New Practice Video

I don't see this posted anywhere so I'm putting it up.

That video left me a little concerned for the defense, but I really think the offense might be that awesome.
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:44 PM ^
Well also remember that typically the first 2 or 3 days of practice will be better on the offense than it will the defense. The offense knows the play calls and the snap count. The defense is reacting to the offense and this takes a few days to really get going.

Steph Hopkins is a LOAD

"That's Chris Floyd...he's 245 pounds and he...is...a...LOAD."
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:34 PM ^
hah, that was awesome. I could hear Keith Jackson saying that in my head.
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:41 PM ^
should have too many short yardage problems with him...he isn't afraid of contact. Can we start "Hopkins-Rage"?
That is the perfect quote to go with my avatar.

Easily the best part of my week. I thought the same thing about defense being a little shaky but it IS the first practice and anyone who played football knows that the first day is rough. I am extremely excited for 2010.

+1 for giving archer wings.
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:28 PM ^
release looked good. No signs of shoulder problems at all. I also noticed he's wearing #5 again, not 4.
Speed, speed and more speed.

Great look at cox bull rushing straight through a tackle at the very end of the extended version
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:41 PM ^
Can the extended version be found on Youtube? I have problems with mgoblue.com videos to begin with, and the extended version isn't working at all.
Gotta love seeing video from a practice in full pads though.
For the extended version, you have to download Microsoft Silverlight. It's available on the CBS page.
Dear sweet lord, let's not go down THAT road again...
David Molk, where art thou?
Did they really put "Rich Rodriquez"?
-facepalm-
"Shaw and Cox looked reaaally good."
This makes me happy.
-JB Fitzgerald DUSTED Fitzgerald Toussaint. Toussaint was unimpressive in both the clips we saw of him. Reports are mixed.
-There were 2 clips of Denard Robinson throwing the ball. The first one he clearly is dissatisfied and goes "dang!". That's not a great sign. I've heard lots of balls have been sailing on Devin and Denard both.
-Cam Gordon gets several looks in these clips at safety. Apparently there was a fight between Dews and Gibson about where Gordon went, and Gibby won because of the lack of depth at safety. There's a reason they're both excited about this kid.
-Jeremy Jackson (17) doesn't attack the defender when he's blocking. Dews tells him so.
-Austin White is a quick kid, but very skinny. Could use a redshirt, but the guys at GBMW think he'll see some time this fall with his pass catching abilities.
-Shaw is our best RB from these clips. I believe he is currently our best healthy running back and will get the start come the fall.
-Leach makes a few good plays in these clips. He'll get some looks come the fall as well. The staff is very high on him, though he's clearly limited by his athleticism.
the same problem???
So many styles, one is almost sure to pan out.

So I just watched that video five times. Good stuff. Monday is looking better already.
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:31 PM ^
Seeing this video was just what I needed today... I wasn't even thinking that Shaw and Cox would be 1 and 2 on the RB two deep. I am still hoping that Fitz and Smith are 1 and 2 (assuming the surgery went ok). It's nice to have so many options at tailback. I am an old school Michigan football guy, and I'd rather see this team only pass when they have to. All of us know the value of smashing a team with the run for four quarters. If the offensive line can be really nasty this year, the sky's the limit for this team. Go BLUE!!!
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:35 PM ^
then there really shouldn't BE that many passes.
... with lots of Ufer memories. I think we'll have an offense that's in better sync than last year, plus with a solid running game and a dynamic passing attack, we'll put the fear of Bo back into our opponents.
I'm hopeful that we're a little more judicious about play calling when the weather turns bad. (A little more run, a little less pass.)

Shaw looks so fluid in his cuts. He barely slows down and is back up to full speed so quick. This makes me happy!
Was coming off his hernia surgery last year and got very, very few reps. In the game time he saw, he was tentative hitting the hole and tiptoed around.
Two years ago, you could tell Mike Shaw was the future. He is one speedy dude. In Smith's absence, I guarantee Shaw starts over Cox. If we're lucky, he'll pick up where he left off two years ago, rather than last year's injured Shaw.
I know it's early, but Cox has been the talk of the spring. I think too many people are counting him out. #15 is going to have some good highlights before all is said and done.
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:45 PM ^
Some things I noticed -
- You can see Moundros #44 playing LB, looks like with the second or third group (b/c Gardner is the QB, they probably went third team v. third team).
- Schilling #52 snapping for Gardner.
- Cam Gordon #4 playing D on the same unit as Woolfolk.
- Interviewer dude calls mike cox "Sean Cox".
Yes, these observations are probably worthless.
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:47 PM ^
I think this early in spring practice, they just mix everybody up to see who gels the best as a group, and which mixes produce the best results.
When you're coming off of two losing seasons, no position is "safe" as part of the ones.
The mods at Rivals have mentioned first, second, and third teams. So...no offense, but I think you're wrong.
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:49 PM ^
He may have said "Shaw and Cox". I heard the same thing.
March 22nd, 2010 at 12:55 PM ^
I'm pretty sure that's what he said aswell seeing as they had most of the shots runningback wise.
Yeah, whoever was doing the interview (it wasn't Doug Karsch) had a very annoying voice and needs to learn to enunciate.
I thought that too but I think he said "Shaw and Cox" but it was kind of slurred together as "Shawn (or Shaun or Sean) Cox"

Leach looks pretty weak to me. It was good to see him taking down cox in a drill but the kid doesn't look fluid or athletic enough to be a real contributor. Just goes to show how bad things must have been last year where we ended up putting him in over obi.
He's really, really small for a linebacker. He was either 200 or 205 on the spring roster. Yikes.
He may be small but he did have a nice take-down. Though it was more as the guy was running over him, so you may have a valid point there. At least he held on unlike a few players in the past that I can think of.
They seemed to highlight Michael Shaw moreso than any other player. He looked quick in the Michigan drills and then they showed a good breakaway run at the end of the video. Can we speculate he's looking better in camp thus far? Or just right time, right place with a camera.
And a second note on the Michigan drills, but the D-linemen were getting owned. Is it me or shouldn't they be breaking away from their O-line counter part to get to the running back as he's coming around?
The Michigan drill is not conducive to getting spectacular plays out of your defensive linemen. They go head up against the offensive lineman, which rarely happens in games. Usually, the only time you have a guy going head up against an offensive lineman is if the defensive lineman is a nose tackle in a 3-front alignment.
Meanwhile, the running back just picks a side and goes.
So unless the OL is a complete waste of space, you shouldn't expect to get many plays from the defensive linemen in that drill.

Who is the dude interviewing RR? "Shawn Cox"..... ugh.
I think he said "Shaw and Cox," but it certainly wasn't clear.
Edit: Didn't see that this was discussed below.
I hope Tate has just "Forcier" on the back and not "T. Forcier". Anyone know if he'll be Forcier this year? I thought last year he had to be T. Forcier because Jason was on the initial roster? Anyone know?

No but it's so urgent that I'm sure Brian will have it posted in big bold font when someone finds out.
... Taylor Lewan push that sled? (At 1:50.)
He was pushing more than half the load it looked like.
I just watched this for the 6th time. itch, itch, itchin
...I can't wait.
Also, DG looks like a giant. A speedy, football throwing giant.
its blocked at work. But one thing I did notice was Campbell getting owned in the M-Drill. While I don't expect much from D-line in these drills, they should be able to hold their own in these drills. The o-lineman he was up against basically stood him up....and if you look at Wills feet they aren't even moving. He should have at LEAST been able to push the linemen back a yard or so....
Per Magnus:
"The Michigan drill is not conducive to getting spectacular plays out of your defensive linemen. They go head up against the offensive lineman, which rarely happens in games. Usually, the only time you have a guy going head up against an offensive lineman is if the defensive lineman is a nose tackle in a 3-front alignment.

It was only the first day in Pads, and the first real M Drill of Spring....the video did show the intensity of the O-against the D....there was almost a 50 pound difference between the O-lineman and the d-lineman....these drills are not only meant to develope and improve skills be to push the D and O lines against each other for bragging rights....each day will be more intense......
By Craig Roh (naturally he would raise eyebrowse):
"We're working on this new defense coach is putting in."
Hmmm...I'm guessing we might be a pure 4-2-5...can't wait for the clinic!
