New Sam Webb Interviews
The Michigan Insider just came out with new video interviews with some of the assistant coaches, and the most noteworthy of them all is the one below with Chris Partridge. In the video, he mentions that in the last 4 practices in the spring, Brad Hawkins rated as the best safety. He may have mentioned this in the past, but if he did, I missed it.
I'm not one to bash on Metellus like others on this board, but I would say that Hawkins has higher upside at that position athletically. I've been excited at the thought of him having a breakout year, but I didn't see that happening until 2019. We might get to see that breakout sooner rather than later.
Yes, I know that just because he was the best safety for the last 4 practices doesn't mean he'll start or have a breakout year, but he is definitely competing for the spot. That's enough for me to get a little giggly.
If you're hungry for any football content like I am, I encourage you to check out the Michigan Insider page for the rest of the interviews as well.

Isn't this a win-win scenario and no need for bashing of Metellus? Metellus can play, especially when compared to the poor history of Michigan safeties over the last decade plus. If someone is good enough to supplant Metellus, giddy up.
Having good football players on your football team is good :-O
That's quite the hot take. Don't go too far out on a limb...

With the inevitable toxic comments this thread will have regarding his play, I just wanted to clarify that I'm not among the Metellus hating crowd. I thought he had a really good year with the exception of a couple head scratching plays toward the end. I think we'll be in good hands either way.
I agree. I think it's fair to say that Metellus has outperformed his recruiting rankings since he's been on campus, and I've been a fan of his since he stepped in against FSU. Effort never seems to be an issue with him, but the prospect of getting more athleticism on the field should excite everyone, whether it be at safety or anywhere else. I will say that Metellus is in the tough position (in terms of how the fan base perceives him) of having a couple potentially huge plays, which you really want to see your safety make against our biggest rival, slip through his fingers, and the memory of those admittedly still burn in the back of my mind. With an entire off-season to improve, I'm looking forward to what he can bring to the field this year. At the same time, Hawkins getting positive mention can only fuel the competition at a position where you want as many solid contributors/big playmakers ready to go.
Yes, yes it is.
Thanks Captain Obvious!
Hopefully we get some fall camp video after tomorrows first practice.
Chris Partridge looks like he takes big poops
takes or leaves?
It takes one to know one!
I thought it was a compliment.
Or this could simply be a case of throwing a bone to a guy that has been working very hard. May mean nothing.
True...but does anything ever really mean anything? What is life.
Football come quick.
Right. This staff has mastered the art of motivational speaking.
The Greg Mattison interview talking about the inside of the D-Line is pretty encouraging as well.
- Similar to what we've heard: Dwumfor may be better than Mo was at the same point in his career
- He told Sam to write this part down: Mone and Marshal will both have a great year
- The most surprising quote to me: Carlo Kemp may be the strongest lineman on the defense.
NOTE: The Greg Mattison interviews are from March.
For those who missed the news that Berkley Edwards is a graduate transfer who's walking on to the team and apparently is in the mix as a kick returner, here's a LINK.
Ball Hawkins!!
That would be pretty freaking awesome if Hawkins turns out to be a stud at safety! We may not give up any points this year!
GO BLUE!!

Brad Hawkins was a fantastic athlete coming out of high school.
