Michigan minnesota snowflakes
This was Howard's worst game as Michigan's coach. Let Minnesota back in the game with the weird lineup at the end of the 1st half. Brooks playing most of the game over DDJ and not doubling Oturu when Minny doesnt have many shooters.
January 12th, 2020 at 2:55 PM ^
Memo to players recruited by Bielien: make point blank layups and you win the game.
January 12th, 2020 at 2:55 PM ^
Just such a winnable game. There aren’t that many games on the road in conference that are right there for the taking. We flat out blew that game.
I also need to note, I don’t recall a recent college game where a team went an entire game without a dunk. That kind of says it all.
January 12th, 2020 at 2:56 PM ^
let them back in with davis fumbling two perfect passes under the net at the end of the first half, brooks playing at all, going 1-7 from the 3 pt, 4-12 from the field, as per usual (as you mention), and teske shooting woes even when he was under the hoop himself.
and getting whistled 19 times vs 7 for them, you have to expect that and play through it.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:10 PM ^
One has to wonder what the standards are for evaluating referee performance.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:17 PM ^
I don't know. How they missed that beautiful body check on brooks at the end of the first half is a mystery. That almost would've been a targeting foul in a football game....
January 12th, 2020 at 3:19 PM ^
I would bet good money it would have been called if the jerseys were reversed.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:19 PM ^
Fuck you.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:21 PM ^
Are you new...?
January 12th, 2020 at 3:32 PM ^
Nah, Maizen has been around a long time.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:38 PM ^
But how did such an innocuous post draw such an unnecessary and undeserved reply?
January 12th, 2020 at 4:54 PM ^
just like me he saw " ohio state" and it was just a reflex ( no caps on purpose )
January 12th, 2020 at 3:24 PM ^
brooks playing at all,
Brooks is a good defender. There's a dropoff when he comes out of the game. It'd just be nice if he could find his stroke again.
January 12th, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
If there was a way for Brooks to transform himself into someone else when he goes up for a shot, he'd be a helluva player. He does everything else really well.
I wouldn't give up on him, but I think he should be the reliever, not the starter,.
January 12th, 2020 at 2:57 PM ^
Brooks is firmly back down to Earth. I’d like to see DDJ start over him.
January 12th, 2020 at 2:59 PM ^
I’m a huge DDJ guy, but he was pretty bad in the second half, bad defense, and really the turnover that put the game out of reach.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:06 PM ^
For all of Eli’s issues...he is still WAY better on the defensive end. Carr went to work on DDJ late in the 2nd half.
January 12th, 2020 at 2:58 PM ^
Ummm not really. Minnesota’s 17 to 7 foul advantage and 24 to 6 free throw advantage was the difference in this game. This is the reason why home teams in the BIG win 90 percent of their games. When Michigan is on the road the games are unwatchable because of the shit ass BIG refs!
January 12th, 2020 at 2:59 PM ^
at least we didn't lose by 29, like sparty.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:05 PM ^
True! I take solace in that!
January 12th, 2020 at 3:08 PM ^
Who cares what State did today? Michigan is now below .500 in-conference again. That’s all that matters. Had an opportunity for a rare road win i the B1G and the coaches blissed it away. And now they play Garza on the road. Geez, I wonder how that’s gonna go?
January 12th, 2020 at 3:07 PM ^
Seriously ?? WTF, we're the RCMB now.
January 12th, 2020 at 5:08 PM ^
Relax red, that was only an attempt at humor.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:07 PM ^
Minnesota got most of those calls driving hard to the basket...we rarely did that this game!
January 12th, 2020 at 3:13 PM ^
But even when we did there was never a whistle in our favor.
The officiating in general is one reason I never got into basketball as much as football. The game is currently designed for there to be 20+ fouls in a game - far too much influence by refs and too much game stoppage.
January 12th, 2020 at 2:58 PM ^
Exactly OP, need Livers back and way better substitution patterns, gotta play guys who are playing well and not cold shooting scrubs.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:51 PM ^
Livers ain’t coming back any time soon
January 12th, 2020 at 2:58 PM ^
Seems ironic that our post play seems to be our biggest weakness.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:32 PM ^
Is this going to be the same irony that Harbaugh has with QBs?
January 12th, 2020 at 2:58 PM ^
Keys to the game:
AAAH PUT THE BALL IN THE BASKET.
January 12th, 2020 at 2:59 PM ^
1. Beilein left Howard a bunch of system guys and we are seeing that play out.
2. Michigan’s bigs are too unathletic.
3. Brooks doesn’t bring anything on offense to warrant his PT.
4. I would like to see Michigan go zone against teams who can’t shoot.
January 12th, 2020 at 2:59 PM ^
brooks is just a completely deficient player - he has no business taking minutes from ddj. between that, the fact that teske is slow and can’t guard anyone anymore, and a total ref job and you get a 10 point loss to a shit minnesota team
January 12th, 2020 at 6:10 PM ^
Brooks is a better defender than DDJ
January 12th, 2020 at 3:00 PM ^
Teske has been soft and bullied the last two games. Time for Juwan to be tough on our players. DDJ needs more minutes. Iowa on Friday... Yikes.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:00 PM ^
Brutal game.
Brutal conference.
Howard needs to figure out the rotation and be willing to double on D.
All Pitino's are sleazy.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:01 PM ^
DDJ should get Brooks’s minutes. Manuel needs to start complaining about bad officiating. And Howard needs to stop letting one man beat them.
Had an 11-point lead late in the first half and then lost the next 25 minutes by 19. Had a 1-point lead late in the game and then let Minnesota go on a huge run to win easily thanks to extremely sloppy play.
Winning on the road is going to be nearly impossible in the B1G this year. Pissing away a game they should have won is going to hurt later. This game was right there for the taking and Howard turned it away.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:01 PM ^
This team is bad. Davis and Nunez are not big 10 caliber players. Substitution patterns are awful. Defensive scheme is awful. Offensively, players are sloppy and careless with the ball. NIT bound
January 12th, 2020 at 3:02 PM ^
I think Davis is OK for spot duty. Nunez OTOH really shouldn't be out there.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:17 PM ^
this team is not bad, we’re missing our best 3pt shooter and a solid defender. Nunez and Davis are not B1G players, totally agree. Substitution patterns are way off kilter because of no Livers. Beilein left no bigs in this roster after Teske. D scheme isn’t horrible, but it’s certainly not good.
One thing that concerns me is the poor timeout management, I felt the same way vs MSU, not that it would have mattered. We were up 1, they got a layup, a turnover, a layup, a turnover, a foul, hit 2 free throws... no timeout down 5. Piss poor offensive set then a 3... 73-65... ball game. Timeout was needed after the 2 FTs IMO, you’ve got 2 left with 2 minutes, you’re down 5 on the road with no momentum, what are you waiting for?
January 12th, 2020 at 5:01 PM ^
No offense but Howard didn’t miss all of those open 3’s and layups.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:01 PM ^
Wake me up when we win a single fucking road game
January 12th, 2020 at 3:01 PM ^
We certainly had our chances, but a 27-6 FT disparity in such a close game is crazy. Life on the road.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:03 PM ^
We certainly had our chances, but letting their best player shoot over 70% without ever attempting to double team off their terrible shooters in such a close game is crazy. Life with a first time coach
January 12th, 2020 at 3:05 PM ^
It can be both of them. I'm not defending the no-double team strategy. But a 27-6 disparity is bullshit. They did not call this game evenly at both ends.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:53 PM ^
i rarely think refs influence games enough to mention, but this game was a shit show. body checks uncalled for minnesota, ticky-tack shit called against us. sometimes literally in consecutive plays. absolute trash game from the refs. it was both, in my opinion.
doesn't mean we shouldn't have been able to win and play better D. i have no idea why teske is so bad one on one this year, but he can't stop anybody. i agree with most that double-teaming the post is important to look at, but i wonder if juwan is reluctant to do that with his most versatile, switchable, and mobile defender in street clothes. seems like he should still have confidence in guys like X and DDJ to at least shade the box consistently. it's not like the gophers had a ton of snipers.
time to adapt now.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:02 PM ^
Season is going to be a grind with plenty of ups and downs. The Big 10 is good.
Tread water until the tournament and hopefully win a game or two there then collect this killer recruiting class.
This is just an ok team.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:06 PM ^
The issue is, this season could get away from Howard. That would be bad for recruiting. We are staring down 2-4 in the conference.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:45 PM ^
The coaching challenge for him will be to hopefully keep these guys focused and fighting hard each game. I predict they will have few easy wins the rest of the season.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:03 PM ^
Nunez needs his transfer papers ASAP. Castleton right behind him.
Those two are unplayable in Big Ten play. I understand that Howard is trying to give players rest in the first half but you gotta go to DDJ sooner especially if Brooks is sucking.
Teske is making Howard look stupid by playing soft as shit down low. Howard has to stop giving him the benefit of the doubt and should start double teaming stat.
Lastly, the roster is what it is. Beilein didn’t recruit any shooters or athletes and left. It won’t be fixed until next year with Howard’s guys.
January 12th, 2020 at 3:06 PM ^
John Beilein isn't the reason every big has their career high against us. We had the exact same collection of big men last year and were actually a competent defense. This defense is a disaster paired with some of the worst shooting a Michigan team has had since Amaker
