Moderator Action Sticky

Submitted by Zone Left on

Brian has requested that instead of deleting each individual comment in the Moderator Action Sticky, that we instead just create a new thread. It takes hours of less time, preserves the comments for future explanations, and just clears things up faster.

You'll notice that the previous thread is now locked, and will slowly fade back into darkness. For the time being, the link from the Useful Stuff menu will point to the wrong location. We're working on a fix for that.

This thread is an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

NOTE: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted.

Might I inquire why "The aneurysm of fandom" got pulled? Yes it wasnt going to go the way the OP hoped but speaking from first hand experience that's not always a bad thing long-term. I remember early on in my tenure posting a similar type story expecting all sorts of mad blog love and when I got the opposite reaction I was definitely educated that the masses here thought differently than i had expected from a sports blog.

Denard wins NCAA cover

As awesome as it would be for Denard Robinson to win this on a daily basis, yesterday's thread on this subject is still on the front page.

Question:

If I post a semi-weekly diary titled "Your Week in OT" and provide quality content, will it get deleted? I'd like to post 5-10 news stories per diary that would be of interest (no politics, no religion). For whatever reason, the preview post doesnt work, so it would be formatted better. For example:

Killer Ukranian Dolphins on the Loose

- So... legitimate media outlets are reporting that there is a chance that gun toting, shank carrying dolphins have escaped from a Ukranian military base. Basically, picture Echo the Doplhin meets Duke Nukem. The Ukranian government denies these claims, but who wouldn't? The only thing more dangerous than terrorist with nukes is a pod of gangsterized doplhins roaming the oceans with a vendetta. I give the story FOUR out of FIVE fakes, only because the plausibility is there due to the evidence that the international community is engaging in the practice of arming (flippering?) sea creatures to do their dirty work.

My take would be that you're fine if you tread carefully with the topics up until the end of August. Afterwards, the no OT rule goes into effect. Just keep the spirit of diary vs board post in mind. Make sure it's not just a brief link to funny stories or it'll get bumped to the board until the mods who are actually worthwhile (not me) get sick of it.

Although this was technically the first thread on the subject, the second one has the photo outright and tells you all about Uniformz today that you will need to know.

Wisconsin snowflakes

....as well as...

Michigan vs. Wisconsin B-Ball Snowflakes and Post Game Open Thread

The first one was user-requested, and the last snowflake thread already has over 150 replies to about 50 for M-Wolverine's (no offense, just trying to condense the discussion). However, as a reward for being the first person to technically create the thread, M-Wolverine's title gets to be on the remaining thread.

Seriously guys you locked BOTH the "fantatics and the sliver linings" posts? Why on earth for? There is zilch on the board right now for new content unless we want to discuss what we will be drinking tomorrow for God's sake and as I see it, there isnt one comment in either thread that looks offensive or inflamatory in any way.

They were both fairly meaningless and innocous posts that generated conversation and hence, eyeballs, on the page. I truly dont understand what prompted a lock on any level.

If you're editing a thread title for content, here's the guidelines. As always use your discretion-- we have no hard and fast rules. In general try to respect the user's content while serving the board. Err on the side of reader convenience.

1. Try to leave the original poster's content alone as much as possible. If you need to add information put it below and note who do it.

2. If you edit the title to reflect changing news don't put your name in there.

3. Note your changes in the mod sticky.

"OT- WALKING DEAD THREAD"

This was the first one created, but the discussion seems to have started in the other thread. I am going to go ahead and leave the second one up for that reason.

Funny video, but Kate Upton threads are on a short leash lately. If she's talking about Michigan or makes it to Auburn Hills or something, fine. Other than that, no threads on her, especially coming from the style section.

obama bracket

Some tried to keep it going, which was great, but the search for nice things continued as some comments took the thread towards a potentially irrevocable downward turn.

Usually they're not that annoying, but tonight he messed up my routine for modding comments. I won't joke about signing him up for spam, but I wish I could at this point; deleting ten comments and having to go through ten threads to see new comments by hand is not fun, especially for a night like tonight.

Morning Cup With Sparty

The tribe has more or less spoken on this one - it has been said before, but within the context of a Michigan sports blog, stories about how Spartan fans react to things generally do not have a huge audience.

Without some type of on topic connection, news about specific bands/authors/whatever probably don't make good board posts. If the board gets slow, a thread about what albums posters are looking forward to, good books, ect. can all be fun, though.

I've pointed this out before but nothing has been done about it. In this thread:

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/thj-interview-jim-rome-today

The comment that kills the entire thread has "<iframe width="420"" as its title. You need to disallow the less than symbol in the title or at the very least convert it to "<" so that it will display properly.

If you are able to access the page to alter the comment, you should change the title and it will fix the rest of the post. If you can't access it through the other page, this link might work for you. I'm not sure that the mods use the same edit page as everyone else, but if they do, this should work.

....and it is fixed. Posting in that thread may now continue as scheduled.

EDIT UNRELEATED TO THIS REPLY: Not really worth another post in the Sticky, but "Merrill/Trouba will "take a few days" to decide on Pro's" was removed - duplicate thread, discussion already beginning in the first one.

OT: OSU's Region

The masses have spoken on this one, I believe. Conspiracy theories and statements not backed with evidence on this board are almost guaranteed, at least historically, to generate very little useful discussion (although a few users did provide very good analysis of where the OP erred in this case) and sometimes do not end terribly well.

It are riot in East Lansing?

The answer to the OP's question was in the thread - the creator of the site has long since graduated, therefore the status of East Lansing is, perhaps rightly, uncertain.

In an effort to procrastinate, I was flipping through some old posts on the HoF, and came accross this one:

http://mgoblog.com/content/which-rodriguez-gets-sword-size-his-torso-and-spiky-hair

I opened it and chrome has told me a few times that the page contains malware (i refreshed it to make sure it wasn't just a fluke). My browser hasn't found any other problems with the site, and given no other warnings, except for this one page.

Deleted for the comment flamewar, not the OP itself. Too bad it came to that, the Thanksgiving and Christmas (for the record I'm not Christian) threads are some of my favorites, but apparently Easter is not conducive to nice things for a sports blog.

justingoblue

and getting into the mod sticky from there is a pain, so here's me saying that I deleted it and why. Threads "calling out" other users are a pretty bad idea; ZL defines mod work above as something like "preserving the general level of calm" on the board, and that wasn't headed anywhere but down into flames.

"It was crazy..."

This one is coming down, for although it was crazy, and I did actually have a sub, the quote in isolation isn't a standalone topic and probably could have been presented in one of the many other discussion threads.

"Mike Rice Fired"

The man deserves to be fired, then fired for being fired, and so on ad infinitum, but it is indeed old news now.

EDIT: Also, duplicate thread from this morning - "OT: Auburn University and Gene Chizik about to be charged with major violations". The link was to a different source, but the same story is on the front page still. That being said, there is a certain intrigue in seeing Gene Chizik's credibility burned to ashes and then to have some attempt to set the ashes ablaze.

New commit - Brady Pallante out of Florida

As much we like to have commits eager to come to Ann Arbor (multiple times, if they so choose), the "Hello" thread is still on the front page in this case.

...as well as...

Brandon Triche Trash Talk

I suggest that Brandon Triche take Horford up on his offer of a lovely tea and talk of matchup issues.

--------------------------------------------

Rather than create a new post per se - April 6th removals:

Fab Five-Chris Webber

I think the tribe has spoken on this one - it is a discussion that has been had multiple times here and as recently as a couple days ago in the "open letter" thread. It didn't seem like this one was going to provide any new insight.

Some general cleanup:

i present to you doug anderson (not ot, final 4 week)

This one is buried now thanks in part to pre-game and post-game threads from yesterday, but it was on the front page less than 48 hours ago.

Also this one, as wonderful and uplifting as this story is:

"Jack Hoffman (7-yr. old cancer patient) scores TD in Nebraska Spring Game"

This was also buried in the post-game euphoria, but it was on the board yesterday evening.

And this one...

Man Card in Jeopardy

This one really wasn't going anywhere and, in general, random tidbits from one's stream of consciousness do not make great board topics, at least historically. There have been few known exceptions to this, insofar as I am aware.

...and this...

MSU schadenfreude is amazing right now

There's already one thread, of course, which we'll keep. Even though we've said before that how Spartan fans react to things is generally not a high-interest topic here, one thread today will not hurt, I would think.

Seth

User marlon went over the edge in attacking non-alum fans in the Sparty schadenfreude thread. Typically that's a ban, but 4-year member so Bolivia instead. Points will return in 4 years; call it an education.

Not up to board standards.

I am not drunk or on any substance, but I feel like tonight was a conspiracy

If someone wants to make a thread presenting evidence of a conspiracy, go for it. Conjecture that requires a "not drunk or high" disclaimer probably shouldn't get posted, though.

F**KING KENPOM

A little general cleanup this morning.

Although there is no official snowflake thread yet, this thought should perhaps sit inside it when it does go up on the board.

Also, a little condensation, to avoid multiple "Thank You" threads:

"Thank you 2012-2013 basketball team" and "Thank You Michigan Basketball" were taken down in favor of the larger discussion in the "MMB Appreciation Thread". Nothing offense or out of order in this obviously, just trying to minimize overlapping threads, so size will win out here.
