for another year.

The first year I did just the push ups. The second year I added 10k sit-up, but they didn't do much other than hurt my back. So this year I quit the sit-ups and added 10k bicep curls. I was thinking of doing something for the triceps next year. I don't have time to go to a gym regularly, but I would like to do some strength training. I remember reading about Herschel Walker in the 80's doing 1000 push-ups per day or something ridiculous like that. Obviously, I'm not going to do that, but I am interested in seeing what happens if I focus on a muscle group for a year. My wife complements me on my back and shoulders. It's the front belly-region I have trouble with.

I used to think I was pretty good - the Walker regimen always floored me.

I did get the core/stomach thing right in satisfying the Army sit-up requirement.  Crunches and planks as alternative stressors are better than just repetitive sit-ups.

More diversity:  I went from being an every day runner to adding cycling for aerobic capacity.

Bottom line - parts wear out.

This is all making me think about a useful New Years Resolution, thanks.  I tried telling my wife I was going to a plant based diet and could not get her to stop laughing.

Stop reading the comment sections under news articles. It's like a car accident for me that I can't look away from, even knowing that there will never be anything of value typed there. In fact, 99% of the comments will be from the dregs of humanity. I inevitably walk away from the computer questioning whether or not the internet is a benefit to mankind.. I'm also going to try and find a way to treat a bone cancer that primarily targets teenagers. I'd love to hit a grand slam with a cure, but even something that gives one kid a chance they otherwise wouldn't have had would be a home run.

Headed to rose bowl tomorrow with my whole family including daughter who is undergrad at uga and 4 of her sorority sisters. Spent boo coo bucks on tail gate supplies, tickets and parking passes. Totally worth it. My resolution is to be more positive and pray often that um can return to the granddaddy of them all, by far the best bowl game. Win or lose a great time will be had by all! Have been to 7 michigan rose bowls. The record is 1-6 with the one being the nc. Hope springs eternal. Go blue.
