Michigan BBQ and Recruiting thoughts
I thought I might create a thread where we might consolidate our thoughts/opinions/mindless rants about the big weekend coming up in Ann Arbor. This could potentially be a huge recruiting weekend for Michigan.
A couple talking points:
1. Tremendous recently posted on Facebook that he spoke to Leon McQuay III, who stated this morning that "My coach and dad told me that Michigan said if I didn't commit by this weekend, they wouldn't have a scholarship for me".
2. A friend of mine who is in tune with Clemson recruiting told me this morning that Clemson has "basically given up" on RB Derrick Green. Coupling that with Ohio recently ending their recruitment of Green, and the fact that he is spending three days in Ann Arbor with his family along for the ride - maybe there is something going on behind the scenes.
Or maybe not.
But it's worth watching.
I think the LM3 'commit this weekend or don't at all' move isn't necessarily trying to force him to commit to us. I think it's more of a 'we're pretty set on cb so if you don't want to commit to us now then we're going to focus on other things' move, which would make sense after the douglass commitment. Although a lot of fans of other schools will probably say "Hah! Told you guys Brady Hoke pressures recruits!" Either that or there are some silent commits out there and the coaches know something we don't, which we probably would have heard about by now.
"Either that or there are some silent commits out there and the coaches know something we don't, which we probably would have heard about by now"
If we had heard about them by now, then those commits that the coaches know about and we don't wouldn't exist...could you explain your meaning please?
I didn't mean we would know who it was, but we would know that someone has committed. There have been instances in the past where a guy like Sam Webb will say that a recruit has silently committed, but he won't give us a name. Then Twitter blows up and Mgoblog explodes with speculation. The end.
ahhhh, gotcha. Thank you. that makes a lot of sense now that you clarified. thanks again
Sam Webb does a nice job of explaining Leon's situation in the Detroit News yesterday (link below). However, the most interesting and insightful aspect of the article is Mr. McQuay's thoughts in the Comments Section. IMO, I like how the McQuay family is handling this. Leon would certainly be a nice addition to our class, but I like his selection process regardless of choice.
Mr. McQuay does seem to be on top of things, but he should really stop reading the comments section. All kinds of idiots post absolute nonsense and it isn't worth his time even commenting.
I really like Leon and was hoping he lands in Ann Arbor, but either way I hope the kid has a nice career.
Haha, yeah.
I thought that sounded very RDT-ish as well. But the dude is a Clemson alum and, in our recent conversations, seems to follow recruiting very closely from a Clemson standpoint. He might be full of crap, but seems like knowledge that would not be hard to come by if you followed their recruiting closely.
Coach Hoke wins recruiting battles AND BBQ eating contests over Urbz.
And he values keeping his word even more. Integrity is one of the best things about the program right now.
Honestly? I would rather have Sypniewski. We have a very strong class for our secondary already, and Sypniewski is a stud long snapper. This is a position that we can't overlook since he will (hopefully) have 4 full years with 10ish snaps per game. Any single one of those screwed up can ruin a game, and ruin a season. Also, going back on our commitment to him sends a terrible message. We'd be getting into Alabama shuffle territory there
I don't get why everyone insists on making this argument. Did I miss some sort of terrible long snapping epidemic over the past fourty years that suddenly warrants the need to scout and offer kids to long snap? Have walk ons suddenly become insufficient? What is a stud long snapper, anyways? There's no gurantee that he will react to the college atmosphere and perform up to par with his "ranking" anyways. Want an example? Look at our punter. The only difference now is that instead of saying "so long" to a walk on who can't do the job we'll have another scholarship tied up for years.
I'm getting tired of that argument as well, however, I'm pretty sure the starting LS has always been on scholarship.
And rightfully so. The difference is that in the previous scenario you had a chance to prove the player out before dedicating that scholarship to him (if he didn't already serve another pupose on the team that got him a scholarship coming in).
Probably a smart move to change your name
Ok, so this is strange. I could have sworn I saw this post was originally authored by WolverineInABag. Then, after I refreshed it, the author changed.
BISB, was there a name change?
edit: also, the statement about "people's word mean[ing] something" could be incredibly ironic in this case.
You post from multiple accounts. One pretending to be an Alabama fan. You got caught. Own it. This excuse of accidentally posting from his account is complete bullshit. The fact that you interviewed yourself is even dumber. Way to go deleting your twitter after you got caught.
since WIAB got caught as RDT? Who is this now that you're responding to?
Look at the name of the OP of the original thread now:

You are teetering on insanity. Please stop talking about/to yourself in the third person.
Why did you change your name? If you didn't do anything misleading and you don't think it should be a big deal then why try to hide behind a new name? Also, if you want to try to change your identity then you might want to change your quote from your the one you had as WIAB.
On the mobile app it still says WIAB is the author of the post
Can't remember where I read this but I thought a lot of recruits liked Hoke & Co. (though not necessarily Michigan) because they always know exactly where they are with the staff and how they envision them. If Green, Treadwell and McQuay are at all in contact with the coaches then I'm sure they know exactly how many scholarships we have and if a spot will or won't be held for them
Should we start the over/under of commitments this weekend at 3?
I'm hoping for 3+, expecting at least one, but thinking most likely 2. So I'll take the under...but I'd love to be wrong.
By the same token, if I get my offer I may commit also.
I'm gonna say we have three exactly. Green, Webb, and another from 2014. Treadwell is probably going to keep dragging us along, and I don't see Mcquay coming to Michigan
No - 3 is way too high. The number is 1.5 or 2, imo.
2013 - Derrick Green is the only one that could drop.
2014 - I would say based on information at Rivals that Ferns and Webb are the only ones that could drop.
That is 3 kids with potential. I guess you could say that "Laquon + Shane at Gridiron Kings = potential LT commitment" but that is REALLY stretching it.
I thought after his LSU offer things were going to slow down a bit for Webb?
They only talk about Ferns and Webb, but do mention that they would be surprised re: Webb. Get a subscription if you want the full details! I highly recommend using a pay site and MGoBlog, the thought that "everything ends up here anyway" is only a half truth. You might get a decent summary a few days late - but there is a ton of value in paying for Rivals (or Scout, I assume).
Nice try, Mike Farrell.
I thought that Montae Nicholson may drop this weekend at the BBQ?
TomVH seems to think it's still far too early.
Simple. If you want someone to commit, they can't believe that the spot will be open forever. Fortunately you get most of what you want with this strategy. Unfortunately you will always lose out on one. I am happy getting 95% of what we want. Now if we were Alabama, we would be doing the Alabama Shuffle and telling all the 3 star players how tough playing time is going to be for them.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Dawson say a few weeks ago that someone was going to commit around this time (BBQ weekend)? There's no way he could have predicted Douglas' committment. But maybe it's a 2014 prospect.
My guess would be a 2014 guy, but Dawson and Green are very close friends so that is a possibility.
