i was thinking of possible choices and realized that chris spielman is not a coach, yet he was interested in the osu job back when tressel got it. spielman will eventually be a coach and would do a great job as our lb coach but he would never want to coach for michigan because of the whole osu thing

In a world where Spielman coached and was up for a position coaching, um, position, I could totally see him going to UM. Coaches go to rival schools all the time. First there's Bo, Darrell Royal played and coached at OU before he went to Texas, Kyle Wittingham went to BYU before ending up as Utah's HC, Bielema played at Iowa and still has a Hawkeye tattoo on his leg. If Spielman were to coach, I think he would have no problem going to Michigan. He's beloved in Detroit from his Lions days anyway.

Not a good flick. But it was an experience seeing it in Ann Arbor, probably the only town in America where when The Program's Program loses to Michigan, the crowd at the theater erupts in cheers. And I'm sure Bo ranks that as one of his top five most proud moments. :-) Probably right behind beating OSU in '69, but ahead of his first Rose Bowl victory. Best part of that movie. (Because, you know, Halle Berry had too many clothes on).

"probably the only town in America where when The Program's Program loses to Michigan, the crowd at the theater erupts in cheers." That's absolutely hilarious. I went with my roommate to see Big Fish in the theater when I was a junior at UM. As you people who have seen it know, there is a scene in which Ewan McGregor is given a key to the town and a marching band plays The Victors in celebration. My roommate did the clap/fist in the air thing, but unfortunately no one else did. But I agree, The Program is a pretty awful movie, and Halle Berry is too clothed. One way they could have saved the movie was to have her strip naked and have sex doggy-style with Omar Epps/Mike Tomlin on a couch. Hell, just replace all her scenes with him with the sex scene from Monster's Ball. Maybe throw in some actual penetration. It worked for Caligula! (It didn't.) Take a hint from these guys:

.....there's a recent story from MLive that Cubit is considering firing Morrison (Google "Western Michigan Defensive Coordinator" and you should see it). So he might be looking for a job soon.

Most people have been mentioning Corwin Brown. Some guy on the scout freeboards mentioned a few names I know nothing about as possibilities "Bob Fraser (Rutgers), Tyrone Nix (Ole Miss), Tony Tademy (TCU), Geoff Collins (UCF) or Mark Elder (CMU)" Take that for what it might be worth.

i feel like thats a name we in the interwebs love to throw around, however, i dont see it happening as the move would be a step back (from DC - or at least co-dc- to LB coach...) this of course is just my opinion. im assuming the end result, whoever it is, will not be someone any one of us are very familiar with.

Yes, his name seems to be the first one on many people's minds. But, even if he were willing to step back to be a position coach, how good of a coach is he? How much of Notre Dame's porous defense can be attributed to his coaching ability? He's a great recruiter, but, once the mighty 4 and 5 stars are here, we need to develop them, and that comes from coaching. Anyone else know more of his coaching history and/or track record before Notre Dame?

I say Tony Tademy If he can do with Michigan LB's what he's done with TCU's (I believe 4 first team all confrence 1 all american and a butkus awards finalist) Then the Michigan front seven will very soon be a force to be recond with in the big ten!

While I'd be thrilled with Tyrone Nix, don't sleep on Mark Elder. He's the dark horse in that group, but he was a Michigan Grad Assistant with some of our best linebackers ever, has done well at CMU, and is known for his attention to technique (something we desperately need).

The hire has to be someone who Rodriguez trusts and is comfortable working with. He's completely struck out on his initial outside hires and given his current situation, there's no way he'll risk hiring someone he doesn't know personally. So that's quality number 1. I would say quality number 2 has to be someone who can actually coach, a person with a proven track record of actual success. That takes Corwin Brown out for me. Yes he's a great recruiter and defensive recruiting this year has been a little disappointing, but there are more immediate concerns on defense. They have to improve right away or else 2010 may be it for Rodriguez. Tyrone Nix is a fine candidate, but he's head coaching material. Don't be surprised to see someone who knows Rodriguez personally or who he's coached against. Another face from the Big East is a possibility.

When you said "defensive recruiting this year has been a little disappointing" you were talking about Notre Dame, right? Because if you were talking about Michigan: Cullen Christian Marvin Robinson Adrian Witty Ray Vinopal Carvin Johnson T. Talbott T. Talbott Richard Ash Ken Wilkins Antonio Kinard Jordan Paskorz Conelius Jones (likely) Courtney Avery With Grimes, Murphy, Parker, Beachum, Hankins, Black, Mackall, and a couple of others still in the mix. That is not disappointing. This is a top 12 class now without the final crop of kids.

It's just been my habit. I think those two guys are going to get the "full first and last name treatment" on their jerseys, because the shortest you can go in identifying their first names is: Terry Talbott Terre. Talbott Perhaps a different identification system is in order - DT Talbott and CB Talbott?

Geoff Collins has been at UCF for two years and is also the recruiting coordinator. Before that he was at Alabama as something Nick Saban called the Director of Personnel, which his bio indicates was a recruiting position. So we have an evidently a good defensive coach (former DC at Western Carolina) with a particular expertise in LB's. Also a strong recruiting background in the southeast. Not bad. Mark Elder is younger but he too has been a DC, at Wayne State before going to Michigan as a defensive Grad Assistant. Must know the midwest fairly well from a recruiting basis. I'll vote Collins but I'm sure the guy RR hires will be someone nobody is mentioning.

Sam Sword or Ian Gold come to mind. Not sure if they can coach, but both were very good players. I would gladly take Larry Foote if he were to retire now, but he still has some good years in him. As for Corwin Brown, he was demoted this year and was basically the DB coach with a glorified title of Co-DC. Even if it is a step down, which I don't believe it is, it's much better then being unemployed.

While I buy the argument that Corwin Brown won't be hired because of his questionable ability to actually coach, I don't agree with the notion that he wouldn't come to Michigan to be a LB coach because that would be step down. Brown's time as DC at ND was an unmitigated disaster. Indeed, Tenuta was hired at ND to do precisely what Brown apparently could not do: coordinate the defense. The fact that Brown retained the DC (or co-DC) in his title was simply a professional gesture on the part of Weis and/or Tenuta. In reality, Brown was little more than a glorified LB coach last year. Thus, becoming the new LB coach at Michigan would really be more akin to a lateral than a step down. Brown has experience at a BIG-time program, sick recruiting skills, and a solid Michigan connection. Those are three things Hopson did not have when he came to Ann Arbor. As for coaching ability, there are plenty of posters here who will argue that Hopson didn't have that, either, so Brown couldn't be much worse in that department.
