Michigan #17 in this week's AP poll
Others: MSU #2, Purdue #9, OSU #16. Go Blue
Edit: UM #16 in Coaches poll, MSU first, Purdue #9, OSU #15. No matter how you slice it, we are on cusp of 4/5 seed.

Yeah, I sense your sarcasm.... What the hell, man??? They got beat handily, and if they're going to make the two teams one ranking away from each other, they have them right ABOVE us??? REALLY???
I don't get it sometimes. I feel like i'm taking crazy pills.
February 19th, 2018 at 12:23 PM ^
I think it would be hard for anyone to put them directly above us in an individual poll, but the AP is the average of a bunch of media. So some probably had us right above OSU, others might have had them 2-3 spots above us.
February 19th, 2018 at 12:23 PM ^
We have the same record as OSU (22-7) and split the season series. Moreover, they were 14 spots ahead of us last week and inertia's a powerful thing.

The teams are 1-1 against each other, both beat msu but osu beat purdue at purdue and we went 0-2. Their losses to psu look better than losses to nebraska and northwestern. Makes sense they are ranked higher, you could argue either way but its not egregious

Clemson would've been a toss-up. I'm not sure on Gonzaga.

Nebraska (NR).

This isn't football. A lot of decent teams aren't ranked. There are 351 teams in Division I altogether.
Nebraska on the road is a Quadrant 1 game, so it's not an issue on our résumé. A win there would have been good - that's all.
February 19th, 2018 at 1:49 PM ^
And... by rights, we ought to be seeded above Nebraska in the B1G Tourney.
I see that some folks seemed to think that I was downgrading our guys, by virtue of that ugly loss to Nebraska. No; the opposite. We're a better team right now, with a better resume/record, than Nebraska. I was only thinking about B1G Tourney seeding. Goddamn Conference schedule. Hopefully, the cream rises in the last two games of the regular season. Even on the road, versus Nebraska's two home games.
February 19th, 2018 at 1:59 PM ^
...as either the B1G Tourney 4-seed, OR the 5-seed; Michigan and Nebraska face each other in the 4-seed's first game. So there is that late-season grudge thing.
But; has a five-seed ever won the B1G Tourney? I don't know. I don't think so. We won it, as a #4, right?
February 19th, 2018 at 2:07 PM ^
huh? last year? we were the 8 seed.
February 19th, 2018 at 2:18 PM ^
My bad. Forgot how far that climb was.
February 19th, 2018 at 2:07 PM ^
(A) This is how all conference tourneys work and it's very common for national rankings to not match conference rankings.
(B) We still have a shot at the 4th seed.
(C) I don't think one extra game is going to make or break anything for us.
(D) If we are the 5th seed, we'll still play them regardless, assuming we win.
(E) They destroyed us.

FYI: You can edit a post if no one else has replied. Anyway, I agree with the general sentiment. For as bad as the B10 supposedly is, we have 5 top 25 teams by kenpom, which is one more than either the ACC or B12. The ACC is very strong at the top though.

Beating a top 10 team allowed us to move up five spots in the rankings. (I don't think it was the Iowa win that did it.)
February 19th, 2018 at 3:09 PM ^
There were also like ten teams ahead of us that also lost. Duke moved up as much as we did and all they did was beat Clemson and Virginia Tech
February 19th, 2018 at 4:04 PM ^
which was discussed above, who ahead of us do you think should be ranked lower than we are?
If you think losing automatically should make you drop a certain amount without any context (who the loss was to, where it was played, who else lost, etc), you would be expecting the poll to work exacty the way it shouldn't.
February 19th, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
We beat a bottom of the top ten team that already lost earlier in the week.
February 19th, 2018 at 12:50 PM ^
10 is still even.

A 4 seed would only be a lock with a win in the Big Ten Semis. Beating PSU, Maryland, and Nebraska might get us a 4 seed, but definitely wouldn't lock it in. A win in the Semis over MSU* would lock it in though.
*assuming they beat the Illini and the Badgers this week

Keep in mind that we are #23 in Kenpom and #28 in the RPI.

February 19th, 2018 at 12:55 PM ^
after we beat them at the Breslin..... But they hardly dropped at all.
I personally think OSU dropped more than they should have for a road loss, as tough as that is for me to say
February 19th, 2018 at 12:58 PM ^
didnt they also lose to penn state this week?
February 19th, 2018 at 1:01 PM ^
I didn't see that. But I still think Sparty should have fallen more after we beat them earlier in season.......
February 19th, 2018 at 2:33 PM ^
Them dropping is less a reflection on Michigan beating them and more on the curb-stomping they took from an unranked PSU team last Thursday night.
It's also two straight double-digit losses.
February 19th, 2018 at 1:05 PM ^
Hehe. Dont be shocked if Sparty finishes #1 in the AP/coaches poll and gets a 3 or 4 seed in the tourney.
Feels like this season the polls and the tourney seeds shall be markedly different.

and they turn the ball over a crapload.
I don't see them going beyond the field of 32. Somebody will get them.
February 19th, 2018 at 4:10 PM ^
They have the highest block rate in the country, they allow the lowest 2pct% in the country and the lowest eFG% in the country.
They just held Northwestern to 11 points on 3 (!!!) made FGs in an entire second half.
They are very good defensively.
They are very good at offensive rebounding too, but yes, they're merely ok at defensive rebounding because they go after a lot of blocks.
Their weakness is that they turn it over way too much.

February 19th, 2018 at 1:23 PM ^
Why? Who do you think should be in front them?
MSU does not have any bad losses. UVa does, Villanova does, Duke does, Xavier just got hamblasted by Villanova on Saturday, and while Texas Tech doesn't have any devastating losses, they did lose to Texas, who is only 16-11 at the time. MSU's worst loss is probably us. The #17 team in the country. The other teams they've lost to are OSU and Duke. One is #5 in America and the other was #8 as of yesterday.
They're absolutely beatable, but so is everyone in the field this year. There are no truly dominant teams. They're among the best of a beatable bunch.
February 19th, 2018 at 1:48 PM ^
The bigger issue with MSU is their serious shortage of quality wins. They've beaten Purdue at home and...
