Michigan Stadium Scoreboards

Submitted by snoopblue on

Would a giant HD "Godzillatron" sized scoreboard fit with the aesthetics of Michigan Stadium? It would be cool to have the largest stadium with the largest scoreboard. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_scoreboards_in_NCAA_colleg…) Have you seen other scoreboards at other venues that would fit the Michigan Stadium look?

Hopefully we NEVER have advertising in the stadium, but what the hell else would they put on a giant screen? Retired numbers? National/Big Ten Championships? Wolverine statue on top? I'd imagine they'd keep the classic MICHIGAN STADIUM lettering on the top.

Also, what happens to the old scoreboards? They are old but they have a certain mystique to them. Maybe just leave them (fully operating) outside the stadium surrounding area?

Just something to speculate about..

As long as we are allowed to staff our own time clock like our couch burning cousins up north, I say build whatever scoreboard you want.

Well said.

But in terms of the topic at hand, as much as I love the move into the 21st century by Brandon, I don't think that our stadium needs "the largest" scoreboard in the nation. They look really small right now with the new skyboxes up, so we could definitely spiff them up and make em bigger, etc. But too big would look weird I think, just my opinion.

Now that you mention it, having the old scoreboards placed outside of the bowl on the north or south side of the stadium could be pretty cool. There could be scores or team highlights available before the game or even during. I can't wait for the scoreboards to be updated, though.

You could put the old scoreboards in yost. You might have to change it around a little bit (must say "period" not "quarter, for example), but yost could really use some replay.

Im sick and tired of people trying to ruin the beauties and traditions at Michigan Stadium by trying to modernize it...

Ha! If that's the case, the traditions were ruined when the (current) scoreboards were installed, or perhaps when things went digital, or perhaps when they started scanning tickets instead of tearing them. Let's just have a big board with some guy changing the numbers for the score. While we're at it, lets get rid of the instant replay. And hell, why should the referees be allowed to be all modern with those strange voice amplifying devices? We should also tear down the luxury boxes and get rid of the credit card/Mcard readers at the concession stands and take out the TV's so the people buying a hot dog can't see the game while they're in line. Why? Because technology is bad, it ruins the traditions of Michigan football.

I've got it! How about a 3D godzillatron and we hand out 3D glasses at every game. That way, when you watch replays, it'll be like you're actually at the game! YAY!!!

My hope would be that, whatever the scoreboards look like, they are set up to reflect sound back onto the field as the suites do. Same with the new permanent lights. Let's make the Big House even louder!

An enormous scoreboard would look completely out-of-place at Michigan Stadium, IMO. Our house has a classic look - we don't need to turn it into Blade Runner. And frankly, with no advertisements, a huge screen is completely unnecessary.

They should build something reasonably-sized that looks kinda retro. You're there to watch the game, not the scoreboard. And use bricks - everyone loves bricks.

I was thinking the boards seem too small now. Would love to see an upgrade, but solicit ideas and do it right. Love the idea of lights at the Big House..our place is already the best, and soon to be better.

I had to google godazillatron to see what everyone was talking about.
It's WAY too big to the point of absurdity.

We need a new scoreboard but just not that big.

Whichever size scoreboard goes up it's just gonna have to come back down when they decide to add the second deck end zone seats. Which is not a question of if, it's when.

Three things:

1). Whatever we do, we need to make sure that we keep it looking crisp and fresh. The paint job on the surrounding metal on the current scoreboards is losing it around the seams.

2). The new scoreboards should have a separate closed-captioning board below the video, like what the Pirates have at PNC or the Reds have at Great American Ball Park. It allows the video to be presented with captions without having the CC'ing flow over them.

3). I'd really like to make sure that the current yardage totals stay on the board. One of my favorite features of the current board.

I trust David Brandon will get this right.
