Thanks for an amazing season Mikey! Good luck with future endeavors within and without the sport of basketball!

I'm gonna miss your impeccable hair :(

I can't remember a better grad transfer in Michigan sports (maybe I'm forgetting someone obvious).

Keep betting on yourself indeed Mike Smith

Charles Matthews definitely won us a few games in the 2018 regular season and tourney when our offense got super stagnant (Montana 1st round, FSU Elite 8, Loyola Final 4). Also was great to have as an absolute lockdown defender against the opponent's best perimeter player. I think his impact gets underrated. Honestly if we have a Matthews to throw on Juzang and get a bucket in a sloppy rock fight of a game, we win vs. UCLA.

Well, we know he is buddies with Jimmy Butler. I wonder if there is a place on Jimmy Butler's team for a guy from Michigan who outperforms expectations and makes it big in the NBA...

I selfishly wish he were returning. But I'm glad he was on the team this year. They presumably wouldn't have had the success that they did without him.

On a maybe funny note, I often record the games and then start them late. Konwing this, my mom texted me near the start of each game this season to give me an update on Smith's hairstyle. He was her favorite player this year.

Thank you for everything you did for this team. Not sure what his NBA future looks like, but if nothing else he'll find an overseas opportunity. And having degrees from both Michigan and an Ivy League school pretty much ensures he's going to be set for life no matter what he wants to do post-basketball.

Go get paid, good sir.

He exceeded expectations here times about 10.  Was a great PG offensively, a little bit of a liability on defense, but he improved as the season went on.  We were so lucky to find someone like him.

Well-seasoned PGs are not always so easy to find and we got one that helped lead us to the Elite 8. I rarely recall him coming off the floor after Livers got hurt. Always felt comfortable with him quarterbacking our starting 5. Hope next year's PGs grow up fast.

Best of luck!

I'm not sure that he will be an NBA guard, but he will make some money playing the game for a while.  Smart to get on with his life if that's what he wants to do.  He's already been in college for 5 years, not everyone wants to be a career student.

He has a bachelor's from an Ivy League school and a master's from Michigan. Even if basketball runs its course for him, his non-basketball career options are probably better than what a lot of folks dream about. There's a lot wrong with college athletics in America, but Mike Smith is an example of what's right with college athletics in America.

We were lucky to have him.

Best hair in Michigan basketball history, and was the most important addition to this past year's team. We were lucky to have him and can't wait to see him succeed at the next level.

Good Luck to Mike!

wasn't sure what he was all about coming into the season, and now and am super disappointed to see him moving on after only one year.

Wish Michigan could have gotten him into the Final Four, but still the Elite Eight is pretty damn good considering where he had been at Columbia.

I wish him a ton of luck.  I find it hard to believe he will be drafted, but hopefully he at least gets a shot in the G-League.

he was a pleasant surprise this year (much like the entire team) and he would have been an iconic hero had his last shot taken at UM dropped.

Good luck to him.  Makes sense that he'd want to move on; he's already got one degree and (I assume) not far from completing his masters at UM.

Thought he was instrumental in how far this team went and I wish him luck.

Thanks for being one of the keys to a great season, Mike!! Best of luck!

Team-wise, this is a bummer, but it just means that Juwan will have to find another diamond in the portal. Hopefully he can do that again. If we get Chaundee and Eli back, we could be defense-focused next year. But winning is winning.
