Michigan will only play MSU once in 2017-18

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The game everyone wants to see, which will most likely be a top-15 game. Ridiculous.

Michigan-MSU and Purdue-IU should be happening twice a year, every year.

Here's is the B1G slate for 2017-18 for MBB

Home & Road
Purdue, Maryland, Ohio State, Northwestern, Iowa

Home only
Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Rutgers

Road only
Wisconsin, Michigan State, Penn State, Nebraska

Of course Michigan has to play in East Lansing. I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.

So we get to play at Spartan Stadium back to back years in football AND don't get a return date in basketball this year.

That is a pretty brutal Big Ten schedule TBH.

God I hate Delany.

This isn't a surprise.

In the 2015-2016 basketball season, MSU had to come to Ann Arbor without a return date in East Lansing, so it's not unexpected that it's flipped.

With so many teams in the Big Ten now, it's going to happen every so often (and has been for a while). We only met once in both 2008 and 2009 as well.

It would be on the road.

I mean when it comes to getting fucked over by the B1G scheduling-wise we have no equal.  And funny how it ALWAYS seems to involved MSU and we ALWAYS get royally screwed in the deal.

If only we were a nationally recognized school with an internationally valued academic and athletic department like they have maybe this wouldnt happen so often.  If only we were considered one of the elite schools in the B1G and the world this wouldnt happen so often.  If only we were a "cash cow" to the conference bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars in broadcasting and merchandising like them this wouldnt happen so often.

If only.

I don't see the point of outrage here. We got a single home game against them two years ago.

Single plays for this game and IU-Purdue are stupid. Those are games everyone wants to see.

Can you imagine if they did Duke-UNC once a year?

We also got our single home game against OSU back last year for the road game we had to play them in way back in 2013-14.

First time happened in 1997.  But back then, the schools got together to schedule a non-conference game at the other school's arena.  I wonder if we could get rid of the game Alabama A&M to schedule a non-conf game against MSU.

I had to fact-check this because I thought it happened more recently.  But in 2016, we only played them at Crisler, and lost badly.  You could argue that since we were one of the last four in, another loss at EL could've kept us out the tournament that year.

So I guess, we're even.

...and we were coming off back to back first round exits as low seeds, and if memory serves, sparty was just coming off losing Respert, who put on a show against us which I remember to this day.

And considering they both made the NIT in 97, they weren't exactly far apart talent wise.

I don't know what happened, but I went to the Palace when we beat Arizona and they went on to win the title that year.  We looked good in that game are were in the Top 5 at that time.

But you can't lose four in a row in February, which is what we did.  And folks wonder how we could so easily fire Fisher, instead of waiting to hear his side.  Look at how we closed that regular season.  It was a microcosm of the post-Fab Five years: Uninspired, very talented teams, playing mediocre basketball.  Fisher probably would've needed the 97-98 team to make a tournament run to keep him off the hot seat anyway.

Two times actually between 1997 and 2016.

2001-02 & 2002-03

L 44-71 at East Lansing on 1/30/2002

W 60-58 in Ann Arbor on 1/26/2003, Amaker's 1st win over them

2007-08 & 2008-09

L 62-77 at East Lansing on 1/28/2008

L 42-54 in Ann Arbor on 2/10/2009

scheduling that non-conference MSU game back then?

His initials are Warde Manuel.

After a good start, he somehow forgot to do it, and nobody called him out on it. So it stopped happening.

Don't get your hopes up for a revival now that he is AD.

And since the BT is clueless about rivalry games, we get to live with this every few years.

As Brian said: Some people are in charge of things for no reason.

This really isn't a big deal. Happens all the time. We got a home-game only with MSU a year or two ago. Ended very poorly for us, but this year we just got the short straw.

This is not news. Moving on.
