Moderator Action Sticky

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on

Brian has requested that instead of deleting each individual comment in the Moderator Action Sticky, that we instead just create a new thread. It takes hours of less time, preserves the comments for future explanations, and just clears things up faster.

You'll notice that the previous thread is now locked, and will slowly fade back into darkness. For the time being, the link from the Useful Stuff menu will point to the wrong location. We're working on a fix for that.

This thread is an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

NOTE: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted.

New Thread.

I couldn't leave this one up - its interesting but it is much too personal in nature (the recruit in question could easily be discovered through research).  Eeven though the OP insinuates that the information is coming directly from the recruit's mother, MGoLiability is not cool.

I took 100,000 points from him instead of caving him because I think it's funnier that way. But someone else can beat him over the head with the Banhammer if they want - I won't be offended.

Generally, first in time, first in right.  However, I came up with a solution all should be happy with since the latter in time had a closer link to Michigan football in its title . . .

I was actually just making what I thought was an innocuous joke with really no intended political subtext; if it was making fun of anyone, it would be people who are incapable of interpreting nuance, whether that be political or otherwise.  I thought utilizing phrases like "drinking drugs" and "protected sex" would emphasize this point.  Apparently I was incorrect.  Sorry to have offended Jon06's apparently (overly) delicate political sensibilities.  I will remove myself from his lawn post-haste.

Valenti is covered under the No Sharp rule. If you live within the WTKA radius and/or it's not NPR's telethon month there is no excuse for listening to Valenti. He's just a troll.

(Not that you wanted or needed my approval.)

This is a judgment call on your part; one in which I think the MGoJudgment has been very wisely employed.

There's a very good argument that Valenti is "more Sharp than Sharp," insofar as Valenti & Co., don't really break any real news and they don't do the kind of investigative or beat reporting that the papers have done.  All that they do is recycle opinion and annoyance.

For anybody who doesn't like Valenti, this is really the best policy.

For anybody who likes Valenti, all you have to do is listen to him, call in, and talk about him with you friends, argue with him and about him, and post threads about him where you can; in that, you'd be doing him the greatest favor.  You are fulfilling the sportstalk radio business model.

Not permissible.  However, if you had somehow worked Charles Woodson's name into the thread somehow, I probably would have let it stand because its a pretty cool news story (bro).

More seriously, is it the off season or not? Last year it was after the "season", so we went to a bowl it extended. This year Brian said "till after Ohio State" (which I only remember, because in his announcement thread I asked him the same thing...wait, not till after the bowl game?)  Maybe he didn't want to jinx it. But there were mixed messages. I can live with either.  And haven't posted any OT, because I think the season is still going on (though I luv me some OT). But I can't blame people for not being sure. Including the mods.

We are still getting new threads at a strong pace and traffic has remained up. After bowl things can go back to offseason rules except for signing day week. Usual rules still apply: -Kill trolls -No politics -No Sharp or Valenti -We are not Craigslist (or a kiosk) -No OT except local pro teams and major sports news -College sports and Michigan anything are on topic -When in doubt err toward what's best for the majority of readers who came for good info and discussion on Michigan, not always the rules We rely on your discretion. And thank you guys so hard!!!

I hear you, but a MLB contract signing is not really major sports news in my opinion.  Its not even the largest contract ever signed - its up there, but both of A-Rod's contracts were are/were more lucrative.  But moderating threads like these is very subjective so its understandable that we may disagree.  At the end of the day, I have to make a judgment call.  And, as you can see, many of my judgment calls are not very popular, at least with a few Users.

He's the best player in one of the 4 major sports.  Per the MGoBoard FAQ

"We will let pro sports topics slide even during football season."

How are major sports events so detrimental to the board?  Right now all we have to talk about is Hoke attending a lecture and a spattering of recruiting newsbits that get discussed in Ace's posts.

I think we can be a little more leinent right now...

Hey BISB.

You can probably unlock that Gibbons thread, as the Ann Arbor Chronicle relates the UM Board of Regents Meeting in which a Professor levels the accusation against Gibbons.

[Something bad about Gibbons goes here].

I know it's public record, but I don't like publishing this stuff. If it gets picked up more publicly, I'll let it go. [zl]

I agree -- BiSB acted quickly (which you must do in this situation), but I believe that it was the wrong decision.  These are published by a reputable source, and there are statements online from a pathology professor (Smith) which refer to the official police report. (17 November 2011)

I also agree that it is a topic worthy of discussion. However, there appears to be little in the way of information to discuss, at least, official information.

I will also add that if the board is a place wherein we are free to discuss allegations made against players/coaches of other teams, then we ought to be able to hold those same discussions with regard to allegations made against players/coaches on our own team.

I was mostly trying to assuage your fear that it was "libel".

Quoting a police report clearly doesn't qualify.

I'd agree that it's a touchy suspect ripe for shit to go horribly. But, as LastHoke points out, if this site is going to tolerate, iirc, a 300+ comment thread about Appling and Payne, then this may rate.

I guess I can see why it would be a good idea to lock the thread (the title is a bit iffy), but at the very least keep the link up.

If I'm playing devil's advocate here...there was a very large thread with regard to a similar incident by members of the MSU basketball team that no one had a problem keeping open.

EDIT: Ah, chitown beat me to it.

Yeoman

...might itself be a topic worthy of discussion. Smith has also addressed the A2 City Council and the Washtenaw County Commissioners about the heavily redacted police response to his FOIA request.

http://annarborchronicle.com/2011/02/24/council-absences-delay-some-bus…

Whatever the decision, I thought the thread title was unnecessarily provocative. If discussion of this is going to be focused on its impact on player performance, I'd rather not.

Clearly the media outlets in town are aware of this.  As are many officials (letters to Coleman and the Mayor was present when Smith addressed the city council).  I might suggest we freeze the topic until some jouranlist gets his hands on the report and runs an article on it (or runs an article on how DPS won't hand the report over). As it stands we're clearly not in college wide coverup mode here and every thing written so far is "he said, she said".

I'm all for preserving ye olde guarde of mgobloggers, but HisDudeness has got to go.

The Gibbons thread was just fine until he interjected with his usual "Hoke sux, RR rulez!" shtick, causing the whole thing to devolve into a mess.

For the past six months he has existed only to troll, and provoke flamewars.

Any sort of goodwill he has built up over the years has been used up IMO, and I think most of the board shares that sentiment.
