I think you're missing on this one. He had good feet, great power, and moved to the second level well. He was sloppy at times, slow out of his stance once or twice, and didn't always stay engaged after popping people. But the latter is a criticism you can level at almost any OL if you watch enough reps (Ruiz was much worse in that game, for example). We haven't had a guard with his type of power in a long, long time. The weight loss showed the commitment. He's a no-doubt starter on opening day, barring injury.

Agree completely on the spring game. Trying not to get down on him over one glorified scrimmage - I trust the hype was real.

Just like Speight wasn't as bad as he played that day. But I didn't see much from Onwenu at all...here's hoping being in better shape and a summer full of lifting has him read to be the road grater we'd hoped for.

Speight isn't as bad as he played in the spring game ... or the ohio state game ... or the Iowa game.  Unfortunately a lot of people are basing Speight on his first 5 games in 2016.  The last half of the season Speight was, at best, an average QB ... and worse than average in the games listed above.  Peters has all the tools, maybe more.

I wouldn't be so vague as to write or say, "The last half of the season..."

He played 12 games; the last 6 were MSU, Illinois, Maryland, and then the three losses. He was damn good against Maryland and Illinois, and he made some great throws at MSU.

But you do bring up a good point about too much emphasis placed on the early part of the season. As I posted before, he threw 18 TD passes last season, but almost 40% of that was in the first two games when he threw 7 TDs against Hawaii and UCF. After that, against Colorado, FSU, and the B1G schedule, 11 in 10 games and he had a lot where he averaged less than 10 ypc. We can have the chicken or the egg discussion about that; were some of the running game issues a result of a QB few feared of attacking over the top? Or were some downfield struggles the result of a running game that still hasn't risen to UM standards?

And in response to the "Peters has all the tools..." comment, we're actually not sure of that. But I am sure that I saw Wilton Speight, both on TV and from the in stands make NFL throws and make NFL reads. He needs to be more consistent and be better when he doesn't have a perfectly formed pocket.

I thought Onwenu was a lock too, especially based on some of the coaches comments.  I'm not the least bit worried that it's not settled as RG, as that probably just means Ruiz is the real deal at either center or guard.  From all reports, Ruiz is one of the most college ready lineman we've gotten in recent history.

FWIW, Webb stated on Scout that Jeter has really made strides and is the 2nd best freshman/likely to contribute after Solomon on the D line. He also backed up the Devin Bush hype train. And he said Tarik Black is the first WR mentioned as standing out.

He said on twitter a few days ago hes playing 3 tech. So that probably isnt permanent. Probably means more that hes the 5th or 6th lineman right now and hes ahead of the other true WDE (Vilain, Kwity)

He's 1 year older but he played QB in high school while the other guys played CB.

Not sure if he played both ways extensively in HS, but regardless, he doesn't have THAT much more experience. Besides, they all have the same amount under Don Brown. Washington's redshirt year was under Durkin.

Troubling little snippet on McDoom but honeslty not too surprising. Hopefully he can reemerge and his whole career isn't jet sweeps as a true freshman

Our WR corps could be scary good for the next few years. Add in the TEs and I feel sorry for any opposing secondary.

Also sad to see Simeon Smith go. He was definitely the PWO that this board was the most excited for.

Perry was always ahead of him. I'd be disappointed if Nate Johnson passed him since McDoom got all of the snaps last year.

That said Martin is the real deal and Schoenle is was getting Kovacs type praise there for a moment. Martin is going to shoot up the depth chart and Schoenle may be right there with him.

I still think there's a place and snaps for McDoom, but he may be set for another year of jet sweeps and fake jet sweeps until Grant Perry is gone. That said, Perry is only a junior.

I'd love to see McDoom more involved with special teams...but if he can't catch a kickoff or punt or if he's not able to read blocks extremely well, it's not worth it. Those are more important than speed. At least for the first 30-40 yards of a return.

solid status in almost all of the D spots with essentially 10 starters known (and expect Hill to grab the other CB spot. IMO, the #1 need is real depth in the DL to protect the starters for the home stretch. The secondary will get its bearings, especially with Kinnel directing traffic and so many elite athletes. LBs could be great. I don't have the same confidence in the lack of experience littering the O depth chart. In JH we trust.

Overall still no surprises...the last depth chart from the spring is still pretty locked in. This next week is a big one, then on to prep for Florida.

At one point, do college coaches typically "lock in" their starters / rotation and pivot into dedicated game planning for week 1? With 29 practices (is that # right?), do they usually want "competition" for the first 14-15 before spending the latter half focusing on actual prep for opponents? I'm curious what the "norm" is...

Coaches have been game planning forever, but in terms of the question...I think they start doing a few "game things" for the upcoming opponent before the Monday of game week, but that is certainly when they truly lock in.

I've always seen coaches basically treat it like a bye week. Maybe do a few key things 2 weeks out that you KNOW you want to run or you want to stop. However, a lot of focus on yourself, fundamentals, and getting better individually. Then the week of is game week.

I'd certainly be interested to know how we're treating it since it's Florida and not Central Michigan or Toledo or in the case of last year, Hawaii.

I'm sure last year we could've skipped all things Hawaii until game week, I wonder if we change that this season. UMBig11, if you're lurking...

The posters above were pretty spot on. I played in football in college, first 3 weeks of camp are all self install. You basically go through the entire playbook from start to finish. Each day you get 10-15 new plays and you build off of it. Usually there will be 2 or 3 full contact scrimages during that time that will determine playing time/dept chart. Week 3, your 1st/ 2nd team is now for the most part set, and the 3rd/4th stringers are now your scouts. Youre still installing some of your plabook but everything you run and practice is against "floridas defense/offense now. The last week you run your regular season routine. Basically you start working specifically on game one 2 weeks before, but the coaches have had their gameplan since the spring. And the older guys have already been given film of florida to watch over the summer.
