NDSU/Richmond an Stagg Bowl open thread

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on

It's crazy the amount of dedication the Bison fans have for a non FBS football program. 6-0 NDSU and Mount Union tied up with St. Thomas.

Watching from Richmond, but not a UR fan/alum. Hope they win; the night they won their one championship was fun to be out.

I really need to drive to Roanoke to see that stagg bowl one year.

Was at Stagg in '94 - my Brits won a natty that year. Was in a different Virginia town back then. Rolled into town with a bunch of drunk Midwestern kids on busses. Those poor town-folk never saw us coming. My buddy is still on the banned list for Knights Inn and affiliated hotels.

He was the unfortunate soul who booked a block of rooms and then had others pay him. He got nailed with a bunch of room damages. Don't worry about him though, he's purely Ritz Carlton now. The KI ban is just a funny footnote. Funniest thing I remember was 1 dude on the roof of the building with a joint in his mouth and a beer in his hand hoping the cops didn't see him. We were young.

The Stagg Bowl, i.e the division III national football champinoship, is played in of all places Salem, Virginia which happens to be my hometown. The Stagg Bowl has been played there since 1993.  The stadium is my highschool's stadium which is absurdly big for a class aaa highschool. It's not quite but almost the size of WMU's stadium which I've seen in person. It's a football crazy town in sw Virginia which recently won it's state championship.

Io Triumphie! I was at Albion at the same time. I didn't go on the trip, but I distinctly remember being relieved that they delayed final exams for a few days to allow the kids to go on the trip if they wanted. As I recall Mount Union were the prohibitive favorites but we ended up winning handily. Good times....

There's throwing into traffic and then there is throwing into a multi-vehicle wreck - Richmond's WR Dukes got nailed from about five different directions on that one.

Also, NDSU is making this look almost too easy, but rushing for about 6.5 yards per  carry and now intercepting that throw will do that.

"Mr. Lockdown"

That's the nickname of one of the Richmond DBs - #8 Jordan - who's mother is friends with my wife.

That's a great nickname for a DB.

They basically provide scholarships for football players.. It all started with Larry Keheres and the school president. Did you really think Mount Union was that much better than every other DIII school for almost two decades? Before you mention Wisconsin Whitewater, they basically do the same thing with benefit of getting funding because they are part of the larger University of Wisconsin state system.

There is a school that used to be in the OAC. They were going for Phi Beta Kappa acredidation. They were told they would never be approved if they were associated with a school like Mount Union due to their disregard for the ethics of DIII academics due to the "academic scholarships" for athletics. That school went to a new conference. This is a school that used to be very competitive in the OAC. Would they have left the conference if this was not true? The school received the acredidation after they left the OAC. No one cares because it is DIII, but I think it is sad. How many teams have been denied legitimate chances to be National Champs because two schools felt cheating was worth it for some reason.

Your qualifier of "to a degree" is where the problem comes in. It typically is less than a handful of kids would get the benefit at any other DIII schools. Mount Union and UW-Whitewater do it for the majority of the team. I get all the cheating in DI because there is so much money involved. DIII still basically plays for the love of the game. Why cheat and deny teams a legit shot of achieving the ultimate goal? It just pisses me off a lot more at that level.

I read a whole thread at d3.com after reading your comment, but it was (predictably) dominated by Mount Union and, even more stridently, UWW people and a few others who like to suck up to the fans of the more successful teams.

Would be interested to know if you've ever found this covered anywhere or can point to any resources that bolster the contention.

I have a very close relative who led the college I referenced efforts to gain Phi Beta Kappa acredidation. The same relative knew the Miunt Union president and coach from attending many joint meetings together. If I remember correctly Keheres and Tressell had some connection. Who better to learn about institutional cheating from?

Fifth straight final for NDSU. With a backup quarterback in this game. Two different quarterbacks over that 5 season span (not including this backup) and last year was the first year for the current HC. I don't care what level it is, that is damn impressive. 4 straight titles is pretty incredible as well. Hats off to NDSU.
