The Morning After

Submitted by OaklandInPlay on October 20th, 2019 at 8:02 AM

Coming into the game, I thought we’d get killed. We were the better team, out gained them, and dominated the second half. Few plays go the other way like the Lavert Hill holding call or the dropped touchdown in the end where Nico(the first read) literally gets fucking tackled in the corner and no call and we’re having a different convo this morning. One thing for sure though, Jim Harbaugh is the right coach for this program. I’m officially back on board. For the first time I saw a different fire on the road out of this team, it was our finest hour. To everyone saying the season is over, fuck you and stop watching this team you’re not needed or wanted as a Michigan fan. The team that played yesterday can absolutely win out and beat OSU. As posted earlier, there are games left to be played and PSU could absolutely lose two games and OSU could theoretically lose to Wiscy. If not a Big Ten title this team can still win out and go to the Rose Bowl. Proud of this team, I love this team. Can’t end this thread without mentioning Shea. I’ve personally been critical of him. He played like a warrior last night. I’ve never seen a Michigan Qb other than Brady lead our team back like that, he should’ve earned everyone’s respect and trust as the starter going forward.

so would that be an even darker blue?

agree with the sentiments of the OP.  a real team showed and played very hard.  not flawless, but very hard in an extremely tough environment.  if i were ND, i'd have switched from defcon 4 to defcon 2 after last night.

who is going to the ND game?

You are claiming this to be Michigan’s finest hour? They did lose the game.

Lots of people really excited because UM showed some toughness on the road and made it a game.

Bottom line is this is year 5. This moral victory crap is embarrassing. You now are on board with Harbaugh? Why? Thet LOST. Again.

It is just that, when you boil it down, we are watching kids become men.  That is what college and college sports is all about.  It cannot be overstated how much of a hole they were in last night.  21-0 in the second in front of the most difficult atmosphere in the country, refs against them from the jump, and NOBODY giving them a shot.

The resolves the players showed last night, time after time, was remarkable.  I am a proud Michigan fan this morning.  Sometimes you don’t win.  That happens.  And to a player, they all knew that second half was a long shot.  Look no further than their uniforms.  Torn and tattered, ripped and dirty.  Literally crying on the sidelines.  That was one hell of an effort, and they have all my respect for it.

Last night was the beginning.  I don’t envy ND, MSU or OSU.  Those Michigan men are coming for them.

After watching what transpired last night, I am regaining some faith and belief in what Harbaugh is doing.  It looks to me that he has decided that he is going to use his considerable influence and long “leash” he has at Michigan to do what is necessary to make Michigan’s offense modern to REALLY compete.  I don’t think the struggles we have seen are a surprise to him, nor do I think any longer that his stoic press conferences are “cluelessness” but instead just kind of a defense mechanism to some heat he knew he was going to take in making this change.

We lost the game last game last night, but I SAW speed in space.  I know what they are going for, and I saw it happen against one of the best defenses in the country.  If they learned as much as it looked like they did, and the staff can actually stay together, they really could put something scary together.  And they have the QBs in the pipeline to do it.  Last night was a heartbreaker but my popcorn is ready for the rest of this season and the upcoming ones.

"Bottom line is this is year 5"

What is that supposed to mean? We're not supposed to lose anymore? Because apart from a poor first quarter, in part due to calls, we outplayed them. We were the better team. We were a drop away from sending this game into O.T. or even winning outright in 4 quarters. The team played well. I think we turned a corner that all of us were hoping they would. Sure we lost, there were plays on both sides of the ball that could have been better, but all in all I liked what I saw despite the loss.

So you're saying "Yes. Year 5 means we shouldn't ever lose anymore."

Michigan didn't just lose a stinker to a bad team, they lost by a TD in a prime time White Out against #7 Penn State due in significant part to officiating and one dropped pass. A lot of teams would've lost that game no matter their coaches tenure.

I don’t get how anyone thinks a good counter argument to “Michigan should be able to win at least one game like this by Harbaugh’s fifth year” is “so you think Michigan should never lose?”

To say “sometimes you lose” implies that Michigan sometimes wins. They don’t. And they haven’t for some time. And that’s why people are upset with the coaches.

Michigan beat B1G champ Penn State by 40 points in 2016. Won three consecutive big games, Wisconsin/PSU/MSU, just last year. But if you define important games as those in which Michigan loses, yeah, they never seem to pull one out.

I agree that it feels like Michigan is way overdue to pull an upset in a big spot (mostly due to OSU), but to say they never win a big game is reactionary.

I get the moral victory part, it’s better than folding like a cheap tent.  However, you lose me at “this team can win out and beat OSU”.  MSU = PSU,  they are very beatable.  Who knows how good ND is but they are definitely better than PSU and OSU is far better than any other team on the schedule.  UM hasn’t shown they can hang with a ND let alone OSU.

A lot of teams would have lost that game. But they would not have been blown out by Wisconsin, and had a death fight against Army, MTSU, and Illinois. Sometimes you lose. This is a veteran offense with a ton of NFL talent. They just haven't been good.

Maybe now they will have a good showing in games going forward. But if you thought this is what you would see by this time of Harbaugh's tenure, you have seriously low expectations.

This isn't a video game.  We're not on Dynasty mode.  Programs don't automatically follow an upward trajectory.

But we are much better than we were pre-Harbaugh.  Think about 2014 again.  We were 5-7.  Minnesota blew us out at home.  Rutgers beat us.  Maryland beat us.  We've come a long way from that point, to where fans are pissed that we lost to a top-10 team on the road by one score.

That's why I'm anti-FIRE HARBAUGH. It's super unclear you're going to improve off of a staff that currently has you as a 9-10 win, top 7-15 program. Would we like to be better? Of course, but I happen to think the likelihood of getting better is much higher with the current staff than starting over and rolling the dice with a new guy. I don't know who is a plausible name that is clearly an improvement

Everyone who expects us to be clicking along In year 5 doesn’t seem to understand the human element in changing offenses. College athletes are slow to process major, ultra-complicated changes. Winning isn’t automatic, and changing coaching staffs and systems is a process that takes time.
Translation: this isn’t year 5; it is year 1 with Gaddis. We’ll get there and last night was an important step.

Sorry OP. This is a message board, where your level and intensity of misery and bitching is validation of you as a fan.

Everything you wrote is spot on but you were going to get roasted for it.

I am unwavering in my support for Harbaugh. I can’t believe that after demanding that Carr be fired and seeing what replaced him to demanding that Rodriguez be fired only to see what replaced him that there are still fans who aren’t embarrassed to be the one trick pony who can only express their disappointment by calling for a head coach to be fired.

Hell, so many said it can’t get worse than with Pep Hamilton, right?

Harbaugh realized that he needed to move on from Drevno and he did, Hamilton and he did, and I wonder if he gets to the point soon that he makes the same realization about Don Brown, unless he straight up tells his coordinator that unless “x” is happening, quit this madness of safeties at the line and in man coverage that they cannot physically do.

I'm with you except for beating OSU.  Don't see it happening, but the team played their guts out, and gave us a reason to be proud of them.  If they don't get screwed by the officials in the first half, they win last night

The season is over!..we are looking at 8-4 or 7-5 and ONCE AGAIN not one thing is going to be accomplished...JH is NOT THE RIGHT person for the program..JH couldnt win a big game if his career depended on it..his tenure is turning out to be a HUGE disappointment

We have a real one in McCrone folks. I have a ton more confidence about ND next week after last night. Love all my Michigan fan brothers and sisters. Last night hurts... but we will continue loving this team.

The Wisconsin game utterly reshaped this entire season.  That game showed that the issues we saw in the MTSU and Army games were real, and would have to be worked through.  If it didn't show you that the season was no longer about the CFP, then you know nothing about football and should stick to watching.  It reset the entire season.

There has been growth in the offense each week since.  It's still not as consistent as everyone would like, and its still not firing on all cylinders.  But now it appears that the players are buying into it, and giving a lot more effort than we saw earlier.  Growth.

Wisconsin pushed this train back to ground zero during the season, and that sucks.  But it's starting now, finally, to move forward again.  If you can't see that, and appreciate it for what it is, go watch Alabama.

My biggest takeaway from last night was that the team fought their asses off.  Shea was straight ballin' and making plays while being under a lot of pressure all night.  The officiating was hot garbage.  The impact of those 3 huge calls/non-calls is vast.  We looked like the better team when the game ended and the box score shows as much.

I'm not expecting to win the B1G, nor do I have much aspiration for a big time bowl game.  My goals for this team are to beat ND, beat MSU and see what happens when they play OSU.  Last night was a positive showing for this team.  Tough loss but headed in the right direction.

Agree across the board. Well said. As frustrating as last night was (at times), I felt more proud about how the team handled adversity than I have in recent memory.

On a side note, what the hell was up with our nameplates ripping off left and right last night?!? It looked like shit, and Jordan brand is supposed to be "elite."
