The n-word : DG

Submitted by qbyrd on

I came across this article earlier in the day and it shocked me.  I have not seen it posted anywhere on the board and thought this would be a good first post.

It simply is an article about our quarterback Devin Gardner has been called the n-word by the same people who call themselves fans of Michigan football.

This is just sad.  How could a kid who has given his young life to the great University of Michigan and the fans deserve something so pathetic from some of the fans regardless of how he has played.  He has given everything he has, and has done everything asked of him as well.  I know its not all of them, but man it still is sad that he would have to deal with this.

"I've been called the N-word so many times this year," Gardner told the Detroit News. "One guy told me I was the N-word, and said, 'I know N-words can't play quarterback.' And I was like, 'Are we not past this?' Say what you want about my skill, but come on."

Like someone mentioned, this sad phenomenon is not unique to this fanbase, but let me just reiterate that anyone who states a similar racist belief on this blog will be sent to Bolivia, then banned, and then have his/her belongings peed on by a horse with the runs. It is incredibly sad that in 2014 there are still such a**holes out there and worse that they have had access to social media.

I can only imagine what is said about black QB's in the south.  I'm sure there are some Alabama fans who weren't happy with Blake Sims given the way they have been playing before their last game.

it is, but it isnt.

like, yes, racism is still around and people are ignorant, but at the same time, i think society has done a pretty good job of ending this kind of stuff. it will still happen from time to time, but i think as a whole, there is much less racism today than there was 20-30-40 years ago

There are many ignorant losers out there, that live their unfulfilled lives through the teams that they root for.  When things do not go well, these imbeciles resort to the most base level communication that they know to represent their hatred.  Unfortunately every fan base has some of these types.

It is sad and upsetting. All you can really do is confront it when you see it and raise your kids to treat everyone with respect. These days the racists hide in open sight. Just wading through comments on yahoo articles makes me feel dirty.

this is awful for devin and he doesnt need to deal with that. and i am actually surprised that he is getting a substantial amount of racist hate mail. but lets be honest here, there are always going to be idiots out there. this isnt a problem unique to devin gardner or michigan. it sucks, but it is reality. unfortunately, there are a large amount of racist idiots in this case, but if we are being honest with ourselves, this isnt surprising. some people will say anything to get attention and this has certainly achieved that.

i think the best thing to do is support devin and ignore stories like this. that is really the only way to combat this kind of stupidity.

I live on the southwestern Michigan there a lot (more than you think) of closet racist. Most of them tend to be uneducated and hard headed, so there really not rational thinkers. I know a few college kids that are racist but they tend to be above average smarts but they are upper class. So unfortuanetly there is still a deep seated racist problem that still lingers out there and it is sad to know some of them call themselves Michigan fans. I remember watching the fab 5 doc. and they were talking about the death threats and racial slurs because we were starting five black freshman. I think we have came a far way since then but there will always be bigots out there.

Im actually not shocked at all.  As an AA who spent 8 years of his life at UM and obtained both a BS and a doctorate degrees,  some of the things that I have personally heard about myself from other UM students and alums are repulsive.  In my profession, I am able to interact with many people, some of which graduated from UM.  I have heard people with my own ears, professionals, call DG a "thug".  It is unbelieveable!!  Don't be ignorant in thinking its only a small percentage of "fans".  There are a lot of current and former students that share these sickning views.  Take a look at "Fab Five" the movie.  Those players were treated the same way.  I was fortunate to know a lot of UM players in undergrad (we are only 4-6% of the student body so you get to know quite a few athletes, i even know sam webb personally..lol) so I heard a lot of things first hand.  This is a bigger problem than many would like to admit.  Just my opinion, but I believe this is one of the reasons that led to RR early termination.

My fiancé is a classmate of DG in the school of social work. She never stops praising his work ethic and how much he cares for the field of social work.

I have seen tweets of white suburban high school students in the metro DC area -- very mixed-race areas, although mostly mixing white and Latins -- and the five-letter variant of the "N" word (replace the last ER with A) is used all the time.  I mean ALL the time.  I'm not reallhy sure what it's a reference too - just African-Americans, or anyone, any race/sex etc.  But it was kind of shocking, the way it's used constantly.  And not done in anger or to belittle, it's, like, just a common word.  Almost used like the word "homie," although I'm not sure if it's intended to be slightly derogatory or whatever.

It's almost like, if you tell people you can't use the word... they use the word.  You know, forbidden fruits, etc.  Kids, immaature, no sense of history, etc. etc.

And then you have the problem of black people using the word amongst themselves, or even in mixed company.  It's got a different connotation, although not always something you can give a pass to.  However, I think some whites see blacks using the N word and it justifies the use of it by others.

So the use of the six-letter variant by (1) uneducated white trash and (2) highly educated white elite is not surprising, and it just shows, it's going to take generations to really eliminate the stigma and roots of these attitudes (and the words reflecting them).

Because racism will never die! Unfortunately, racism is perpetuated in most facets of the MSM, and entertainment. If you have a chance, look at similar offenses, and how the news reports it, or how the papers title the stories. (small offenses) This may not be a popular opinion, but if you take the time to look at it, you'll see. Now, all racism should go away, but I think we all know that it won't.

The reason it's so horrible to me is that it's 2014 and racist attitudes and behaviors are taught. No one is born racist. Anyone who is racist most certainly have parents and grandparents who are racist as well. Then they have kids who are racist and the cycle continues. For this reason as sad as it is, racism will always be with us.

Any chance of some young Mgo wizard coming up with a online petition or some other way we could give Devin a show of moral support?

He has not played well this year, but we are lucky to have him.

I would love to get some sort of mass message to Devin letting him know we all support him and think that kind of garbage is just disgusting.  Yeah, he hasn't played well this year, but there isn't a single moment where I'm not proud to have him represent Michigan.

Anyone who would try to marginalize someone by using a slur should evaluate their language, whether they're talking about an athlete or not. This includes racist, sexist, homophobic,  transphobic, ableist, etc language.

pretty pathetic to write the AD and call a nice young man such a name, for all things over a stupid game. sadly we live in a country that doesn't allow for open race discussion or I think a lit of thus old timey non sense would go away.

I am really starting to hate this fanbase. I know it's only a small portion of fans who tweet and post these sort of disgusting comments, but they are vocal. And I think Wolverinebutt's idea of a petition to show support for DG (and the rest of the players) is a great suggestion, which I'd love to be a part of. We seriously need to do something, especially after so many weeks of negativity.

I have a whole lot of respect for Devin Gardner.  He has not been the best QB to date but he graduated from Michigan in 3 years while playing football.  How many of you could do that?  I busted my ass for 4 years to graduate and the most athletic thing I did was haul books up and down State St.

No matter how decent or moral your circle of friends/family might be, never forget that there's plenty of people outside of your circle who are morally bankrupt. The whole world hasn't evolved. There's plenty of people who live in your neighborhoods, watch the same shows you watch, go to the same college you went to and cheer for the same sports teams you cheer for who are terrible humans.

"Only Southerners are racist" is a lie that has been told in the industrial midwest, agricultural midwest and Northeast for a century to avoid examining their own prejudices and to avoid looking too closely at the people around them who might just be garbage. It also ignores that racism is a human failure, not an intrinsically American one or regional one. There's just as many rich racists with fine degrees from exceptional universities as there are slack jawed yokels who can only spell the n-word correctly.

If you’re a self-identified Michigan fan who called Devin Gardner a n-gg-r, fuck right off and pound sand because I want nothing to do with you.

If you’re a self-identified Michigan fan who called C’sonte York, Boubakar Cissko or Terrelle fkn Pryor a n-gg-r, fuck right off and pound sand because I want nothing to do with you.

It’s a fucking racial slur and you don’t become exempt from it solely by being “one of the good ones”

At this point, I’m going to slightly tread over the politics threshold here and I apologize for this, mods, but I feel it’s important to underscore this…

White people need to stop wringing their hands over the casual use of the word amongst black communities because that’s so much false equivalence.  I don’t like the word either but yes: casual intra-community use of the n-word is a “right” that blacks have that whites don’t.  And if you find that double-standard in any way comparable to all the rights a white dude enjoys vs. those a black man doesn’t even in today’s America, then you need to seriously re-evaluate your perspective.  I’m not going to speak for black men because I’m not one myself, but I’m willing to bet that most of them would trade the tacit tolerance for use of the n-word amongst his peers in a heartbeat for the ability to get a bank loan or apartment least in several metro areas, to not have women clutch their purses a little tighter when they walk by and to have a better-than-even chance of not getting shot by cops.
