Michigan in-home visits with '15 5* Dozier, '16 5* Battle, '16 5* Leaf

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Since we're a basketball school, it's probably worth noting amidst the football distractions that Michigan coaches have scheduled an in-home visit with 2016 5* PF T.J. Leaf this week and in-home visits with 2015 5* G Perry Dozier and 2016 5* G Tyus Battle next week. Michigan is in Leaf's final 10, in Dozier's final 5, and will likely be a finalist for Battle.

Leaf is scheduled to decide in February and, as of now, he has one official visit scheduled - Michigan in February (IIRC).

All three are top-20 players.

Michigan coaches have been all over these guys, plus Derryck Thornton, for a long time now. They've been the clear priority for a while and a lot of time and energy has been put into their recruitment. The 2016 class could be monstrous (3 top 20 guys) if that pays off.

I get the feeling that adding a guy like Duncan Robinson is part of the larger plan for our team. We have role players with an elite skill, now he can tell these guys that we need a few cornerstone guys. Players who can command the ball and be the primary guys. They'll have Duncan on the wing to snipe and spread the floor, and Doyle and Teske to grab boards and command the paint on defense. I think trying to build the best team possible, not just the best collection of players. The pieces have to fit. Now it's time to strike on 2-3 alpha dogs to compliment our recent commits.

And the Big Ten doesn't have one team on Florida State's level to prop it up. Seeing as how the Big Ten = ACC without Florida State, that means the Big Ten < ACC when it comes to football right now.

Althought I would argue the Big Ten is the better basketball league, so we got that going for us. Maryland did move to the Big Ten to get a more competitive environment for their best sport (basketball) after all.

For those who haven't seen this, the Jalen Brunson recruiting saga appears to be near its conclusion, with a Wednesday annoucement, following just two official visits: Illinois and Villanova. MSU was supposed to get an official visit from him later this month, but they're out of it.

These guys would be awesome gets, but no matter what happens, Beilein has proven to us that whoever he gets, he'll mold into damn good basketball players.

I can't wait for basketball season.

I think we have a great chance at landing P.J. Dozier. He wants to play with the ball in his hands, he's perfect for Beilein's system, and he can step right in and replace Caris immediately. Plus, North Carolina (the perceived favorite) wants him on the wing instead of at guard.

Thanks for sharing. Great to have some great news.

Must confess . . . I literally have not gone to a single board thread the last 2 1/2 days. Until this one. I don't have the energy or the desire to go through all the AA Torch and Pitchfork posts. Thanks for a bit of good news.

I want all those guys at Michigan - plus Thornton.  Then we have all the pieces for a future monster Final Four team.  I think Beilein has the right philosophy in filling his roster with a combination of under-the-radar and role players plus cornerstone (an another poster calls them) guys with known physical and ball skills now.  All the guys mentioned in the OP are cornerstone players.

Michigan will also be among several schools visiting Amir Coffey this week, per Marcus R. Fuller. Coffey is a 6-7 combo guard out of Hopkins, Minnesota, class of 2016. He's the son of Richard Coffey, who played at Minnesota, but he's not a lock to pick the Gophers. His older sister, Nia Coffey, is a sophomore at Northwestern who made first-team All-Big Ten as a freshman.
