Mike Lantry, 1972
I was one of those lucky enough to have been there Saturday night. What a show - can't keep the smile off of my face. I guess the myth about the Big House being quiet is finally dispelled....my ears are still ringing.
Anyway, I was in Section 21, Row 29 around the 20 yardline, on the Michigan side of the field. Normally, I find myself watching the action on the field and only look at the scoreboard for the opccasional replay or the stats. Saturday, I found myself watching the scoreboards more than the field, not because I couldn't see what was taking place, but because the new displays are so detailed. Is this happening to anyone else?
Also, in my section, the new speakers seemed terrific. Loud and really undistorted for a large stadium.
As for the new lighting, because the lights are stretched into a horizontal line and not a tower which creates a point source of sorts, shadowing was very subtle and really minimized. Say what you want about Brandon, but the changes he has made to the Big House are spot on.
I apologize in advance as these are not the greatest pictures of the scoreboards but they are an attempt. I'm gonna try to get them in the daylight at some point. I would love to get them from the inside this year (maybe Ohio State?).
On a side note, I will be on the sidelines at the Eastern game on Saturday. Wish me luck as this will be a first for me.
From 9:45 this morning, I took these on my morning run. Drove by 20 minutes ago and looks the same...
It might be hard to see, but that maize strip on the bottom ends before the panel ends, so that is the width of the foot the the block M.
If I'm not too busy, I'll update here in the afternoon. When I drove by around 10:50 they had another blue piece hanging from a crane. Watching paint dry has never been so fun.
EDIT: About 5:20pm on Thursday:
And here's a shot of the almost completed Elbel Field Band Practice field, now turfed:
Any updates/pics from our MGoBloggers on the ground in Ann Arbor on Michigan Stadium's scoreboards steel going up?
Would a giant HD "Godzillatron" sized scoreboard fit with the aesthetics of Michigan Stadium? It would be cool to have the largest stadium with the largest scoreboard. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_scoreboards_in_NCAA_college...) Have you seen other scoreboards at other venues that would fit the Michigan Stadium look?
Hopefully we NEVER have advertising in the stadium, but what the hell else would they put on a giant screen? Retired numbers? National/Big Ten Championships? Wolverine statue on top? I'd imagine they'd keep the classic MICHIGAN STADIUM lettering on the top.
Also, what happens to the old scoreboards? They are old but they have a certain mystique to them. Maybe just leave them (fully operating) outside the stadium surrounding area?
Just something to speculate about..
I personally am holding out hope for a scoreboard on a billboard on a Motivational Poster on a T-shirt on a car window sticker. Then maybe we will have reached ridiculousness implosion. It's one game, fer chrissakes.
