Mo Wagner's stats over his last six games

Submitted by Tate on

It's nice to have a finally have a big that can open up the floor for us. Part of the reason we are able to get off so many 3PA is because defenses now have to check him in the middle.

He is by far the best player we have, yet he plays a reserve's amount of minutes.  He should be getting 15+ shots a game, and be the focal point of our offense.

I knew I liked that crazy German.

But I'd still like to see some high to low post looks in the paint when both Wagner and Wilson are in.  If we're not going to drive to the basket, we've got to at least look to pass inside more.

I really hope this is something they're working on in practice. Wagner and even Donnal seem to get into good post position fairly often and our guards just seem unwilling or unable to make an entry pass into them. Wagner especially has looked rather adept at spinning off opposing bigs or finding other ways to get good lucks out of post up situations.

He also has the ability to step back and shoot, and take his man off the dribble.  He's a really tough matchup for opposing defenses.

I was at the game last night (with a few dozen others, or so)

Mo was impressive. If he's going to become a focal point for the offense, though, his FT percentage will need to get better.

He battles on the boards so that number is not fully indicative of the effort. Also, he is still only averging @ 20 min a game. Boards are inkd of like RBI's, they are an cumulative stat where as scoring can be high volume in a short period because you can be targted when you are in.

Also, Beilein uses his gaurds to do a lot of the defensive rebounding. He's basically being asked to box out and let the others clean up on the defensive end. On the offensive boards, he and Wilson are putting up a good fight.

Got to stop his love affair with Donnal and let him play through it all. Fouls, lapses in defense, whatever. If there's any hope for this season, Wagner needs to be playing most of the minutes at the 4/5.

How to play with 3 or 4 fouls if Beilein keeps immediately yanking him.

Personally, I think it's silly that he gets pulled early for 1 foul. That's happened multiple times, and I don't see it happen with any other player.

I don't know what it is, but there's something between the two that's not working and Donnal is just in coach's good graces.

He's been looking pretty good. Hope he continues to improve and stays solid throughout B1G play. There's a lot of good big men in the conference he'll have to face.

Pretty amazing to think that the two most important players seem to be our bigs - Wagner and Wilson.  I think it is because they actually are a match-up problem for most teams (UCLA excluded).  I think the Big Ten is fairly mediocre this year and if those two play their roles up to their potentia this team could have a solid season.

I also think Robinson and Donnal are in their proper roles.  Heading into the next two body bag games and into the conference season this is what needs to happen for this team to reach its potential:

  • Keep the bigs churning - duh
  • Get Rahk's confidence and aggression back
  • Find minutes for Simpson to grow and contriibute
  • Run the offensive system - no hero ball, find the open man, ball screen, etc.

Is Mo someone that will stick around 4 years? I've given up hope that we can make a deep tourney run this year, and next year we lose our top 2 scorers, but 2 years from now we could be really good with seniors Mo and Wilson up front. Obviously that's long term projecting, but a team of Simpson, Matthews, Poole, Wilson and Mo might be pretty dangerous. Not sure if Mo will go pro early or head back overseas though. I think next season he will have to carry the load as a 15+ ppg scorer.

Mo reminds me of McGary somewhat. A raw talent that slowly comes into his own and just starts taking games over. He looks so much more comfortable this year and it is showing in his play. He could be a giant waiting to wake.
