Michigan Embarrassing Ticket Giveaway

Submitted by 814 East U on

This HAS to be rock bottom...at least I hope. Received this picture from a relative who is a student.

Sorry to all those MGoUsers who claimed 100% fake...because I just picked up 2 100% real tickets to Minny.

More proof...

Brandon's job security isn't going to come down to whether our announced attendance is 102K or 104K.   What is far more important is how the season-ticketholders and big-money donors (the people responsible for our athletic department's surplus)  feel about him.

If you want to go to the game, take advantage of this deal.

I'm currently a student in the College of Engineering and since it's career fair I went to the UGo's on north campus to get myself a throwback Mountain Dew. Saw the sign there and thought there was a catch so I asked the cashier and it's totally real. I saw the tickets. Still didn't buy the 2 Cokes.

I do apologize if you're offended, though I never really thought you were deliberately lying and I don't think I accused you of that. I thought you had been duped.

It does appear to  be true. It's just with the piles of crap being thrown on this program, coach, team, AD, and seemingly any and all things even smelling like Michigan football, I was suspicious.

It should be made clear this a sponsor who has been granted tickets and is doing as they please with them. The OP gives the impression, at least to me, that the university is participating in a giveaway simply to fill the stadium. That's not exactly the case.

Maize and Blue…

Read about it and walked to the Union to buy a couple Cokes on a beautiful night in Ann Arbor. Apparently Pepsi did a promotion last week and Coke was trying to one up them according to the clerk and I got the last pair.  Tickets are in  section 15 near the top of the stadium but for buying two cokes what the heck.

So it sounds like this was a promotion put on by Coke—not the athletic dept.—involving a very limited number of tickets, as was suggested by this tweet:

It reminds me a little of this story about Eastern Michigan from a couple of years ago:

NCAA rules stipulate a school must average 15,000 fans per home football game to remain in Division I. Eastern Michigan, which averaged 6,401 fans per home game in 2010, uses $150,000 from a distribution contract with Pepsi to purchase tickets from itself at a rate of $3 apiece to remain NCAA compliant.

Michigan isn't quite in the same boat, but I wonder if Brandon offered Coke a bunch of tickets at an insanely low price, and Coke is now giving them away in this promotion.  That way, they can still claim they sold over 100,000 tickets, and that they're not directly responsible for this giveaway.

it would seem wise to put at least some sort of restrictions on how your sponsors can use them.

E.g., Coke cannot sell them at (effectively) $1.50 apiece two days after a bad loss and at a time when season ticket holders are already kind of upset about not getting "value for their purchase."

This isn't Brandon's fault, but Good God, even more negative PR?!?  I guess when it rains it pours.

The tickets are available because the team is losing.  Is that Brandon's fault?  Yes, he's ultimately responsible for hiring Hoke.  Have you been complaining about this for four years?  No?  OK, then enjoy your anger and fury to the skies at Michigan's losing.

The giveaway sucks, but they want people in the stadium.  Or would you maximize your drama by seeing the largest possible allotment of empty seats on Saturday?  See, at this point you win either way.  Cheer up.

We just have different ideas of loyalty. You seem to want all fans to act like everything will be okay just have patience and support the team and the AD no matter what.

My view is demand better. It is my opinion that Michigan will be better in the long run with a change. My loyalty is to Michigan, not the guy coaching Michigan or running Michigan's athletic department.

John Beilein's record midway into his fourth season was 11-9 including seven losses in eight games to Purdue, Wisconsin, Kansas, Ohio State, Indiana, Northwestern, and Minnesota.

This is after three years where his teams went 46-53.

2007-08   10-22

2008-09   21-14

2009-10   15-17

Fire him too?

where the team went on fire in the Big Ten season, finished tied for 3rd (?) I believe, and swept MSU (including the Zack Novak aneurism of leadership game). Funny thing is, as absurd as it sounds in retrospect, Beilein was on the hotseat at the time. Who knows what might have happened had they lost to MSU that year? We'll never know for sure, but the fact is that Beilein somehow found a way to rally the team that year and finish the season blazing hot. And of course made the tourney. Soo yeah, if anything similar in were to happen in football this year, Hoke would remove himself from the hotseat. Only time will tell...

Again, I offer you to cheer up: what you say about me is not true. I am an optimist, no doubt. But I feel like Michigan is being out coached in every meaningful game we play, when the opposite should be true.

I just don't understand the masturbation that occurs as a ship is taking on water. Wallowing has never had any interest to me, in any walk of life. Certainly not with Michigan football. But I understand these are trying times, and people get by how they can. If drama offsets the pain, I hope it has value. Things are certainly very likely to get worse.

I can understand that. What bugs me the most is the maize and blue goggles. Someone at my tailgait stated Blake Countess was better than Darqueze Denard. Little things like that make me wish Michigan fans were more in touch with reality.

Not saying you are out of touch, but sometimes just acknowledging the truth is hard for a lot of this fan base (MSU is a better program currently, we are a joke to the rest of the country)
