New Scoreboard Renderings Released
October 18th, 2022 at 5:51 PM ^
I was momentarily confused by the renderings that appear to show big-ass dotted lines around the screens, but then concluded that the dotted lines indicate the size of the existing scoreboards that are being replaced.
The article should have that information in the text or as a caption.

Dave Ablauf is lucky he didn't post it here first. He would have gotten seriously neg banged for that omission.
October 18th, 2022 at 5:52 PM ^
Missed opportunity to have 42-27 on the board in the rendering.

I cede all my mgopoints to you.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:53 PM ^
I appreciate the gesture, but unless I can use them to buy a new bottle of Lagavulin, you can hang onto them.

It's glorious

I'd love for Michigan to fill in the gaps above the stadium between the luxury boxes and the end zone scoreboards with sound-reflecting metal. Then it would get really loud on the field. Prior to the luxury boxes, the reputation of Michigan Stadium is that it was the quietest 100,000 fans you ever saw. A lot of that is the architecture.

I mean I feel like it’s pretty damn loud during the big games. Like last year against Washington I was watching the game with the Reddit game thread open and everyone in it including many fans of other teams thought it looked absolutely amazing and the crowd was intense. It was clearly loud. The OSU game last year even more. I just don’t think it’s as true as it used to be years ago. Maybe some of the bad games but that’s true for any stadium really. I think the best gauge for what a teams home environment is like is how crazy does it get for the big games.
October 18th, 2022 at 5:55 PM ^
So the scoreboards will have smaller dimensions than the current scoreboard, but presumably will be 4K.
October 18th, 2022 at 7:46 PM ^
Wait, smaller or bigger? I thought the dotted line was the current scoreboard and the rendering was what it will look like after? Or is it reversed?
October 18th, 2022 at 11:01 PM ^
The poster is confused. The white dotted line is the current board.
So basically the screen for the new board will be the size of the existing board, including the frame.
October 18th, 2022 at 5:55 PM ^
Little disappointed with these, thought they were going to be adding more than just a column on each side.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:09 PM ^
Agreed - maybe cover the ugly steel columns with brick, or do something to make the supports look better...not just add more of them.
Also, not sure if possible due to the echo effect, but would love if they could find a way to lower the total volume by adding speakers to both scoreboards instead of just the one. As it stands, sitting in the upper rows of the North end zone is unbearably loud.
October 18th, 2022 at 7:08 PM ^
I sit closer to the south end zone so I hope they keep the sound as it is.
October 18th, 2022 at 7:24 PM ^
What a profoundly generous sentiment. Hats off to you, sir.
October 18th, 2022 at 10:16 PM ^
I’ve lost some hearing in the ear that faces the north scoreboard.
October 19th, 2022 at 1:43 AM ^
Exactly right. Those stupid metal poles might be required by the engineering but from an architectural / aesthetic standpoint it looks like they ran out of money or were installed at the same time of the corrugated steel halo disaster.
October 19th, 2022 at 12:07 PM ^
IIRC, when they originally designed and built the scoreboards, they extended the foundations to be able to take the additional load of expansion, but they are now limited to that foundation without drastic and expensive rework.
I agree, though, should have gone a bit bigger, especially with the proliferation of mega scoreboards around the country.
October 18th, 2022 at 5:57 PM ^
It's crazy to think that we just updated our scoreboards 10 years ago and they are already obsolete.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:00 PM ^
Saw them last season at the opener and they quality of the video was very poor. Also, dead spots were starting to appear on both boards. Considering that and the age of the boards, it was time.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:42 PM ^
Speaking of obsolete, they couldn't have used a more recent rendering picture than one of Shea and Cesar?
October 18th, 2022 at 7:25 PM ^
I really just like that the renderings are Microsoft Paint quality
October 18th, 2022 at 7:03 PM ^
they had big video scoreboards in Indiana, but they didn't know how to use them. Terrible replays the entire game. Be thankful that we know how to show replays on our 'obsolete' boards. Personally, I find nothing fundamentally wrong with our current displays. If I want 4K replays, I'll stay at home...
October 18th, 2022 at 10:58 PM ^
Unfortunately Dave Brandon gave the contract for new scoreboards to a friend who saw his business and that technology go obsolete and out of business. So instead of an update they need completely new technology for the scoreboards.

Commas save lives…
October 18th, 2022 at 11:00 PM ^
They were obsolete when they were put in...same as the ones they put in in the 1998 renovation, a lot of schools had already had that style for 8-10 years.
October 19th, 2022 at 9:09 AM ^
Of course, you can't break with tradition. We're Michigan, you know, Leaders and Best. We're not Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys.
October 21st, 2022 at 10:43 PM ^
I guess it’s like replacing a tv at this point. I’m sure there’s money to burn if they so desire.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:03 PM ^
They look ok, but I’m pretty underwhelmed by them. I think they could have made them a bit wider than what is rendered - at least 20’ more feet on each side.
That being said, I’m mostly confused as it looks like the main board is staying g about the same size roughly, while the side boards (for stats/info) get most of the new real-estate.
October 18th, 2022 at 10:39 PM ^
I think the dotted line indicates the ENTIRE current board, including the enclosure and the part of the screen used for stats. So I think it’s a bigger difference than it initially appears to be.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:03 PM ^
What is this!?! Jumbotron for Ants? They should be atleast 3 times this size!
October 18th, 2022 at 11:03 PM ^
huh?
It's bigger than what the stadium currently has. You can't see the current boards? These will larger.

He's absolutely right.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:07 PM ^
I hate the CFB arms race, hate how much money could be used for other things at the University, but I want my team to win...so I guess I am a bit of a hypocrite.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:10 PM ^
On the plus side, it's fully funded by the athletic department. And you can rationalize it by thinking better fan experience = more revenue = more resources/programs for athletes and students.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:21 PM ^
I am nostalgic for the incandescent bulbs of the old (old) score board at times given my indifference from the useless replays currently.
BUT
I think this could be some sofi / Benz style wrap from box to box. Like who buys a 65 inch TV right now? Are we poor or something?
October 18th, 2022 at 6:54 PM ^
Yes! My 70" tv died recently and my wife suggested we get a 65". I said "are we peasants? No."
October 18th, 2022 at 7:27 PM ^
Here's me with my 32 inch, which doubles as my desktop, thinking that I am ALL THAT. Thanks for puncturing my balloon, people!
October 19th, 2022 at 9:13 AM ^
So when your wife asks what do you want to do tonight, do you say "Watch a little TV"?
October 21st, 2022 at 10:50 PM ^
Well the athletic department is it’s own entity and not reliant on the university for money so no need to feel guilty supporting them. Unless you want to argue that they should be making money to then give to the university.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:07 PM ^
any word on a functional wifi system?
October 18th, 2022 at 6:15 PM ^
Don’t be silly
October 18th, 2022 at 6:17 PM ^
Meh...I would love to see a more modern, innovative looking scoreboard, even one that, dare I say, was wide enough to wrap around the curve just a tad on each side.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:27 PM ^
would hold a little bit more sound in as well, amplifying the home field advantage
October 18th, 2022 at 6:50 PM ^
This is what I was hoping for, a wrap-around solution (somewhat like what Sparty has on the one side) to help trap more noise. Just adding an extra bit of dimension to the sides is kinda underwhelming
October 21st, 2022 at 10:52 PM ^
This would be cool. We have curved TV’s, a sweet wraparound style scoreboard would be awesome.
October 18th, 2022 at 6:26 PM ^
man who knew that they would have a still image of shea patterson on them
