So I saw this roll across my Twitter feed.....

Please let the movie be Waterboy.

You are right..Wisconsin did it for everyone. But Fresno St and Northern Illinois only did it for season ticket holders. Minnesota only did it for "donors". Some do for all, some do only for ticketholders. To rail against what you yourself said is a good idea just shows that nothing he does is viewed for the act alone anymore.

You guys sound like the same people that whined that Rich Rod wasn't a michigan man. Brandon has made some bad moves (so did Bill Martin) but this isn't one of them.

It's like the Lions special event for season ticket holders. Wanna go to a free event ? Pay up.

God, people around here love to complain about the dumbest things. It has nothing to do with football, it's not attached to any game day events, it's not even on a Saturday or even during football season! Get off your soapboxes, you goddamned whiners.

Boo-hoo, the university is doing something. Time to moan and rend our garments.

It has everything to do with football, as you must be a season ticket holder to attend. In addition, I think anyone who has too strong of an opinion either way on this topic is being unreasonable. Is it nice that the AD treated the faithful to a cool and free event at the stadium? Absolutely. Does it appear that DB is lashing back at the people who didn't renew by only offering this to season ticket holders? Again, absolutely. I think all points in this argument are valid to some degree.

He's having a hard time filling the stadium for a football game - how many people does he expect to show for a movie night? I'll give you that lashing out was probably a poor choice of phrasing, as that does seem a bit much, but not making it open to the public can certainly lead to one to question the motives behind such a decision.

Motive: how about the one I propose above?  Devoted football fans for decades, season ticket holder handed down from grandpa, wants to bring family to this event.  He and his now-crying children are turned away at the gates after driving more than an hour because thousands of local Ann Arborites - with zero interest or commitment to football - show up for a free outdoor summertime movie.  This is a hypothetical, but absolutely possible.  There would be screams from the rooftops, probably from many of the same DB bashers here, that opening it to the public was unfair and stupid.  Tears and rending of gaments.

Separately, Apples: selling out football games at $90/seat when the record has been dismal for 6 of the last 7 years.  Oranges: free movie.

I truly believe this is yet another attempt to make the higher income individuals that can actually afford season tickets feel all good and warm inside and then not blink twice when Dave approaches them for yet another donation or raises ticket prices.

Dave was a snake oil saleman with Dominos and he remains one with Michigan.

you're imprinting such a deep-seeded hate on a man you know little about (and making wild accusations about his future predicted actions).  He hasn't harmed anyone, he isn't a criminal.  It's so stunning how you ascribe such blackness to his heart.  It's not natural, his actions haven't earned this level of scorn.

well here's a season ticket holder that lives 2.5 hours away who isn't going to Dave's "movie night".  I am certain that almost everyone that has to drive more than an hour will be "no-shows".  So why just season ticket holders ??? what's the point ?  oh right - none needed.

but on its own I don't think this is anything to get outraged about.

But it would be hilarious if DB wanted to charge for seat cushions.

and it's not because I find the basic idea of a free movie at The Big House offensive.  It just won't work for me, being a 2 1/4 hour drive each way to Michigan Stadium with an early work day for me on Monday.

At first glance, it sounds like a fun time.  I do think it would be a much better thing if it were opened up to the public, though, maybe charging a nominal fee for non-season-ticket holders.

Your comment about seat cushions, Don, gives me an opportunity to ask this:  how much will they be charging that evening for all the basics you always buy at regular movie theaters: popcorn, soft drinks, candy, snacks, etc.?   I would assume those items will be available, so will they be looking to rake in the $$$ by charging game-day prices for those goodies, or will the Athletic Dept. offer them at cost, maybe even sending out coupons for a free small popcorn and free small soft drink as a "Thank You!" to the season ticket holders?   Though I won't be going, I think we'll soon know even more about what the motivation is for this event, by seeing how costly those drinks and snacks for the family will be.

and before the movie starts, select random ticket holders out of the public audience and give them the chance to make a 30-yard field goal, with those who kick one through winning a pair of season tickets. Then put the video of the attempts on MGoBlue with "Yakety Sax" playing in the background.

And have the athletic department donate the proceeds of all ticket and concession sales to Mott Children's Hospital or the University's general scholarship fund.

will come from having those Premium Games at home. They'll get some extra money through individual ticket sales and dynamic pricing. They shouldn't raise the season ticket price of $65 per game just because Ohio and MSU are at home in the same year. It's not like we're going to pay less the following year. Any price increase from here on out should be through the PSD. At least that's tax deductible.

Sorry to say this, WD, but you just inflicted a serious hit on your own credibility with that comment.  There is absolutely nothing that can justify a raise in ticket prices in 2015 OR 2016.  I have no doubt in my mind that the tipping point has been reached, maybe even breached.

Not a season ticket package.

I'm talking from my point, as someone who buys single games (for now). I can definitely seem them raising the prices for the "premium games" in 2015 aka state and ohio.

I'd understand their reasoning behind doing it. Doesn't mean I'd agree with it or like it.

The current price for the "biggest game on the schedule" is $100/$200. I can see that bumping up for next year. Rivalry games have always been expensive.

when is enough enough?!

Did you read what Seth posted earlier today in this thread about ticket prices?  The truth is, as Seth implied, more and more Michigan fans are choosing to altogether cut out the expense of attending games at Michigan Stadium when the alternative is sacrificing 10% or more of their annual family post-tax income to somehow afford 2-to-4 seasons tickets.  The AD's pricing policies are choking the life out of the future.  Not all of the fanbase are doctors or lawyers or born with the silver spoon or in some other way wealthy enough to continue reaching deeper and deeper into their wallets to feed their Michigan Football addiction.

Do you have any concept of how, by pricing out the middle class today, future generations of potential Michigan fans and season-ticket holders are being pushed away, all because of the short-sightedness of the present policy of chasing every possible dollar now?   We're already seeing how a pissed-on and pissed-off student population is reacting to being simultaneously dumped on and priced out.  Many of them have already been eliminated as potential season ticket holders and donors to the Athletic Department.  And more and more, current and recent ticket-holders have made the decision to cut back, meaning less chances to cultivate a devoted following among the youngsters that otherwise might catch Michigan Football Fever.

Are you still serious (even though you've backed away some from your original statement) in your belief that any kind of price increase is in any way justifiable over the next few seasons?

You know what, I change my suggestion from Debbie Does Dallas to Backdoor Girls Part 19. I feel like I am taking it up the rear door whenever Brandon announces ticket prices.
