Michigan Passing Attack in '10

Submitted by Nick Sparks on
Let me first off apologize for the mild homerism /glowing optimism of this post. I just watched the 5 questions with Martavious Odoms on mgoblue.com and a few different comments he made got me a little excited about our passing game in 2010 and I'd love to see if I'm completely crazy for thinking it. Tae mentioned that the influx of young slot receivers (Gallon) has provided more in the way of fresh legs on more plays and that with the 2 SR sets we're running it puts a lot more speed on the field. He also mentioned that with a year in the system, Tate (along with the redshirt froshs) should really know the system by now. When it isn't falling off, Tate's got one of the more accurate arms out there. With RR having a fairly complex offense that requires a high amount of precision to execute on all levels; if all of these factors gel and stay injury free, we could be in for a fairly badass passing attack in '10. Of course there's probably 1,000 reason't why this wouldn't happen, but would I be completely crazy to think it might?

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the passing game is very successful this year (barring injury of course). Tate was getting some serious Heisman love pre-injury last year.

be devastating - it was at times last year. However our OL must protect Tate from too many Malachi Crunch situations (back to that injury worry thing)

I love the idea of constantly running fresh legs/lungs onto the field and having a designated go route every time. They have to keep respecting it, or get burnt. By quarters three and four, their corners and safeties are puking and/or we've gone over their heads for a few bombs. Our dudes in the booth can communicate down to the field which of their dudes is beginning to flag or cheat. A rousing rendition of the fight song immediately ensues. This can also keep their d-backs off of the run game and the bubble screen, improving the efficacy of each. Spread wins!

If you are an overly optimistic homer, then I must be one, as well, because I find myself also thinking that we are going to have a nasty passing offense that puts up a ton of points. Tate is pretty much the perfect quarterback to run this offense - he has a deadly accurate arm, and can create with his legs, but not so much that he will rely on them as his primary weapon (once he matures a bit and gets better protection). Pairing a hopefully improved Tate with a more experienced line and a slew of talented receivers should make for an impressive (and exciting, finally) passing game. My one concern is how this will be impacted by our lack of a premier back. If our rushing attach is weak, it will allow teams to cheat off of the line and drop back for better pass protection. While we can remedy this with a solid short passing game, the lack of a strong running game would make us one-dimensional and easier to stop. I know that we have a bunch of talented young backs, but I am not sure that any of them will be able to produce Minor-like Rage.

If Mike Cox is ready to step up, Minor-like Rage could be in store. I think Mike Shaw and Fitzgerald Toussaint will provide the speed (allowing Vincent Smith time to recover from the knee injury). But then, I am also susceptible to overly optimistic homerism, from time to time.

In my uneducated football epinion, a great passing game takes 3 things: time, accuracy, and speed. Our o-line should be improved, allowing more time. Our QB was accurate last year when healthy, and another year in the system should help decision making. Our slot receivers are very fast, so they should be able to get open. Pile on top of that the fact that we'll have some relatively veteran RB's that will hopefully be completely healthy, all of which have slightly different talents (bruisers, speedsters, shifty guys, etc.) and I expect to be surprised at how potent this offense can be.

after the past two seasons I've trained myself to expect the worst. When I look at the situation objectively, rather than emotionally, I see great things this year. It's an oxymoron, but it's how I feel.

There is no doubt that our short/slot/dink-n-dunk passing game will be legit. But we seemed to have a very hard time stretching the field last year with our vertical game. Odoms did it once against IU and Hemingway had a beautiful catch (my favorite play of '09) against WMU but it disappeared quickly. I think and hope this was due to Tate's shoulder. If he comes back healthy I hope this will translate to big down-the-field pass plays.

Tom Brady/Payton Manning mentality; if he gets to be a leader out there everyone looks to and he knows his defenses and can adjust to them, this offense is going to rock. Then comes his junior year...

will help the passing game greatly. Hopefully, he can stretch the field more in 2010, and it will open up the running game and short passing game more than last year. With another year under their belts, the whole WR crew should show improvements and I'm hoping for a breakout year for a few of the WRs. Roundtree seems like he will have a great year, but I'm also hoping a big year will come from Stonum or another one of the outside receivers.

I think Stonum is due for a breakout season. I think he is a Braylon caliber talent, but he hasn't figured that out yet. Hopefully Stonum finds his swagger this season, and Tate has the patience and the protection to look beyond the slots to Stonum, Hemingway, and Co to stretch the field.

i think Stonum's lack of production has as much to do with a freshmen QB and bad pass blocking as anything else. he's certainly made some mistakes (MSU fumble) but you've also seen the great potential as well. i think he has all the talent to be a top notch WR. hopefully the coaches get him the ball a lot this season.

I would love to see some quick passing to take advantage of Tate's accurate arm and our slippery slot receivers while minimizing the weaknesses of our o-line. I think someone in the press report said we will also be focusing on throwing to the backs more often.

We should have a good Oline. We have a good QB and a lot of good WRs. We need Stonum and Hemingway to step up-we need someone who can catch a long ball. We need Roundtree to continue playing how he did the last few games of the season. We should be pretty good. Tate needs to get more comfortable staying in the pocket, though. At times last year he would panick if he couldn't scramble and then he'd get sacked. He is more dangerous on the run, but he needs to get better when he can't move around too much.

I think if Forcier can stay away from being killed everytime a defensive end gets past perry dorrestein, we should be able to sustain our deep threat passing game. Vincent Smith is a good pass catching runningback and having him back for fall camp should be a bonus to the team. Note: Tate has raised his weight by a good amount so it looks like hes less likely to die next time he takes a snap I hope shoelace worked on his passing game during the offseason, but it doesn't seem like it based on the practace vids. Does anyone know if Devin Gardiner will make a significant threat to the starting spot? I want him to play big because he's our most athletic QB. (Anyone know his 40'?)

I'm very excited about the slot recievers this year. In terms of guys on the outside I hope Darryl Stonum finally lives up to the hype and Junior Hemingway can stay healthy.
